As many of you know I volunteer in my local charity shop pricing vinyl and CD for sale. Value of CDs is rocketing, It is not unusual to get £10+ for valuable CDs, which makes a huge difference for the charity. Please keep donating unlisted to CDs as folk like me can recycle them on to new owners for them to enjoy and at the same time we make good money for our chosen charities Jesus… can’t stop, on my way to Wolverhampton with some empty bags. lol… not really. 🤣

The fall of streaming may be inevitable according to some journalists, other think a restructure is coming. What is inevitable is that the cost is going to go up. CDs are still cheap as chips and IMHO sound better than streaming, so find some storage space and get collecting!!

And there are some very cheap cds out there, just like the bargains to be had with vinyl 15 years ago. The value of some though, blow my mind, however I’m not that bother about picking up the latest rare 1990s 00’s drum and base or hot house😁. Most stuff I’m interested in is not worth big money. As with you Bigman80 the limiting thing is the space to store them. Don’t know how that works though as they are so much smaller than an LP. 🤣

Trouble is as Oli has mentioned CD used prices have been rising over years and some things are just getting to be very silly money . Charity shops are a good source for next to nothing but you have to sort through lots of dross to find the odd jewel . Then people like Pete are alerting them to the gems and raising the prices , this is not getting at this practice they need the money it just makes it much harder to find for the likes of me . I adopted CD when it first came out but made a promise to myself then I would never buy any single CD over £10 and I still keep to this today . Recently there have been some older releases that have been £25 - £60 so never going to buy . You can sometimes get downloads from the likes of Bandcamp and Qobuz and others and these are often below the the limit for rpice but I would prefer the CD .

Charity shops aside, where are you all going for your CD's?
Luckily I kept all mine, couldn't bear to part with them even though I'd never listened to one for years. Getting the Lector has changed that so I fancy getting into collecting again.

Love cd and find some offerings can really satisfy and thrill sonically, pretty much as much as vinyl does in my set up. I wouldnt be without my cdp / cd. I was never interested in the streaming thing but get why folk decide to go that route for space, convenience etc.

Oli as I currently have just under 4800 cd,s and two more arrive d this morning , BJ Cole since you asked , can I just keep going ? How many of these have you played in the last two years? A rough calculation, if listening to your music for 5 hours per day, this would give you nearly 3 yrs of material, that is not taking into account all your favourites which will probably get played more often.

Perhaps I am the unusual one in this group!

Seeing the Amadou and Mariam album in there reminded me of the time we went to see them at Liverpool Phil. Not being the most popular act in the world I had the choice of seats. So I said to Fiona ‘how about right down the front?’ No.no…no. You know I hate being so close to the artist. Ok… how about row D? No..no, too close. Row G? Well… I guess, but still think it’ll be too close. I never heard the end of it.. until the night of the concert. I could hardly stop laughing as the two blind singers were led out onto the stage.

First charity box ready to go! I’d be very happy to receive that as a charity donation! But what, no Take That, Robbie Williams or Patsy Cline! 😁

Is that from your own collection?

First charity box ready to go! Yeah, Leonard Cohen. Get it gone! Renting music is like renting a house. They can jack the monthly payment up, they can take it off you, they can come in and mess about with it, and there's nothing you can do about it. I don't understand the storage thing. There's an alcove at one end of the room I estimate I could fit 6000 CDs in there easy. In one alcove. I have about 400. I'm not a collector I just buy the stuff I like, so I'll never own thousands of them. Youtube on my laptop is perfectly adequate for deciding if I like something before I buy it, don't need super sound quality for that. And it's free.

Getting the Lector has changed that so I fancy getting into collecting again. charity shops, ebay, Amazon sellers are all a good source. Rarely pay more than a fiver including post. Second hand record shop in the next town over has CDs. I go up there every few months and clean it out. He says I'm the only one who buys them so no danger of missing out on anything! All the other customers are youths in their twenties and early thirties digging through the vinyl. Anyone over 40 comes in they're selling not buying. Probably because they think they 'Can get it all on streaming.'

I like YouTube. Fantastically natural sq on some live recorded classical stuff. I mean strangely so. It can be so magically natural in a you are there kind of way. Sure, some of it sounds appalling, but hey ho.
I could live with YT as my sole source if I had to. But I don't have to.
I keep a couple thousand CDs just in case the foretellers of doom turn out to be right.

I think that Leonard Cohen is one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation , but for the most part I just can not get on with his voice . This does not stop me from having probably all of his albums on CD outside of the live recordings . The album I play most of though is That Old Blue Raincoat by Jenifer Warnes which is an album of all Laughing Len,s songs but with a voice I can warm to . Jenifer makes the songs shine with very simple arrangements that let the lyrics and music be the star .

Having the CD's in the old grow room has allowed me to finally start clearing out the garage. This has been a long time coming, so along with the box of CDs i put together, i have also donated a AR turntable, Creek AM/FM tuner, Monitor Audio speakers, a few kids toys and a couple of suitcases.
I was really pleased with myself and came home full of vigour to carry on...until i found ANOTHER huge box of CDs and around another 100-150 in one of the filing cabinets i was planning on removing. I am now listening to a few lol.
One of the more welcome finds is a CD lens cleaning disc!
I have given the Kenwood x9010 a few passes and it's playing perfectly again. It had developed a bit of a crackle here and there, but it's sound bloody good. What a great find.

Ha! you and the man himself! Brilliant. Was that in India? Yes, Mumbai in 1999 or 2000. Strange set of circumstances. We’d been there a couple of years and I found myself being made chairman of the expat club in south Mumbai, Breach Candy Club. Leonard started going there and I got to know him. A year later (again through a bizarre set of circumstances) I ended up giving him membership and we met frequently. The video is of us getting very excited about the ability to take videos on a laptop. Funny old world.

Some of the Tiny Desk gigs sound great, as do Playing For Change.
