No they are not. You have got red and white mixed in rows and/or columns. That doesn't make sense. Yes they are... Because this is how I build them! It's the easiest way to keep the wiring as short as possible and prevent the internal wiring from crossing each others path. Anyway, it's the same way you built your first one

Surely the inputs should be at the bottom to have the shortest cables?

Al, you id yours exactly the same way as i am doing this one, but you have put the inputs at the bottom, and the outputs at the top. I tend to find mot people's TT is above the rest of their equipment, like yours is and mine, so IMO it makes sense to put the input at the top of the box, and the output at the bottom. It prevents a lot of crossing interconnects and internal wiring. It makes total sense, just may not be "the norm"

I space em sideways across the panel as that allows for shortest input wiring while keeping the heatsinks near the vents with the paradise pcbs, but stacking them input above output makes total sense for racking.

I think so too. I have seen the setup this BB3 is going in to, and it's suited to my arrangement too. All good

Current build I'm doing with loading plugs on front panel of main boards along with 4 spst toggle switches cos farnell want 15 quid to deliver a 4pst from the states. Guy wants psu switch on front and back of power chassis as well, weird.

Been a bit quiet in the blog lately, but with good reason….
I left it last with the ‘MultiFET’ boards being in working order. Well today i thought i would offer a little bit of user experience with them in the phonostage.
The initial goal of this was to reduce noise and hopefully raise the gain a little. It was fine before...honestly, I was more than happy with the performance, but as with these types of projects, a suggestion was made to try and reduce what noise was there.
Paul @rfc gave the tip btw.
We managed to get a PCB layout done with the help of Russel at PFM after a much appreciated tip off from our very own SQ....Much thanks to them both.
As you can see, this is a real collaborative project, with a number of people helping make this what it is today. Audiophiles are great aren't they!
So our original plan of using the BF861C went down in flames. We just didn't have anywhere near enough gain. Alan suggested trying some Chinese bought BF862 i had. I wasn’t keen as i feel the BF861C sounded more transparent. However in the context of it being an experiment, I went with it.
They have worked perfectly in the application, reducing around 3db of noise and boosting the gain, and whats more, Alan also realised that the BF861B was a closer match to the originally produced BF862!
SO, I have ordered 40 BF861B to try in the multiFET boards. If these work as expected, i will make the fully populated boards available to the BB3 owners out there. If they don't, i will offer them with the BF862, as i feel they are significant enough to warrant the upgrade option.
In terms of listening observations, the MultiFET boards have had a very significant impact. It’s almost digital like in the silence of the background. In fact, if I were to drop the needle with the volume up high enough to hear and noise, my speakers would end up in the road after a huge explosion from the drivers evaporating.
The soundstage is cleaner for it too. Things seem to hang in the air a little more, liquidity is much improved and detail retrieval has benefitted too. The real eye opener has been how much noise has been affecting the sound. I think it’s safe to say that until Alan and I finally heard a Paradise Phonostage, we hadn't had our eyes (or ears) opened to the benefits such a quiet background can offer. I am not say the BIgbottle is at Paradise levels of Quiet, just that thanks to the exposure to it (after years of trying to hear one) it’s proved beneficial.
Paradise makes things appear out of thin air. That was one of the things the Bigbottle didnt do when Simon and I had a little bakeoff here. However, the Bigbottle is now delivering at a much more comparable level to how i remember the Paradise sounding.
I am looking forward to the day that Alan and i can sit down with my BB3 and his Paradise phonostage and do a proper bakeoff.
In my opinion, the BB3 has taken a good step forward with the MultiFET boards and I am sincerely hopeful that the BF861B will prove me right, and offer just a smidgen more than the BF862’s.
Hope to have all the bits I need to get some built this week. I will keep you all updated! .

What you mean the resistors on the board don't compensate for it? 🤣

Turns out i owe Jimmy Page a bit of an apology.....
Year ago, Jimmy pAge remastered and remixed the Led Zed IV album. Being one of those "must have" albums, i bought it. Played it once and put it in the rack. Only to resurface whenever i have needed to fully hear how bad i can make a phonostage sound. Honestly, since i've owned it, i have hated it.
In fact, if you were to scour google, you will see me slate this mix and pressing without prejudice.
Well Mr Page....i apologise.
Turns out that it's actually pretty superb. I will freely admit, i have never put the Bigbottle, the Mordaunt Short 880 or the HA103-SEL through the rigours of this LP...until today.
Seems i just hadn't got the ability in the system to unpack the mix previously. The HA103 and the BB3 have revealed the multilayered mix and i finally hear what Mr Page was aiming to put together on this mix.
There is still IGD on Stairway to heaven, which isn't his fault, and a terrible scratchy noise towards the end, but i can't blame Mr Page for that.
I feel like i have gained a new LP to actually listen to!

Have to say that there is a lot more to this album than it first appears. I am starting to appreciate the layers in the mix more too, but this is now only really obvious with the BB3 . I have a classic records cut though. Great album.
