And on audio forums, it's the 'tat' that often gets sold quickly on and the decent stuff kept for far longer in my experience over the years. I mean, some of the gear that gets hyped up when it's really not good amazed me when I was a regular on AOS in the past...
We had a second hand dealer nearby in the 80's and 90's and the amount of 'Top End' gear they carried that once cost a fortune and lost humungous amounts in a couple of years often ended up there at much more sensible prices. What ended up happening was that someone would buy the item there, use it for a few weeks or months and then trade it back for the next item, the stock actually rotating round a couple of dozen people over a few years. My ARC SP14 ended up this way, the chap I sold it to using it (and it sounded good at his place too) for a couple of months and then chopping it in for the next big thing - I lost touch after that so no idea what he had since...

There’s another element in this too: Sometimes you buy things you know you really can’t afford to hang onto. Nice to own though. I suspect quite a bit of high end stuff gets sold on due to this. I have certainly done it in my time. I have a price in my head that I expect to have permanently invested in my hifi. I am happy to exceed it regularly to try more expensive stuff, but it’s rare that I keep the items, because I know there’s is money tied up in them. Selling rarely has anything to do with sound, it’s simply going back to baseline. The Leben amp will likely fit this bill when I try it. I will take pleasure from the fact that I owned it, but it’s unlikely I will tie big money up in an amp for the long term.

I just couldn't do that you see... I had the ARC SP14 and loved it. I changed to the Croft 4PP and built by Glenn with gold phono sockets especially for me, purely because the latter sounded as good and was half the price, although it didn't look as good obviously. My second Croft didn't do it quite the same, or maybe I'd moved on, I don't know...
The only thing that really comes to mind that I got shot of pretty quickly and didn't miss were a pair of Snell E II's. In a large room onlow 'Pirate' stands and driven by a pair of AI First Audio mono#s, they sounded fine, but in my small room, the edge at the top of the bass unit's range (or the bottom of the tweeter's...) was very annoying and the bass out of control for me. They'd gone within a fortnight! Another speaker I didn't gel with was a set of Rega Alya's I had. Dad used them, again in a large room, as replacements for the HB2's which had lost the foam grilles and looked Sh#t, and in his room and being as he was happy to lift the bass a touch, they sounded fine. After he'd passed, I got them home with my 'proper' HiFi and all the bass disappeared.
I was lucky as said before. I had a playground 'at work' where I could play and 'home' was where I listened for myself...

I wonder what you have done if you didn’t have the playground at work. Do you think you’d ever have been a box swapper, Dave?

No idea. I tend to hoard rather than swap about - I seem to like to get to know the gear I use.
