Decided to put the JM Labs back in after a few weeks living with the Audiovectors. Took the opportunity to re=position a bit from how I had them before, wider apart and with the speaker on the right further from the wall. Kept the Linn LK100 in as the power amp and the DAC feeds it directly. On the whole this is a great combination, still maybe a little soft on transient attack although it's no longer too soft, although not sure what has improved that as I'm sure I tried this combo before and was disappointed. But nothing else can be faulted. Pretty sure that when I get the Krell KSA50S back in I'll be back to killer levels of sound quality. The whole front end has had a massive upgrade (on paper at least) since it was last in so hoping for great things.

They both have a character but it's a very different character. I don't think there is any question that on the whole I prefer the JM Lab. They really open the recording up and disappear, and the little low level cues in the recording are more obvious and set in more space. On the flip side they are not as crisp and precise sounding as the Audiovectors.
Objectively and subjectively-speaking the JM Lab are the superior speaker, but then they are 3 times the price so you'd hope so.
I wouldn't complain much if I was stuck on a desert island with just the Audiovectors though. Was never in hurry to swap them back out.

Of the two brands I would be in agreement with Martin, still have a soft spot for Focal's in the right system they can deliver seriously goods sounds, still have a couple of pairs

You can't see it in the pic but the JM Labs have little rubberised feet about half an inch in height under them. The centre of them is a thread that lets you add the optional spikes (which I've never tried). So the cabs don't actually touch the carpet. In any case below the carpet and underlay the floor is a concrete slab. As it happens though I did earlier order some more washing machine feet (£6 for four) and will experiment with them when they arrive. Have found before though that with a concrete slab floor these things make a lot less difference than they do on suspended wooden floors where pretty much everything tried makes some obvious change to the sound.

That's some serious speakerage to just have lying around. I can provide you with some free storage for the 1037 or the Scala 2 if you need it

Listened to about 10 albums last night, system is very close to perfection, just that bit of softness although that is no longer so bad it ruins it for me but is still there.
Pretty sure that is the amplification, maybe the DAC contributes some as a few reviewers have remarked that it sounds just a little soft in comparison to others. One was not sure if that was real or imagined so it is slight. But I've always had that issue as far back as I can recall, only when using the Krell 50S did it vanish completely. But I've never tried the 50S with this DAC.
Been avoiding it but think I am going to have to get another DAC to cross-compare.
Am open to suggestions, can be new or second hand, must have variable digital volume control, must have internal power supply, ideally for £200 or less.

If I were to be totally honest, I think you need to get that Krell KSA50s back in the system. You may spend £200 to fix something that becomes a non-issue when it goes back in? I'd be willing to loan you the Soekris once you have the KSA 50s back in as I don't think there's much point until your system is back to how it was when I heard it. Maybe drop Alan a message and see if he fancies a couple of beer tokens to drop it in while the roads are completely congestion free. They are so clear at the minute that it makes sense.

I can go and get it as my mate's car is back on the road but wasn't going to bother Alan over xmas/new year. You're probably right and putting that Krell back in will certainly be an improvement as it's just a better amp than all my others, but I'm still intrigued as to whether a different DAC will actually sound different i.e not have that slight softness. Could be the amplifier but has to be the same with all my amplifiers as tried them all (except the old Harmon Kardon). Add to that two reviewers and one owner that I have seen said the same thing (the owner said it was 'dark' sounding which I interpret as similar) it makes you think. I quite like to know the answer for sure.

From what you have said, I assume Alan (Firebottle) has got your Krell, then I'd take your dac round and ask if you could compare with his Topping D9o for 5 minutes, I know you like plenty of time to compare but a short listen would give you an idea

You'll think I'm off my rocker if I tell you and you may well be right so going to wait until I've had a go on it and then at least I'll be ready for the 'told you so' stuff.
I give you a clue - it's an integrated amp (but pre-power can be split) came out in 2003 from a mass market brand, can be bought used very cheaply, the power amp section measures very well indeed, not quite top tier but close. I've never owned anything from this manufacturer before.
