Yes, the danger of the obsess-obsessed causation loop.
I believe there is a website where you can go to view people who are trapped in it, just like touring a psychiatric hospital in Victorian times. Only it's more unpleasant.

Err... lunatic. Singular. Self-proclaiming/Egotistical/Controlling/Somewhat Hypercritical - Lunatic! Yes!! And bullying has nothing to do with seeking approval; it's about control. It's about exerting control over others. It has to do with inadequacy. The bloke that bullies his wife with domestic violence, does he do it out of inadequacy? Possibly. More usually it's to dominate and control. Some blokes' have the mentality that a wife is their property. I suppose you might regard such a person as inadequate. Bullies at school never appeared inadequate.

What has me grasping for rational thought, are those individuals that slag-off quite viciously a forum and it's members, for years - and then they go and join the very same forum. It does have me wondering about the values such a person might have.

Attention seeking looser's, look at me, look at what I got, look at how much money I made today, look at how much I got in the bank, over and over again. The internet is full of shallow little stupid unpleasant people, who judge their worth by others failures, and are to pathetic and plain downright ignorant, to realise that money and attention is not what life is all about.

It does have me wondering about the values such a person might have. As Groucho Marx said: 'I'm sorry, but those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.' And, in the same film: 'Gentlemen, we are fighting to protect this woman's honour. Which, let's face it, is more than she ever did.' Actually, most if not all forums are splinter groups set up by one or more malcontent who has flounced, or been banned from, A.N. Other forum. They immediately ban the forum owner who banned them. Everyone else is essentially a non-combatant, treading a sometimes difficult line between several powerful egos. Sometimes they get caught in the crossfire.

Completely and totally agree with this post. I was one of those pathetic and plain downright ignorant people prior to being diagnosed with my ongoing chronic health condition, and now realise that family is the only important thing in life, everything else can do one.

Sometimes they get caught in the crossfire. pretty much sums it up. It gets harder every day to remember if you are in the Judean People's Front or the People's Front Of Judea. All just a microcosm of how the real world works. As above, so below, and all that.
I'm willing to accept that I am a bit crazy or at least slightly eccentric. But then it is an Englishman's God-given right to be a bit crazy or eccentric. So I don't see any problem with that in me or anyone else.
The reason that the internet is full of 'shallow, stupid unpleasant little people' is because the world is full of them. As there's not really anything that can be done about that I don't understand why people bother to complain about it.

I think most people are OK for the most part, though I guess we can all be shallow, stupid or unpleasant at times. (Come to think of it, I'm quite little all of the time). Most forum hoo-hahs are highly amusing to non-combatants. As someone said of disputes in academia 'Feelings run so high because the stakes are so low'.

The thing about forum car crashes is they are a bit like Jerry Springer Show. Or Jeremy Kyle. The first one you see is gripping. Then you see a few more and you start to realise it's the same thing each time. Then you stop bothering. I only ever read hi-fi forums but I assume that they happen everywhere. I also suspect that hi-fi forums are pretty reserved in such things compared to other areas of the internet. I mean check out the comments under you-tube videos.
The medium is the problem. Discussing something contentious with a stranger in a pub you have to be a bit more careful in what you say in case he turns out to be a nut and suddenly glasses you. But the lack of that danger on the internet means people have free reign. I suppose if you are the type who would not normally say boo to a goose it can be quite liberating. Or do those types stay quiet on the net as well? Is it just the gobshites who get even worse?
The pub down my street is a house now but when it was going you would often see two lads outside facing off like gunslingers in some sort of 21st century post-industrialist western. And a big crowd gathered to watch. Usually in the summer at the weekend when they'd been drinking since noon. Even then it would rarely degenerate into physical combat. Lots of 'This is your last warning pal...'and so forth. I mean as soon as someone says something like that you know they don't really fancy it.

It’s the same type that you get in road rage incidents. No fear of reprisal as they are safe in their metal box.

An idiot is an idiot you cant beat the stupid out of them, killing them does not help either, they just come back as idiots, why do think there are so many idiots. You get very few stupid dogs but plenty stupid people. Like a certain nincompoop who uses a fellow forum members photograph, yes his actual mug shot as his avatar. Trying to provoke a reaction, like all pathetic stupid little boys this churlish lover of toilet humour is best ignored.

Or follow someone they want to intimidate, The only ting that really enrages me is tech,

Must not try that sh to often in the new wild west called Africa, unless you like the taste of lead that is. Lived there for nine years as a child- Zambia and RSA. Saw some crazy things.. Have very fond memories of my youth spent in the bush with my mates and the dogs every afternoon after school and the weekends in the then Northern Rhodesia. We ran wild were gone for hours on end. It was perfectly safe for a kid to run wild in those days. Even in the wilds of Africa. I watched as a great country the then Rhodesia descended into starvation and poverty. Lived there during the bush war, a total waste of time in the end, had some hair raising near misses, nevertheless I survived. Just hope I can survive the few years left to me. Looking at the state the world is in now perhaps I am in a way lucky to be stuck here as nobody wants to mass migrate here and we have nothing to offer besides great weather, beautiful scenery, and empty wild places and beaches. In fact some of our northern African brothers who came as economic migrants are returning to their home countries.

Here is my simple, 100% accurate 'are you a forum gobshite?' test.
How many forums are you banned from? Score 10 for each.
How many forums have you flounced from? Score 10 for each.
Have you ever threatened violence or death on-line? Score 20 for each threat issued.
Have you ever mentioned how rich you are? Score 1 for each mention of your net worth.
Do you routinely classify groups of people you don't know as toffs, chavs, feckless, losers? Score 5 points for each classification, with 10 bonus points if you call the latter 'loosers'.
Add up your score.
0-10: No trace of gobshitery
11-35: You need to rein it in a bit
36-50: Borderline gobshite
Above 50: Full-blown gobshite

I’d need pen, paper, a calculator and an hour or two to get an accurate score .....but that stuff is only for nerds, freaks, geeks and saddos
