The seller - Joe Henry - has a very good reputation. Apparently his builds are world class and any rare issues sorted out very well. He does various other designs as well - Nelson Pass etc.

This is a good build, certainly more in line with what I look for. Proper Bridge rectifiers, nice layout, good TXs, big caps.... Very nice. stevew Got your name on it 😉

My 686 was built by him. It's really well put together.

I was in contact with Joe about a bespoke build of a 686, before I bought Oliver's. He was very helpful and happy to complete an amplifier to any spec wanted, for the right money of course!

Out of curiosity… what’s the difference in terms of sound between a 286 and a 686?

Not a lot, distortion figures are almost identical (286 a smidge lower).
The 686 has more grunt so can sound more at ease, depending on the speaker, but there's not a lot in it.
That's a good price, my 286 cost me about £1200 once converted to dual mono, but these have good linear powers supplies.

The 686 is bridged. The 286 isnt, afaik.
If you look at the distortion graphs, they suggest the 286 has more distortion overall, again...iirc

200+ vs 80 Watts, better specs on the 686 too, just a smidge in terms of thd noise etc.

I took my 686 to Lurch's BO yesterday and it got used in various configurations. Pleasing that it stood up well compared to the other fine stuff being played - Nords, ARC, WAD and more.
It is amazing how the Neurochrome just lets upstream stuff through in a totally transparent and relaxed unforced manner. Was using mine with a 6SN7 valve pre up to yesterday, changed over to a SS Bladelius Advantage pre (which I picked up yesterday at the BO). Feels like a totally different system. It's gonna take me a while to get use to an all solid state system.

Was good to meet you Sunday Edward, and yes the 686 certainly held its own in my main system (never heard it in the playroom system). To me it was very much a case of different as opposed to better (Nord Vs 686) and I could live with either. The Nords for me had more bass heft and were a cleaner sound, whilst the 686 had more snap and speed with a slighter warmer presentation.

Then we've they have more the price goes back down. It's no longer for sale @ £1950 it has been removed, I bet when they reappear it'll be back at the right price. OR it was mispriced at £1300 👍

I'd accept It may have been advertised at the wrong price, but a little note at the top of the eBay ad to declare a typo would have been a simple way to demonstrate that you aren't actually trying to make an extra £600 due to boards being out of stock.
However, £600 is a long way out for a miscalculation IMO.

Yes interesting observations you make on the 686 vs the Nords. Certainly more snap/speed as we discussed with Steve. But I thought your Nords had a warmer presentation. But perhaps I needed to have spent more time with your Nords. I see Jessica did not rate the 686 much. Loved your ML stats! I kept thinking how my CEO would react if I imposed that in our living space.

Wow, so Ian917's sale of his 686 is the bargain of the year. Effectively brand new.
