I don't think anyone thought to take them along to a hi-fi show.

It's too expensive, but I'd never ever call it crap... sounded almost no different to the rega 300 it replaced..3k for a tone arm? worth about 60 quid imho. like most hifi..over rated over priced shite

Never owned or used a 'modern' SME. I'm still perfectly happy using the Mission 774 I bought from Denys Trickett for £200 in 1980.

It's too expensive, but I'd never ever call it crap... sounded almost no different to the rega 300 it replaced..3k for a tone arm? worth about 60 quid imho. like most hifi..over rated over priced shite The RB300 when properly matched to a turntable, is basically inert and any niggles seem to have been refined out in current 330 models it appears. HOWEVER, you can't adjust it fully and the finish is pretty crap by any standards, with cosmetic flaws in the casting left with the powder coating. Rega take greater pains regarding finish, wiring and other fine details in their top versions, which are over a grand I think..
The SME 309, IV and V are equally inert and this upsets some people who don't perhaps realise that it's the resonances in lower caste arms that they like, as it adds to the vinyl 'flavour.'
Thing is, the materials used *and the finish achieved* in an SME top model isn't cheap to accomplish and used to involve outwork I gather. I've said elsewhere that in far eastern markets, if the gear had gold price tags attached, they'd be on full show along with removed speaker grilles (who cares if the speakers were designed with grilles on!) and I think it's THIS market SME aim at and bollocks to the home one, as it's shrunk to nearly nothing now except for a couple of posh dealers around and about...
I've got great sounds from an SME V and when it was double the price of an Ittok and the 309 slightly cheaper (than the Ittok), it didn't seem outrageous, as it was a lovely thing to behold and use. It sounded great with a Kiseki Agat Ruby a pal bought. For most people, a 309 is ample and I'd have loved one...
Rudi, you like nice things and gadgets it appears. the cars you post about will plummet in value after a year or three, but the SME will hold it's price rather well I reckon if you keep the box, bits and bobs and don't mangle the fine finish.
I just think your SME has the wrong cartridge and is on a deck not fully able to exploit it (my opinion not anyone elses). It's going to cost you a lot of dosh to possibly put it to rights and as you don't use it anyway, i'd suggest leaving it as an appreciating asset. The recent SME take-over has distributors now in the loop and prices have rocketed yet again, so older samples in great nick will appreciate accordingly I reckon...

Biggest hifi mistake: joining hifi forums.

Biggest hifi mistake: joining hifi forums. The opposite for me. Joined forums, started going to bake-offs, eyes were opened. Believing what the magazines, manufacturers and the dealers say, now that's a hi-fi mistake.

My biggest Hi-Fi mistake was not earning that extra ten grand a year to cover the bits I lusted after.

I don't know. Poverty during the 80s and 90s prevented me from making all sorts of expensive Linn/Naim type mistakes.

I had a pair of Rega Kyte loudspeakers which were the probably the biggest error I have made, they sounded utterly crap in every way. Far far too top heavy and just didn't work at all.

I had a pair and they didn’t really offend me tbh. Ultimately not really good enough even for a second system though. I felt the tweeter was a bit crude and they didn’t really have a lot of bass. Not a patch on any Ackroyd box of a similar size so I could t see the point of them.

Yeah agree with that, the bass was so light in comparison to my previous Wharfedale Diamond II loudspeakers, but they also had ear splitting treble which made them almost unbareable.
To be fair though, I bought them blind after seeing rave reviews, so it was my own fault ultimately.
I ended up going back to the Wharfedale's.

Not surprised with that, Paul. I've had early Ela's fitted with Royd Drivers. Too bright on CD. But fairly good on vinyl.

I'm selling off the bulk of my Hi-Fi. Is that going to be a mistake?
