is there a plan b oli? keep the yamaha's or start a fresh? Sorry Jamie, missed your post. I think at the moment i am just going to hang fire for a bit. I am not sure i can be arsed with the XO upgrade on the yams atm as I have so much going on. I still have my own system to build properly. Half of it isnt even in a box of any sort and if it is i haven't got the lid on it or there are screws missing etc. I havent built my Avalon BT2 yet (BT2 preamp with Angus's Avalon phonostage inside) I need to build a nother Stepped Attenuator for the loan unit i have said a couple of people can try, Then there is the new phonostage in development with Alan and Craig, which is going to be a pricey build. I need to do the LPSU for the DAC I have speaker cables to make and try, and then there are all the BB3's waiting to be built. If the XO parts came, they would just sit in the box for months so i will wait and see what pops up. I *may* have a line on a pair of Heco's but wont know until the end of the month, and i am still watching for pairs of Quadral Orkan VIII's that may be possible to get over here. The Yams are not a problem in my system in any way, but there is an itch to get the Heco's in. I really loved what they did. sounds like a good move,i think i'd do the same.

Good luck with the project. I am contemplating getting a new rack to fit everything open when my BB3 is finished.... I could make space by putting the 686 on the bottom shelf, but that means I have to bend over more. I have two shelves I am not using. I am almost tempted to put the cassette deck, and FM tuner in the rack, but it will be a tight squeeze, and French radio is crap. Any news on Amazon?

Have I missed something, I thought these Heco's had already been purchased?

Have I missed something, I thought these Heco's had already been purchased? They had, but the seller refused to send them as eBay had removed the German VAT from his listing. Rightly so as it wasn't due. He claimed he used it to subsidize the postage. He wanted another €400. I said no.

Sorry about that Oli, I was looking forward to how 'we' were going to sort that room of yours out.

Am I right in saying that you have only heard these Hecos at Jim's place, in a completely different room and system to your own?
What did they do in his set up that the Yamahas don't do in yours? Maybe if we can narrow down that factor - or factors - then alternatives can be suggested?

Angus has the same TT and arm. Only the cart was different but it's well known to me. Different room though, obviously. What do they do that the Yams don't... The Heco's have better resolution. They were sharper, more incisive. The yams are a little softer on the edges. Bass was tighter, faster. Sounded a little more vibrant. These things were very small differences, but as I always say, once heard you cannot unhear. I thought the Heco's were better than the Mordaunt Short Performance 880's, and i loved the 880's.

Sorry about that Oli, I was looking forward to how 'we' were going to sort that room of yours out. Cheers Dave. There will be a development at some point I'm sure. As I say, I may have a line on a pair that may be available at the end of the month but I won't know until then. I'm in no rush. As I've said, the Yams are a cracking speaker and they haven't really put a foot wrong since being here. If nothing comes up then I'll happily stick with them and maybe attack the XOs at a later date

so leaving aside that it was a different cartridge, which alone will make a significant difference, you've also got the following variables:
1) Turntable support - was this identical between the two systems? 2) Location of the turntable relative to the room boundaries and the speakers. 3) overall acoustics of the room
These will all impact the sound of vinyl due to the cartridge picking up the reverb. Did you also compare using a digital source? Far less variables even if it is completely different digital source.
Are the caps on the Yamahas the originals? If so I'd just swap them out, leave the rest as it is, and see where you are then.
On paper, and leaving bass extension out of it, the Yamahas should be the superior speaker.

All fair points, and in an attempt to see the difference between the two carts, a little session has been arranged for this coming week. What makes you say the Yams are the superior speaker?

I did say 'on paper', personal preference is a whole different matter.
The Yams have much better tweeters and midrange drivers, they have much lower distortion than pretty much anything else available now or then.
I think the Heco are fantastic for the money though, some serious engineering skills involved to get that performance at the price.
