I must say I think Control Ones are utter Sh#t. We used to stock them in Richer Sounds so I had plenty chance to play. I even took a pair home to see if they worked in a small room. Terrible things imo. I haven’t heard that many JBLs but all have been garbage.

I’m sat listening to the PT De Capo using an Arcam Alpha as a transport. Pleasing weight and solidity but definitely lower resolution than I’m used to. Quite a step down, which surprises me.

I’m also using different interconnect and digital lead, as well as an active rather than direct input, so that may be playing a part. I did compare directly last time with same transport, cables and input. There was still a big detail gap. I’d expected a PT product to be state of the art for detail.....and probably lacking in weight. In reality, it’s state of the art for weight and lacking detail. Hifi is s funny old game.

Terrible things imo. I haven’t heard that many JBLs but all have been garbage. But you claimed to love Kans - and Kans have substantially more faults in my experience.. My own JBL Control One's have a delightful communicative midrange, no bass a la Kans and a nondescript but never horrible hf range in recent incarnations.
I first heard Control Ones in an early form as part of an AV system used with the matching sub. Memories are of a sting up-top and little else. Current ones don't do this at all. My pair which I use(d) for amp testing, have glued-in (hot melt) tweeters but current ones use a foam ring instead, making tweeter replacement much easier. Go into a club, restaurant or store and if the PA playing in the background makes you want to even begin to listen to the music played, I can guarantee it's coming over via Control Ones - well it has to me anyway...
So, JBL's are garbage? I just can't let that one go, sorry! I admit they've made 'hundreds' of models over the years, but some of them are absolutely effin' brilliant. The budget 'Bolivar' line of forty years ago had two (now) medium to large size stand-mounters of good quality as well and even these didn't ruin speech or timbres, yet funked it out with the best of 'em in a way UK speakers just couldn't do back then (apart from Mission 720's and 730's at far higher price). Notable JBL's for me were L65 Jubals, L26 Decades, L150's, L200's, 4311mk2's I think they were, resurrected in the late 90's and also twenty years ago, there was a £1k approx floor standing model that many UK dealers were pleased with. The 4367 is a masterwork IMO and these but hint at the current active-passive k2 model. I still haven't heard the L100mk2 although my local dealer had a pair on order I can listen to when they're not busy.

The JBLs I’ve heard have been garbage....to me. Lots of JBLs I haven’t heard though. My Kan days are past but those baby JBLs would probably be beaten by a Bose Wave, they are so bad.....All,IMO of course.

They haven't been £49 for a very long time - £79 is the price now.
Have you heard the Bose Wave radios? Mini TL's with plenty of eq to give a rich tone. I'd like to compare one with the Naim Muso's, especially the cuboid thing they make.

I had a Wave very briefly. I thought it might suffice for a bedroom abroad but it fell way short of my needs. Never heard a Muso yet. I’d expect them to better a Bose, but I could be completely wrong.

I've got some JBL Control Ones - they are good for the money, superb build quality. One of my brothers was checking them out last time he was down, he picks one up and was amazed at how heavy it was. They're nothing like a proper JBL though. Bit muddy in the mids but they have a balanced sound, bass isn't missing like it is on a lot of miniatures.
Mine are doing nothing now but they have been the fronts and the rears on my 5.1 system in the past and do an excellent job of that.

Should also say that proper JBLs will ruthlessly reveal any problems with amp and source. So you have to take that into account when heard in unfamiliar systems where you don't know what could be wrong.

I’m really loving the Petite 3s now that be become accustomed to their voicing. This has me at I can finally get on with refurbish the Spicas. Right now they don’t look greatlll I still need to work out what I do with the felt fronts, but yeh cabinets will be re-veneered in zebrano negro. I’m gonna take my time over this one because I want to enjoy it and do it well.

One question: I need 4x 22uf 50v bipolar caps for the crossovers. Any suggestions of make and where to get? I used Jensen’s in the past but I can’t find the right value.

I'm sure you'll make a fantastic job of them Westie. I used to have many more tools and better dexterity in my right arm and hand. I guess it will just be a case of not settling for anything other than flawless. If it means re-work, it’s better than a bad job.

I got rid of all my tools when I moved abroad, then got out of the habit of doing smaller jobs.

Just bought Kans no 49! Complete dogs which were in desperate need of a resto. An ideal opportunity to put me one pair away from that magic 50. There is zero chance of me keeping these. I’ve gone right off them, but I do like fixing things, so this seemed ideal
I will hang up my gloves when I hit 50, unless I see a par I can make a bundle on.

Have you calculated the cost in total? Got to be a couple grand at the very least! S.

48 pairs before you went right off them... 47 actually Pair 48 were a real shocker! The thing with Kans is that you have to build a system that favours them. You need a Linn or Roksan deck, or a Naim CD player, plus Naim or Farlowe era Exposure amps and K20 cable. In those circumstances I’d probably enjoy them again, but I’ve moved onto stuff I enjoy more and I’m not as limited in terms of what sounds good. I still have really fond memories of Kan systems but the only listening I plan to do with these is to test them. Pair no 50 will either be bought as a refurb or a money maker. You can’t stop at 49

Not many folk can say that, eh?

A couple of bits arrived today. I decided I quite like then Kelvin K2 interconnects so I bought the last two pairs. I now have 5. Handy for playing with kit because they are flexible and well made. Sound better than AC110 to me.
Another bit is the original Gyropower PSU (the see-through acrylic one) and Papst motor. I need to make a motor housing so it may be a while before I get it done. I only paid fifty quid though, so it’s a bargain, I reckon.
Not here yet, but I got a bargain Nait 2. It will do for testing the Kans and it will let me finally hear one.
