My search for ECC83s is now officially over. I have just won a silver plate Mazda 12AX7S-H ***** STTA (not that the end bits make a difference) and an RT 12AX7S-HF for a stupidly low price. That makes up for me missing out on the Mazdas the other day. I thought you'd secured a Tungsram foil getter?

I have, but I put a cheeky low bet in on the two, expecting to be outbid, and I won them both. There is a similar valve on eBay being sold for more than 10 times the price I paid.

I have a couple of TFK 12AX7, and in the 12AX7S flavour a Mazda silver plate, Tunsgram Foil getter, a couple of la radiotechnique. I think that is sufficient?

This site has a few interesting 12AX7 listed. The Mazda triple Mica look like reasonable value for money compared to ebay. www.electrotubes.com/index-en.htmlI have not used them though, and I have no experience of them. Buyer beware... Edited to add that Bertrand at Electrotubes.com seems to be well thought of on French HiFi forums.

I think you posted something the other day regarding an RT tube, I assumed you'd left the F out, but just looked on ebay and there's an RT, don't think I've come across that make before. Suddenly the penny has dropped Radiotechnique

One of the RT 12AX7S arrived today. Blimey is it good. It has three little letters on it - FRS, so it was made in the “correct” factory. For the price paid, I am very happy, as it seems very clean in presentation, and there seems to be less noise than the TFK that was fitted before.

Would the RadioTechnique be clearer than the GE 7025 long plate grey, I've got a GE on my watch list but £72.50 is more than I want to pay for a valve at the moment?

I don’t know. You will struggle to find an RT for less, especially a 12AX7S.

Id use a 6N2P-EV-OS They are very well made, they sound very good and they are quite easy to find at the minute. Best is that they don't cost a fortune! If you want an ECC83, a Sovtek LPS will do a solid job for the burn in period.

Don't forget to move the heater link to 6N2P. No damage is caused by having it in the wrong position with either valve.

Yes that's the one. The pcb is marked with the relevant positions.

Good find! I do fancy them but I have other stuff to do now so I'll just be a watcher. Might see if a cheap one pops up

Hi chaps,
After a good run in period I think I’ve got the measure of the BB3, and it’s a fantastic bit of kit. Easily getting the best I’ve ever had out of my vinyl front end. Now it’s time to start thinking about valve rolling. I’ve re-read this thread in its entirety and consolidated what I think are the recommended valves for each position. Do please correct me if I’m wrong.
Being a total novice where it comes to valves I do I have a couple of questions. Is the PCC189 only suitable for V3 (despite PCC88s being suitable for either V1 or V3)? I noted that there was a jumper link to switch between the use of ECC83 or 6N2P valves for V2, but which camp does the 12AX7 fall into, if I should get one of those?
But clearly the big question is what are good sources for buying valves and how are the uninitiated to know if they are genuine (diamond symbol embossed on the bottom of TFKs, I have picked up on), or indeed in good shape?
It sounds like the TFKs are are the ones to go for, so if anyone could point me to a reputable source for obtaining either PCC88s or ECC83s then it would be appreciated. Also up for trying any of the others below if anyone knows of any good ones going, as they all seem very well liked as well.
V1: Tesla PCC88 Telefunken PCC88 EI PCC88 Siemens PCC88 Tungsram PCC88
V2: Telefunken ECC83 EI ECC83 Tungsram ECC83 Radiotechnique 12AX7 6N2P-EV-OS Sovtek LPS
V3: Telefunken PCC189 Brimar PCC189 Telefunken PCC88 Siemens PCC88
Cheers Dan
P.S. The 6N2P-EV-OS that were linked to on EBay are still going for not much more than £10, but not sure how much different they’d be than the standard 6N2P already in there?
