I could be bunging just about anything up here. I'll start with these Ruark Swordsman Plus speakers. I'm picking them up tomorrow morning, this is the seller's photo. Having heard these many years ago and liked them, I though I'd get a pair to play around with.

Nothing wrong with playing. It’s a really fun and cheap means of entertainment, I’ve had a couple of pairs in my time They sounded a bit congested to me and I did wonder about either dabbling with crossover and cabling or yanking out most of the wadding. They are well made with decent drivers so the potential should be there.

Only a couple of Ruarks I have not heard and these are one of them. Cut above are Ruark. Or were.

I actually recall the Swordsman Plus as pretty revealing and transparent. My memory may be playing tricks, but I don't think so.

Prologue 1s were pretty dire.

It’ll be interesting to hear how they align with your earlier impressions, Geoff.

Always fancied getting a listen to a set of Ruark speakers but never got round to it . Another one looking forward to your opinion of these Geoff .

Prologue 1s were pretty dire. You can add Epilogues to that list. Truly awful.

Seems Ruarks are a 'Marmite' product. I know they have some fans.

Been listening to these Swordsman Plus speakers, since collecting them earlier. Nothing thick or dull about them. My memory was accurate, they sound pretty damn good.

Just bought another Quad 306. That's two now. Good little amps.

Just making a passive pre-amp to go with the Quad 306. It will have two switchable inputs and one output. I'm using a 250k log pot, as the Quad has a high input sensitivity, hopefully the volume advance with this will be OK. I've finished cutting out the holes in front & rear panels, now to wire up and assemble.

Is there a better place to get them than Rapid?

I buy nearly all my bits from ebay. Just keep an eye out for phoney branded stuff like potentiometers.

Will be decent enough when built especially as it's beer money to do. 😎

I also need a bigger one for a 'super' TPA3116 amp I'm thinking of putting together.

I don't know the maths, but do you think the 250k pot rating will be ok? I'm more used to 47k or lower with solid state power amps... 306 input impedance is a claimed 20k.

Deliberately chosen because of the high 0.375v input sensitivity on the Quad 306. A bit of a stab in the dark, but I reckon it will roll the volume in more gently than 50k for instance.

Ok. Just thinking of high frequency roll-off or maybe even hum, that's all. Sorry if this is out of turn. I've reduced the input sensitivity of my 303 a bit so it can be used with anything...

Just been trying the passive pre-amp, it sounds just fine. Can't say there's much difference in volume progression compared to the 50k Little Bear passive though. Never mind, I'm sure it'll come in handy. I'll change the input sensitivity on one of the 306 power amps to suit, already got some 27 ohm carbon film resistors handy.

The Alps pot in the one I built will probably last longer and having two switchable inputs will be handy.
