I reckon you just need to clean your ears mate. Amazing what a cotton bud upgrade can do...😉 Hope the yammies work for you. You've got to be joking? He's got the ears of a Grand Master Bat anyway. Always a good thing when testing designs btw.

Change of speaker terminals etc ''But need a bit of therapy to be able to use them. '' Hahaha.... I thought you were talking about yourself there Oli

Change of speaker terminals etc Nah, stick 'em on a couple of chairs, shove some 79 strand in the back, put on 'Live And Dangerous' and you'll soon know if they are for you Not sure you will be too keen on those KEFs. They are a good small speaker but they sound like a small speaker. Mind you I only had a quick listen to them so could be mistaken.

No, I don't think the LS50 will "better" the Yammies, but I am listening to the KEF Q1's and they are imaging like Wizards, just like the Quadrals. That's got to be down to the size and shape of the speaker. I am liking the signature sound of the KEF Q1's so it makes sense to try a much, much better pair. I am not sure I want to lose that, especially now I have found it with smaller speakers. I am still collecting the Yammies Sunday, but these are now my fall back speakers if the Yammies don't work. If they do, the KEFs can go

John Atkinson - Stereophile rates the LS50 very highly indeed and uses them as his daily runner so that says something?
I have heard them do some amazing things under controlled circumstances.

The LS50s image superbly and throw a nice soundstage but the Yammies have more prescense. I totally expect that, but will they image anywhere nearly as well as the KEFs? I strongly doubt that. It's become quite important to me actually. The little KefQ1 are giving a little glimpse into some really good imaging. I know the Yammies are going to boss it with presence, slam etc, but transparency and clarity...who's gonna take a punt on picking a winner in that area? I have no idea, so this is gonna be an interesting comparison. What has happened here with the Quadral and the KefQ1 is they have demonstrated that it's better to have 80-90% of the performance of a smaller speaker than 40-50% of a bigger speaker. I got a gut feeling when I saw them that THEY should be auditioned. They have not crossedy mind before today. Strange ay!

In truth, i don't think you're wrong, Macca. I just had a huge wave of concern that the Yams may be too big and i'd be stuck being miserable. The LS50 were an example of hedging your bets. I know how good Yams can be, so i am really eager to get them going but again, i have a bit to do with them first so the KEF's are going to get some good listening hours in whilst i do what i think is absolutely necessary. New binding posts, new wiring and i may remove the Lpads from the chain. I know they can be helpful in tweaking, but i am repulsed by the idea of a pot in the signal chain. That may be a little OTT but still, why stuff it full of glorious Spotfire wire and then nobble it with trim pots. Actually i may leave them in place initially.

I was going to suggest the LS50, but the later model as they are apparently better. However, I was really not sure you woukd go for something like that.

Yes, I read the later ones were probably getting a bit more "development" as they were released but the white papers suggest it's only minimal. I'd have listened, as I have to everyone whose suggestions have been offered

I had KEF R500 in a 2nd system getting occasional use for over a year. They had a later version of the Uni-Q driver plus a couple of 5 (?) inch cone bass drivers symmetrically around it.
I never did grow to like them even though I thought I would. A thin sound lacking realistic tonal weight. Quite good for pacey music, in short doses as far as I was concerned, although folks with tastes in electronic or rock music would likely go for them a lot more than I did. Nicely focused imaging, though.

I think it's just me. I was at the Bristol show the year the LS50 came out - the KEF room was packed with excited punters uttering goshes and wows. I thought 'meh, wtf is the fuss about?'.

That happens sometimes....I have no expectations and they will get a thorough workout, so I'll report back on my feeling towards them

To be honest I think its really difficult for anyone to make a reasonable evaluation of any equipment at those shows apart form an opinion on the kits physical appearance?

I had the LS50 at my house and I was non plussed, the SP2s were far better. But I have heard it driven in anger in a dedicated music room and it was awesome!

Yes, you may be right but other reports suggest they are bass light. It's all in the ear of the listener I suppose.

Most reviews that I read said they had no real emphasis to any part of the sound range, giving a clean/natural response. They are pricey though. They cost more than I got my Antal EZ for.
I do like KEF speakers though.
