Can you hear a difference between these two files? File 1File 2
These were done with a different set up. Public disclaimer: No Houdinis were harmed (or used) in the making of these files.

Had to adjust levels, but File 1 sounds more dynamic to me with better impact and decay, but a bit fatter tonally. The HF in File2 sounded a bit recessed. I owuld prefer to listen to File 1 The good thing is that you can hear a difference. It is in preparation for my Houdini needle drops, although it may be unfair, as I need to check the bit rate of file 2. It may not be the same. If it is not, I will redo file 2. Yes it was clearly obvious but i will confess, as i am not a headphones guy, my selection is very limited. Any impressions are likely to be held hostage to the SQ i can pull from them at the minute. I will download and play the files via my PecanPi when you get the Houdini ones done. I am quite excited about this and it's also given me a great idea for the forum, but that will have to be for the future as it requires a bit of investment.

I still don’t think it will be a real substitute for hearing the “master” sound, but it should give a good idea. I have my cartridge spaced out by 4mm with 2 grammes of additional weight in those files. Houdini will require 2mm more, but I don’t see the 2mm making enough of a difference for me to have to ship out the current set up.

It's only for interest and no final conclusion could be drawn from listening to the needle drops, but it will be interesting to be on the journey with you

The fist clip is recorded at a significantly louder level so that sounds better. Could really do with them being at the same level for a comparison.
Both sound very good though.

The first clip is the MC cartridge. No level changes were made, apart from the gain adjustment. The needle drops using the Houdini will be using the same cartridge, so the difference in levels will not happen.

Just for full disclosure, I have received my invoice for my Houdini today - at the full RRP. I will pay the invoice when the Houdini arrives.
It will be evaluated as a £300 upgrade. I know people have been offered them for less, and some sent tbem for free. I am only posting this so you know I am paying for this upgrade with my own cash and no favours are being taken into consideration with my thoughts on the product.
Initial thoughts are that £300 stings, but I have not heard it yet.

Don't worry about any other facts other than what you hear.

With all the malarkey that has been going on, I just wanted to be clear.
If I don't like it, it will go back..... There is always a 1st.😉

Can't wait to here your thoughts. Looks like MArk over on Audioflat did a very accurate comparison, it makes for a good read.

It makes a noticeable difference. Just uploading two files to google dribve - Just under 1Gb total, so bear with me.

I think I hear more detail with better leading edge to the percussion. To my ears it just sounds better defined an less muffled.

The differences in set up are 1mm in the height to get the VTA the same, measured using my BUM gauge. VTF set at 2.5g and anti-skate left the same. I had purposely shimmed my cartridge out with a 4mm high density graphite block and a finger lift to get as similar state as possible. I think I also prefer track 1.
