I borrowed a mates 6 digit multimeter last year, good for 0.0001mV resolution. I never got round to using it until today setting up this Paradise, trimming the input stage offset. I usually find 0.1mV plus and minus and set the trim pot half way, which is usually 180 degrees from either position.
Did this today and then plugged in his Sigilent and whadya know, I was a whole 0.005mV high. Not bad for a best guess. No matter how much I try I cant beat that theres just enough finesse in the trim pot.
Not exactly small enough for the back pocket though.

Get yourself one of those Poacher's jackets, you'll be fine.....

Feel free to delete them, BO. No real issue with me. Well... I'm like that. No ego. Just posted them as the mood took me. And all things are transitory...
And yes. It is a Phase Linear 400. The Pink Floyd reference was a giveaway.

Two questions, if I may:
Why do you think chokes aren't used more often in power supplies (cost aside)?
You've mentioned the arm lead being the most important in hour view. Considering how the signal is generated, do think a BIG FAT MONSTER of a cable could be viewed as an impediment?

Chokes are big, they're expensive, they have a radiated field that needs addressing via space or alignment, they add significant impedance to the psu rails.
Take hammond's 158t in the Paradise, theres four of them, nearly 100 euros total cost. A simple lm317 costs about 50p.
Also a choke regulated psu balances current against voltage and requires a minimum current drain to be effective, an lm317 regulates voltage and will deliver any current up to the limit of the device.
So they're good for putting in big boxes, good for circuits with a fixed power consumption, class a small stuff or before shunt regulated supplies.
I'm sure Alan has used them in more varied circumstances than I have. They certainly work in the paradise, where due to the bandwidth of the class A shunt regs on the main boards you couldnt effectively feed them with a slower acting psu/reg.

Thanks. I was aware of some of what you say. I was just thinking back to Musical Fidelity's first use of choke regulated power supplies in one of their power amps, in the late 80s, I think. At the time it seemed like a bit of a novel approach to power supplies in transistor designs. I know they continued with it elsewhere. Don't know if they still.

Mf has used it many times, was the it the A3CR amp you were thinking off? They've used it in cd players as well.

PSU all done, some small fiddling with main boards to complete.

OK, picked up my Paradise phono stage today (it was essential, honestly constable).
Have to say it is one mesmerizing stage, so quiet a background and so clear and smooth. Wow.

I heard the Paradise about 5 years ago and it did wipe the floor with every other phono stage going at that bake off.
Maybe I should be saving up for a slice of paradise?

Now that you're valve free you'll have to change you forum name to Fire. Another convert, nice work Simon.

The Paradise is a top class phono. No argument from me. It wasnt an accident that I bought PCBs not long after hearing Simons. Although, Simon did offer me a set of Paradise PCBs and as of yet they havent materialised......may have to reassess his membership status I must say, I am really tempted to get a Paradise build underway. I still like the idea of a one box build, in the denafrips style as I mentioned before, and Alan and I discussed earlier today. I'm quite prepared for it to fail too and need a second box, so its definitely one for the future.

Oli, youd really struggle to get it quiet in one box unless you built the psu into an entirely sealed sub box. Even with a steel lid on the psu and steel floor on the other chassis you cant stack them directly.
It's the requirement for venting the main chassis that makes it awkward.

4 boxes, everyone should have a 4 box phonostage. You know you need 4 boxes..........

Didn't realise there was a headphone amp though.
