I recently had a colleague come round and listen to my system, which is the first time that I have had a HiFi visitor since Pinky came to stay… Anyway, we listened to some vinyl, and he was impressed. We got to digital, and we streamed Lou Rawl, the shadow of your smile. He was listening for the sound of an ice cube falling in a glass during the spoken intro, which we could hear, but it was not obvious. Apparently in his system, this is easily heard. So the question is, if you stream this track, is it blatantly obvious, and is my system just Sh#t?

I can hear it, but apparently it should be very evident. I am using Amazon Music to stream.

Ok, just tried it via Tidal on a Samsung S10, using JBL earpod things. It's very clear. Can hear the ice cube land and then roll about briefly. Will try on the system later.

@cageyh
Looking at your pals system list, i suspect your Pre may be slightly...possibly lagging behind now.
Having never heard your Triangles, i am not sure what they are capable of. My previous experience of High Class JBLs was a moistening occaison, so it could be that?
Your 686 is better than any amplifier he owns in terms of measured performance, and the DAC is better than the one in the Goldmund on spec.

Have you still got the Alps Blue in your Kin Kevin?
If you have that's the bottleneck.

I think the thing to acknowledge is that there is a great sounding preamp in your system, and one that for the price they were sold for is stupendous in quality. The 686 is capable, REALLY capable. IME, the key to uncovering all that capability is coupling it with a preamp that is equally as capable.

I still like it. I can live with the very slight “muffling” of an ice cube, that is probably not supposed to be in the recording anyway.

I think if i were you, i would get that Alps Blue out as a matter of urgency. I know it made a huge difference in Alans and another fella's who i heard. The Alps blue will be more to blame than the preamp itself. Wheter it's supposed to be there or not, that ice cube will play on your mind. I'd be doing my nut. If you can live without remote, i can get you what is probably the best stepped attenuator out there. Just let me know.

Ok, just realised that I have the sound quality setting on "Normal" for Tidal on my phone. Apparently due to trying to save data. Not on my watch!!! I've just set it to "HiFi" and there's another ice cube at 54 seconds. Very clear and kind of jumps off the page. Take another listen.

I agree with Oliver, I had an Alps blue in my Neurochrome headphone amp, swapped it out and the level of detail retrieval, air and dynamics improved markedly. Relatively cheap to realise its full potential.

Convenience and all that….

I could try bypassing the pre entirely, and feed the DAC directly to the 686 to see if it makes a big enough difference to worry about…

The remote version of the Phonomac attenuator is astronmical due to the bloody motor assembly. It's actuall cheaper to hire a man servant for every session!

Those JBL Arraus are very good. I've tried to buy some twice but both times I was too late, they sold in hours.

I would definitely give removing the pre from the system a go, many prefer to do this. I don't think your speakers are to blame having heard Triangles before, although maybe not your model.
