But I question the best “bang for buck is an SP10, period….” I think we're likely gonna go round and round and round..... Name any proper high end tt, what would it cost ? then look at the SP10 MK2. Yes they may have gone up a little lately but still...up until not too long ago, Mk2's could be picked up for under £1k, plenty. A MK2 sold October end, for £836 after 16 bids, with tonearm and plinth. States, Re-capped and professionally renovated etc etc - Seen loads go for this type of money. Used to be a regular comment and observation on AOS regarding the SP10 Mk2 ie: 'bang for buck', when I was about, not that long ago.

Kevin, it appears you may be thinking of diminishing returns, one mans great 'bang for your buck' may not equal someone else's. I'm sure your tt is great for the money you have spent, and like as been said, it would better many tt's at double and triple the cost, but to get improvements Robbie and Bigman are talking about you need to go to the next model up, actually reminds me of a certain amplifier.

No, I am thinking of the cost vs the improved wow and flutter. The SL1200 is good, and I very much doubt I can hear the difference in performance, using the same arm and cartridge.

The SL1200 has a wow and flutter measurement of 0.025% according to the specs. The SP10 Mk2 has a wow and flutter measurement of 0.025% according to the specs.
What does that €4.5k get me?

Agree it is not 4.5K of improvement. What's the wow and flutter on a £40 DVD player? - 0% Sort of puts it all in perspective.

This discussion reminds me of when I tried the latest and greatest platter for the 1210 costing about £1K roughly 10 years ago. I'd been using (and still own), the mike new steel and copper platter. I can remember that the new platter slightly edged my older platter, but not by £1K! I recieved a proper roasting claiming I must be deaf, the newer platter was leaps ahead of the rubbish I was using etc etc. In the end I came to the conclusion that what matters is how I feel when I listen to the music. I do watch the pennies and I'm more than happy to splash to cash when the right piece of kit drops my way.

It might be that my simplistic view is wrong, but as I have a high quality bearing (sapphire thrust plate/cermic bearing, running in PTFE bushes) and a good platter, the wow and flutter is suitably low that I don't need to worry about upgrading the deck, as long as it still works. My FX1200 is good enough, (especially with the Houdini) that I have given up about searching for a new TT.

I agree, the bit of gear that makes you 'give up' searching for any gear to replace it with, is THE one. Only bit of kit I've experienced that with so far is my 686 amplifier. My Logan's could well also be cementing their place in that category . . . . but I've thought that about the Quads . . . .

Out of interest, what have you guys done about the SP10 bearing? It looks to be a similar material to the SL1200, which being honest, is not great.
I assume it is not left standard?

Good, you've got a great tt, why change now, it is certainly not the weak link in your system.

Forgot what he did to be honest. Last time I asked, an SP10 off Angus was about £1500....I think that may have been in a plinth too. All electronics checked and updated with modern components and the bearing sorted too. Great service.

Compared to the prices I have seen recently, it does look like a bargain.

Compared to the prices I have seen recently, it does look like a bargain. Yeah, I sometimes forget that I don't shop in "normal" avenues, which skews my perception on pricing a little bit. However, it's not an exclusive avenue that I'm in. It's available to anyone, you just have to know where to look.
