Hi all, I am advertising for sale a pair of brand new and unused PCBs. I bought them around two weeks ago, but my plans might have changed....I am letting fate decide what I should do next. Build the 686 or try something else. They cost £949 and a bit of change to get them here and Into the country, so I will offer them out at the exact same price, and throw in UK delivery for free. IF the PCBs sell before the casework, transformers, and other bits arrive, I'll take it as a sign that I should try something else. If they do not, I will build the 686 I had planned to make. Just a word to the wise, Tom reckons when his last remaining pairs of 686 PCBs sell, there will be no more until at least September as the global chip shortage means he cannot get them. This may be a big mistake in my part, but like I said....fate. That's it.....it's in the hands of the HiFi gods now. I'll post pictures of the actual PCBs tomorrow.

Do you have a 686 now?
I don’t think so, as you posted recently. You have not changed your amp for 3 months.

To be fair, I don't count 'stand-in' or more appropriately named 'rebound' amps (becasue they come in and satisfy your immediate needs for amplification after losing a long term 'keeper' . . . . )
I'd have lost count otherwise . . . .
Case in point, I'm currently awaiting delivery (hopefully today) of an amplifier I'm using in combination with another amplifier, both to be used on a temporary basis as I await completion of upgrades to my new/old potential long-term non stand-in amplifier.
If most people really knew this about me, the white coats would not be far away . . . .

My amp history is fairly simple.
Kenwood KA-3020SE - My first amp Arcam Alpha 8R and 8P - I started with the 8R and added the 8P a few years after, when I tried bi-amping. As was the fashion back then. Arcam Alpha 10P was added later, replacing the 8P for bass duties. I still have the Arcam stuff in the house. Would make a nice 2nd system. Graham Slee Proprius - pretty good amps. (I still have a pair in the house, although they are not mine). Firebottle Air Firebottle Mono Modulus -86 Modulus 686
I can’t see me selling the 686. It is very good, so if you are interested in one, take Oli up on this offer. If not, you could be waiting a very long time. I may add a different flavour of amp at a later date, possibly valve based, but that is way down the list of priorities.

had a count up the other day and I've owned at least forty integrated and power amps. Probably more as when I was buying and selling in the early 90s I had loads of them coming through and I've probably forgotten some of them.

I'll go to the other extreme. Two in thirty years: Classe Model Seventy, Modulus 686.

Both decent too. That's probably where I was going wrong...
The only amps I had I regret selling were two huge Trio integrateds that had come out of a dance hall. Hammarite style finish, one green and one blue.
Got those off a builder who was pulling the place down, or converting it. Got a lot of kit from builders as they would go into these places and all the equipment would just be left in there abandoned, none of it had much value in those days. I probably sold those Trios for sixty quid each, be worth a few hundred now at least.

In that case, I have had two amplifiers. All the others were stand in amplifiers.

Eyes up his 486 and the new modushop monoblock 4u chassis.... Hahaha, I wondered whether they would interest you. Flogging your 486 would probably cover most of the build cost i'd have thought?

Probably not even close, 2k for my monos, cosv you know, monos, soft start, 400va 88,000uf a side. I reckon those new cases will be 900 landed, 1k for boards, 300 for 2x 500va supreme traffos, 300 for psu boards, 100 for soft start, 50 for connectors. Gonna be 2.5k at least before fancy front panel cnc and all for and extra 80 Watts and ability to drive 2ohm rather than 3ohm. I could do though... if only current amps weren't such a perfect fit in my rack....

Is an “ish watt” bigger or smaller than a normal one, as people keep telling me, all Watts are not the same.

Well, things have well and truly gone to Sh#t.
I paid £200ish for the aluminum chassis and the seller sent it. It got rejected by the airline and was sent back.
He's signed to say it came back.
I contacted him and he said he'd send it again....which he did. It got to the airline and they refused it again.
He said he'll refund me, but hasn't and now AliExpress are playing F#ck about over the refund.
Apparently you have to wait until 70 days.....
For what, I have no idea.
However, I had expected the 686 case to be here by now and to also be planning the build and completing it ready for the Audio addicts bake off. This being ready is now a serious doubt.
Well pissed off.

why are they returning it? Can't see it being a safety issue. Is he screwing up the paperwork?

They returned another of my items too, but that's now been resent and is tracking. No idea what's happened but it suggests some sort of rule change that they haven't adhered to. Other than that I am stumped.

Simple stuf has got complicated and uncertain now, they know it's not a bomb, what on earth could the issue be and if there is one simple procedure has to be let the customer know why. Maybe it's me and logical, common sense stuf shouldn't be hard and not standard
