Seems the relief was a false dawn....... The Kb has been inspected and it's not good news. Kilian called me to tell me the Kb is on its last legs. Apparently whilst inspecting it, Kilian found a shard of metal lodged in the Left Coil. Upon closer inspection, this shard has sat at a 90deg angle and behaved like a saw, cutting into the coils. In Kilians words "it's about 90% through the coil, and will go at any moment. It will not survive much longer. It is impossible to repair and also impossible to upgrade the cartridge" I am totally gutted. The Kb has been a godsend and been my longest serving piece of equipment. Kilian could hear the disappointment in my voice and couldn't apologise enough. It's not his fault, or that of anyone else, just one of those things, I said. I chatted with him for a bit and decided that I had no idea what to do next. So I bought one of his HA100SLE cartridges for €1900. Love a gamble, me. sorry to hear that oli,but out of everything negative comes a positive as micheal caine would say. is that the denon 103 killian upgrade you've gone for? if its like the 103sa but with a better stylus profile you will like it i think.

Gutted for you Oli. However.. Kilian ain’t going to produce a duff product. His reputation is immense and I suspect you will end up being a very happy bunny. Leap in the dark for sure, but the guy is a quality act.

Easy for you to say lol....your Kb is safe and sound and upgraded lol Ye, massive shot in the dark, no doubt but like you say, the guy has a great reputation and his work is top class.. If he thinks his cartridge is good, I'll find out.

Just been reading this post with my mouth open Oli, what a bugger, very sorry for you mate. That is indeed a very bad piece of news.
Hope the alternative you are buying meets expectation.
No chance of buying another Kb? These are some floating around. I sold mine to Mike on AOS he may have it still for sale. Also Alan T (R2R) may have one spare going?

I know Jim, I was stuck in disbelief myself... I've taken it as a sign, or a nudge, to try something new. Kilian Is grafting and receiving very little recognition outside of a small group in Holland. You know me, I like to try new things and if it's any good, it would be nice to share the good news. Of course, it not be my thing and I'll need to reevaluate where I go next but I've landed on some great stuff when a gamble came my way so I'm hoping for another home run I'd waited 2+ years to get the Vienna mods done to my Kb and I am gutted that it'll never happen now, but it is what it is. An opportunity to try something new.

I did consider the option of buying another Kb and Kilian did suggest that to be fair to him. Said he could make one good one out of the two but i couldnt get past the fact i could buy another with unseen, purely incidental issues. Decided to go new...For the first time in MC carts. We will see.

Ye, he said it's only 2nd or 3rd time hed ever seen it land at 90deg in the coil and cause that issue, in 28years. Said he's seen absolutely loads with a piece lying flat but basically harmless in that position, just not ideal for sound. Usually, any shards or specs find a safe place to just linger. But not this time. Typically it would be mine that does it in the most destructive way. Sh#t happens.

Having spend £13 on cartridge mounting bolts...quite insanely embedded in paranoia, I then went and found my small tub of cartridge bolts. Bugger. I then decided to see what they were made of. Turns out over 80% were steel. Of the 20% left, I seem to have a decent selection of aluminium (magnet tested) bolts that should be perfect for the job. What interested me was that although I bought most of those bolts from Ebay and am totally to blame for them being steel, "the right one" (company name) actually sell steel ones deliberately Bonkers. I must say, I've learned a valuable lesson here and there will be absolutely nothing even slightly magnetic getting near my Turntable again. Now, I just have to figure out how to adjust my tonearm height without using a steel screwdriver.......

Atkre the screwdrivers provided with MC cartridges magnetic?
Kilian may be able to provide you one?
Just think, a few weeks ago you were talking about stopping with vinyl, and now you have done a classic 180 with a new cartridge.

I did that a while ago.
Also bear in mind that if you use the metallic scales to measure the VTF, they may also be magnetic. Not desirable with an MC.
