Okay, only a bit of fun. I often feel like we assume that everyone wants the same thing. For one I don’t believe this is the case. For another, I tend to think most systems can’t capture the original sound in all aspects and tend to represent certain facets.
On that basis, I thought I’d have a go at describing what I seek from my hifi. This is in no particular order.
1. It has to start and stop when it should. Beats and rhythm are important to me. Any system that is slack here just won’t engage me. 2. I can’t bear hardness and glare. There has to be a total absence. 3. Space and soundstage HxWxD are vital to me. An expansive sound is my ideal. 4. A late addition to priorities: It has to come alive at lower volumes as well as higher ones.
Of course, there are non-sonic aspects that also matter to me, it has to look and feel appealing. It has to be well built and it’s unlikley to be built by committee. I tend to like hearing one persons vision so I tend to buy from one-man designers.

I like a sound I can listen to for a long time - not fatiguing. If I can't listen for more than 20 minutes it's irrelevant whether it's amazingly accurate, has bass extension whatever. Its why I like my Tannoys, I can listen to them all day without getting tired of them. After that it's the music - I'd rather have good music on a phone speaker than bad music on a superb system.

Clarity.
Timing & timbre.
Engagement at low volume.

I'm crap at describing sounds, even more so at describing what sort of sound I like or seek. With that caveat, I guess I just want a sound that will engage me, and not fatigue me to the extent that I can only listen for 30 mins or so. Most of the limitations of systems I've become dissatisfied with have been down to the speakers and the room in which they're located. Headphone listening has usually been problem-free.

I like it to sound like it does in the studio. And it did until my Krell went on the fritz.

Any news on the Krell Macca? As for music, detail, clarity and non fatiguing.

As long the system gives me pleasure and enjoyment. If the system sounds good to my ears then I'm happy, and willing to put up with some of it's flaws.
Yes, I dislike harsh sounding systems.

Clarity. Timing & timbre. Engagement at low volume. Timbre is an interesting one. The Ref 3a MM De Capos were outstanding in this respect. So much so that they caused me to think of timbre fir the first time ever.

Sounstaging and imaging is what I initially focus on- I seem to be quite sensitive to phase.
Probably why I like these OTL amps, it’s what they excel at.

I'd have thought those terms sum up Linn Kans very neatly, yet you seem to like them!

He's not sure if he like them, or not. Too early to tell. Be fair, ask him when he gets past the 50th pair...

I will definitely need another couple of pairs to be sure. Even then, they made 48000 pairs. I’ve only tried 0.1 percent of them. That’s not even statistically significant! Far, far too early to tell.

In my younger days, I have to admit to being a bit of a boom & tizz man. I did, however, change quite quickly to holographic imagery. Then, additionally, ethereal, and then additionally to that, palpability. So holographic ethereal palpability.

It didn't last for long, as I said. When I started messing with Quad and building 4 channel decoders, imagery became far more important to me.
Ethereal quality came from noticing the effects of mains quality. Sometimes in the day, the sound was sat-on and leaden. Other times it was devoid of this sat-on leaden effect, and as such, the sound had a sort of ethereal quality about it. I could only put it down to the mains, as there really wasn't anything else to account for it.
Palpability exposure came by virtue of a DIY turntable with ADC ALT1 arm with A&R C77 cartridge, DIY phono stage and power amp with Castle Richmond speakers. I really disliked the arm and it's the only item of hi-fi I've felt that way about. I was listening to Dusty Springfield's The Look Of Love and the sax solo had such a palpable rhasp. Reaked havoc with me stomach.
On the news, at 60, Julian Richer has given 60% of his company to his employees.

I feel the same way about the Rega R200. Nasty, cheaply made thing, overrated by many. Hopefully they'll all end up in the bin when the supply of bias belts runs out.

I’ve cleared my vinyl replay out completely so I don’t have it now. No idea what to buy unless a nice boxed Xerxes comes up.
