Hi all,
Ok, I need help. I have sibilance issues on a vast number of LPs, that wasn't there before.
I took the SP10 down to Angus for a checkup and the alignment of the cart had drifted a little. Angus sorted that all out and I went home confident of it being solved, however it is not.
I have rechecked the setup, played with the Azimuth and I am very confident that everything is spot on, yet the sibilance remains unchecked
I am loathed to believe the cartridge (stylus) is already knackered as I only had it earlier this year. I do play a lot of vinyl, but c'mon... surely not.
Any suggestions before I try and find a cheap cartridge to see if it is the cart?

Have you adjusted anti-skate? One way to check is to disconnect one speaker at a time and adjust as necessary.
Another option is the loading plugs, if you use them.

just a thought but how long have you been using it with the stylus not following the arc,i think you said it was 1mm out as it got to the inner null. could this have buggered the record up? i always seem to find with this sort of thing that 9 times out of 10 it pays to go back to basics and re check everything is aligned properly however well i thought i'd set it up before.

No idea? Just checked everything again and like a Dick, didn't set the tracking weight when I got home.... obviously the vibrations on the way home shifted the C/W I have now redone the tracking weigh and Antiskate and there is a noticeable difference in Sibilance so that's a positive, even though it's not quite gone but I need to check the VTA again now

First off, make sure its not you. Ask the Mrs if she hears it too.
Try your dac, make sure its not the rest of your hifi.
Swap carts and play a brand new record. Makes sure its not the cart.
Now play one of the previously sibilant records with this other cart. To check if you've damaged records.
If all this is good, refit and re-setup the sibilant cart. If it comes back, carts knackered. It it doesnt, it was set up.
Id check your cart for crap on the coils again.

Sibilance should be there ! It's a natural content and is real . Listen to hymns in a church and the sibilance will astound you. So long as it's not overbearing just go with the flow. Without sibilance it would sound even more unrealistic. Messing with the cart won't touch it. In my not so modest opinion.

Yes, sibilance is natural, but over or under emphasis of it is not. And over emphasis can be amazingly irritating.
Surely Angus would have checked and if necessary reset the anti skating?
Did Angus hear the sibilance as well? Did you hear it at his place?

jandl100 We didn't have time to listen to it unfortunately as we were too busy with everything else. Were swapping the tonearm over for an up to date MK6 as mine had been left behind slightly in terms of little tweaks. Angus did indeed set up the arm etc, but somewhere between there and home (1.15hr drive) things must have moved. No drama, I know how to sort the setup out. @engine Yes, sibilance is there naturally but this is over emphasis. It's almost sounds like it's breaking up. I thought it may be inner groove distortion originally, hence the foray into getting the setup rechecked. I managed to dial a lot of the sibilance out with setup adjustment last night, but it's still not quite right. I'll do more today and I have emailed Kilian to prepare him for the cartridge to come in for a check up. I have a ruck of vinyl to open (Birthday stuff) tomorrow and listen too....typical the vinyl should be off colour for it. ☹️

I hope there is no issue with your cartridge. I would be gutted if there was, as you have not had it long.

A Houdini may help fix it.

Personally, I wouldn't play any new vinyl until I knew the cart was A1. Or any vinyl I hadn't played since the problem started.
Get the cartridge checked first.

How many hours do you reckon you have got on the cartridge?
They do go bad faster than you think. You see people who have had the same one for years but that's because they play like 1 album a week.
I'd easy go through a stylus in 6 months, less sometimes. Same as you, couldn't believe it when it starts going bad but then you do the maths and realise it's got 1000 hours plus on it.

TBH, it's quite possible that I have 1000 hours on it since new but I am not 100% on that. I do play a lot of vinyl and although my LPs are in good condition, I have spent an incredible amount of time listening to vinyl whilst building the BB3's and the preamps we were fine-tuning over the last 8 months or so. The HA103-SEL is going over to Holland for an inspection. Better to be sure IMO. In the meantime, I'm not known for my patience......... A quick trip to Birmingham has seen me return with this..

Thanks Jamie, Not sure what to do with it TBH...might flog it with the possibility of retip but definitely in needs an inspection.. May just be dirty rather than worn. Kilian is happy to have a look but I don't think I can be arsed messing about. At £300ish for the retip and maybe sold at £400, you'd still have an £1800 on your hands for about £700...seems like a good deal to me.

Ohh , very nice looking!
Btw one thing that attracted me to zyx is that they rate thier carts good for 2000 hours before needing a retip. This might be a bit optimistic, but I have never read anything online about them to the contrary or disputing it, unlike some other brands.

I had my eye on the predecessor of this cartridge, the Legacy, at the same time I sent me Kb off for a retip. Today it seemed the time was right to dive in.

A word of warning Oli, linn had issues with their Krystal cantilevers dissolving when wet cleaned. The Krystal was made by Goldring.
Id ask him before you wet clean the stylus.

Thanks Simon....I appreciate the heads up. However, Angus has put me onto something for cleaning the stylus which I will share details off once I have tried it.

I will share the thoughts I have in due course....no point diving in as it's not even got an hour on it yet lol Still fine-tuning the setup. 99% confident of what I have done so far, just Azimuth and VTA to double check. Tomorrow will be spent listening to some new pieces of Vinyl too.

Great to think outside the box. Looking forward to your impressions with the Goldring Oli, I am sure from what i have read about it, it will deliver a stellar performance!
