A speaker with an odd compromised balance will sound different according to the listener's mood. A bigger better model in my experience, almost always sounds more even from day to day and good sound isn't so dependent on the listener. Just my take of course.

I've only heard Kans once and not for long so a useless review We were in Sound Advice in Loughborough and heard a really good sound coming from the little demo room upstairs. Poked our head in to see these tiny speakers stuffed against the back wall and were shown the rack of electronics powering a pair of fully active Kans. Very impressive for the short time we heard them, loads of bass in particular out of a tiny box.

Yep, Kans are usually heaven or hell depending on siting and partnering equipment, You need to pour a big sound into them to make them come alive. You also need to ensure they are absolutely rigid and close to a rear wall. An off-beat but repeatably proven tip is to have shelves or some other wall mounted objects above them. No idea why, but below bookshelves is the absolute optimum, even if that means alcoves. I’ve repeated this trick myself several tunes and led others to the same discovery.
My first encounter with Kans, I called them “the worst speakers I’ve ever heard.......but somehow fascinating”. These days I just think they speak a different dialect and you need to make an effort if you want to hear the message.

I quite like them as they are, will be interested to see what black wood stain does to them.

Other option was black nitrocellulose lacquer, but I figured that was even more risky. I had a broken binding post but I’ve sourced an identical replacement and removed the old one ready for soldering. I’ve also rubbed the fronts down for black respray. Grilles are unmarked so I plan to leave alone. Thnakfully I have so much experience with kans, things like removing grilles, drivers and terminals drowned in hot melt glue are all bread and butter.

I'm too lazy to read back on your posts, Westie. But what happened to your Duevel Planets?
Are the Planets easy to set up? I'd imagine they don't fight against most rooms etc. But nothing's perfect of course.
Might like to try pair someday.

Beaten ultimately by Spica TC60s although I was sorely tempted to keep the planets and lose the Spicas because the Planets simply filled the room with sound. You didn’t need to listen attentively. They also looked beautiful. I’ve seen dogs anuses that were prettier than Spicas. My thoughts were that my most likely home for Planets would be my next place in Cyprus. When that time comes, I will just buy a new pair and have the sent straight there. They are under 1000 Euros new, so not a massive expense. A shiny new pair with no additional shipping hassles is highly likely down the line. White or silver is the only dilemma. Planets are a doddle to set up. They simply work anywhere except hard against a wall or in corners. They aren’t particularly sensitive to spacing or toe in and they are very easy to drive.

Nait just arrived. Pics fresh out of the box... Kans are going to look like new when done. Black wood dye and waxing is infinitely superior to black paint,

Nait sounds seductive in my 2nd system. Better than Nait 1? No idea at this stage. Does sound different though. A bit more like a baby Naim than the mk1.

"A bit more like a baby Naim than the mk1" - please explain Westie. The new Nait looks almost new. Black stain and a waxing sounds good. Edit: Should have said black stain and a waxing on your Kans sounds good.

Edit: Should have said black stain and a waxing on your Kans sounds good. The Nait 1 is different to other Naim amps. You can hear many Naim traits but it can be more extreme in terms of how vividly it portrays music. The Nait 2 is a bit more like a lesser version of aNaim Pre/power with a bit more of a mainstream sound, maybe “watered down Naim” versus “concentrated Naim” would be a useful analogy.

I’ll put some Kan pics up over the weekend. I wish I’d replaced the grille fabric but I didn’t order any.

I like the original Nait, didn't expect to. Never heard the 2. The only other Naim I recall hearing was the full 6 pack with the top pre-amp and full Linn Lp12 rigout. That was quite impressive but a bit edgy, I couldn't relax listening to it.

Can you relax a little bit listening to the Nait 1, Macca?

Yes - it was quite pleasant on the ear with just a bit of crunch. Speakers were some old Rogers effort, can't recall the TT and cart but it wasn't anything fancy. Listened to Hendrix and some Santana. And some other stuff I forget. Good system, not the last word or even close to it but enjoyable with no nasties.

This Nait 2 is showing some real synergy with the Neats. Still can’t hold a candle to the Campion but it’s bloody enjoyable nonetheless. It’s more full bodied than the mk1. I think I initially underestimated it. Sonically it’s unremarkable but it has musically rewarding facets that emerge when you listen longer,

BTW it was only Shane’s liking of Petite 3s that led me to revisit them, so cheers for that!

Glad you are having fun, Westie. Does the 2 drive the Neats well at low volume?

I wanted to try the amp but I’d really intended selling it right away and making a fast buck, given what I paid for it. Not gonna happen. I’m now wondering about Nait and Neats in a second system. Nait and Kans? Maybe I need a Nait 1 lol.

Bob at Neat is a good chap to deal with. Might look out for a Nait 2 early next year. But I'd like an olive one though.

I'm not surprised that the Neats are bonding well with the Nait. Bob at Neat owns a Nait 2 and rates it!

Oh and it’s real, fun. Not exactly accurate, but who cares when it’s compelling. Looks wise, I prefer a Nait 1 and Olive Nait 2, but it’s still a nice looking amp. My wife was always a sucker for then”cute little eyes” on Naim CB stuff so she loves it,
