The click between tracks is annoying. Could you try setting up the Aria again connected to the Parasound, might sound strange but I've got a problem with my Auralic, I set it up with the connection to the dac using the rca output to bnc but have wanted to try a different cable which is rca to rca, and even though I am using the same output socket I get no sound!!! Yeah, I can try something else cable wise, but it will change the sound. A bit annoying. Shame about the Aurelic. There are often little oddities like this though.

It will do 24/88 as well thre is a reason for this Marvellous....... Do i have to guess? Some dac PCM 63 configurations impliment by the manufacturers are limited to direct multiples of 44.1Khz as the 63 & 1702's are 8 times red book whch is 352.8Khz direct multiples of the fundemntal (although they can achieve 705.6Khz) these are not direct multiples of 48Khz so from memeory to achieve the desired 24/96 you may need a 24/192 DIR this wwill allow upto 176.4Khz for 192 you may require a 384Khz DIR

The click between tracks… just a complete guess, but are you still using the Mutec? Just wondering if it’s similar to that delay you get when you switch between tracks. Of course that doesn’t happen on the same album tracks.. so it shouldn’t happen. Probably complete bollox.. but was just pondering

Oli You will need a scope (ideally 4 channels) to check the frequency and error flags on the following pins (after checking basic ANG + DNG ground and supply rails first 5Vdc on pins 7 & 22, for the grounds (0Vdc) 8 & 21 shpuld be 0.2 ohms or less) reporting pins on the 8414 chip. This is pin 25, this will indicate whether or not the chip has registared any error reporting (Partity/slipped sampls/bi-phase reversed etc) . Also check the master clock on pin 19 this should clock frequency (what ever clock frequency is used to drive this part of the chip from your dac design) be a constant reguardless of any incoming data streams or not. You can also set up another channel on the scope to view to incoming serial data (pin 12 on channel one and output data on pin 26 even a pretty basic 100Mhz scope will show you any obvious discrepanices. Also nice to keep an eye on the masterclock pin 19 as well channel three (Alan can help out here) Next you Incoming data frame sync (word) serial data (audio) and address bit (bit clock) against any gitches that corrilate to the pops, this can be checked by viewing pin 25' current address state.

That percentile of transparency and resolution I'd missed is now here, and it has not come at the expense of plausibility. It hasn't affected the tibral quality I have fallen for, and it has not affected the tonal quality. It's just more resolving, more transparent. The bass in particular, wow. It has weight, heft and layering but with the addition of some inner details like touch and technique. It's a little more agile, more nimble, but it has not lost the core ingredients to sounding like an accurate representation. The Cello of Janos still delivers emotion, flair, momentum and fluidity, but again, to hear the movement of the left hand on the neck, to hear him breathing whilst playing.....this is what I wanted. The insight.....this is what I hoped for. Every track, absolutely improved beyond the significance of £150........ This evening's session with the Parasound has been one of absolute joy. I can't recall ever being so enthralled by digital replay. These words specifically are very encouraging mate. There's life in some old dogs (and chips) yet it seems. Super stuff.

Since I discovered the Old but Gold DAC route, I've had a fair few of varying ability through my system. They usually sound more Plausible than recent DACs, but of significantly varying transparency and rez etc. So I'm not at all surprised about the improvements to be had from the type of mod you've done, Oli. Having said that, I do find that the transparency rez thing is of far less importance to me now. One of the most musically enjoyable DACs I've used is also the least transparent; Lexicon MC1 'digital processor' from over 20 years ago. I used to be "I want to hear everything that's on the recording", now it's more "I want to be at the concert". In my view, there is often a lot more on a recording than you'd actually hear at a live concert. So a moderate diminution of the transparency rez thing actually takes me closer to the live event. Controversial?

Controversial? Not in the slightest. No really, I couldn't agree more. The main thing I've been chasing is having that low level energy that can only be created by a live drum-kit or bass guitar in the room with me. It's a difficult balance between not over-loading the room with energy/boominess and getting the depth and reach of the bass elements with enough 'overhang' to recreate a concert-like environment with natural reverb. Multiple subs are imperative for this I've found. It's certainly possible though to some degree, obviously you can't emulate a big hall with 2000+ people and Marshall stacks playing into a 10,000w PA THAT accurately . . . .

Not yet. I have to get into the streamer settings to do that.

I'm a few days Into the Parasound in its new audiotuning "Level 1" upgrade set up.
Originally I felt a great surge of relief as the DAC started to show a little more resolution and transparency pretty immediately. That then subsided a little as I realised what I was hearing now had a kind of exaggerated size in the soundstage. I left the DAC on and playing for a day or two, and now we have things sounding a lot more normal.
I am not sure if something needed to settle down, or burn in, but the clicking between tracks stopped, the soundstage focussed up and the transparency and resolution have only Improved since that first listen.
My library is Also now mainly 16/44 thanks to some jiggery pokery in the streamer. I do not have 24/88 capabilities either. Checked that today, but 24/48 does work without issue, so whilst it's not quite up to modern day specs, it is a bit better than standard.
However, listening to the DAC has been the biggest reward. I'd been listening to "The Popular Duke Ellington" 24/96 version via the Soekris on a regular basis. It's clarity and transparency made tracks like "The Mooche" incredibly addictive.
From memory, listening to that today in 16/44 did not take anything away from it. The Parasound delivering levels very close to what I remember. It's a really engaging listen and to be honest, it could be my overall favourite DAC of all time.
Quite the statement, but I'm yet to find something it can't do that feels significant. And I have listened to a lot of music in the last week or so. As stated before, there may be DACs that do better in specific areas, but overall....this one is hard to beat. So much so that I am going to set about it with a soldering iron.
Black gates and power supply lyrics are coming out first. They will be replaced with Panasonic FM and Kemet SF respectively.
I'll then give that some burn in time and see what happens. Then I'll attack something else.
The plan is to recap the entire PCB eventually.

First post. I would like to get 24/96 from my vintage Parasound D/AC 1100 with the Burr-Brown PCM63P-J. If you judge your electronics by their weight, the Parasound is a keeper. Thanks to Oliver for an earlier PM. With the audiotuning.de two chip upgrade package that Bigman80 used, you can get 24/96 with a mod. Per audiotuning.de: "the digital invert IC107 has to be removed and the digital filter outputs 23+24 has to be connected direct to the input of the DACS, that's all." From Rudi at www.head-fi.org/showcase/parasound-d-ac-1100.14166/reviews, he wrote: "After some surgical intervention that involves completely amputating the MOSFET output buffer I finally may have tapped into what this DAC has to offer. Also I realized how foolish it was of Parasound engineers to use the previous buffering solution. After installing the OPA134 with a BUF634 in the feedback loop the DAC came alive with improved soundstage, more controlled bass (the bass with the MOSFET buffer was pretty flabby and exaggerated)." I am planning on the audiotuning.de upgrade with 24/96 mod. Questions: 1) Can I do Rudi's head-fi.org mod in addition to the audiotuning.de? I would think yes, however real expertise and advice is needed. 2) Is Rudi's mod difficult or easy? I can do most mods, as long it is explained in simple terms with pictures, think of painting by numbers. Any thoughts on Rudi's mod? The audiotuning.de has already been discussed. Thanks, Joseph

Hi Joseph, Welcome to the forum! I'm not going to be much help here, but we have the UKs premier digital specialist at hand. Maybe misterc could offer an insight?
