I can hear them both, although mine is at 53 seconds.  I could try bypassing the pre entirely, and feed the DAC directly to the 686 to see if it makes a big enough difference to worry about… Can everyone play this link because I can't  🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 |

Just played it on the system and its earcathing both times, but I suspect those JBLs of your mates are likely to be why it really stands out in his system.
It's not jumping off the page or anything like that, just sort of catches the ear as something that shouldn't be there.
Great track though, and I spent most of last night exploring his back catalogue as I'd never heard of him.
I'm now mildly addicted lol

Great recommendation for testing the system, let alone a great track.
Had a few moments of panic when I couldn’t really hear it on my system.
So played it through my mojo/poly/oppo headphones where it jumps out.. can tell that the glass is empty when the ice is dropped in!
Went back to my main system and realised something else.. playing the anthology though Qobuz is that it’s quite a bit quieter than most streams. So, cranking up the volume I can certainly hear it, but not jumping out. Interesting
Like Oliver, am going though various tracks. Tobacco Road is awesome.

I'll have been listening to "Live" and been thoroughly enjoying it. |

Okay I found this version on Youtube. One of my favourite torch songs although I prefer Sinatra's version on 'Live At The Sands.'
regret to say that both ice cubes are obvious even on Youtube through my laptop speakers, the 53 second one especially so. So this is not a test of transparency unless my laptop's sound system is something special (it isn't). Volume was not high.
As a stab in the dark I'd suggest Kevin's speaker/room combo might have a suck-out at the precise frequency of the cube hitting the glass. Impossible to say for certain without further investigation/information.

Try Neil Young 'Tonight's The Night' and see if you can hear him bashing into the mic stand (he does it a couple of times).
That's probably not a great test either but I read about it long before I heard it for myself despite having the album for 30 odd years.
