What a busy few days Ive had!
After managing to procure two very nice Telefunken ECC83 from a fellow member and one from an American fella over on DIY audio, selling the Primaluna, paying off the shower and having a bit of spare change left over, i thought I'd do something sensible for once......
Future proof my Phonostage.
I contacted Derek at Watford Valves and enquired about his Telefunken PCC88 Stock. I asked if they were the ones with the dimpled getter, Diamond bass and manufactured at Ulm or Berlin, but it turns out they are probably Siemens made Telefunken, as they have the number in the side but no diamond.
Disappointingly, I decided to leave them for now. I want U/B codes if possible. I can always go back for those at a later date.
I narrowly missed a pair of Genuine NOS PCC189 which were still sealed. So nabbed the next best pair. Opened and tested.
The BB3 will accept a PCC189 In the V3 position, so the plan is to take one of my existing TELEFUNKEN PCC88 Valves out now and replace it with a 189. I will then save what's left on the 88 for a later date. While I am looking for genuine items at the very least anyway.
So, with 2x Tele Ecc83 in house and one enroute, and 2x PCC189 on the way, that should suffice?
Nope....I then went and bought a pair of the closest living relative to the TELEFUNKEN. 2x Yugoslavia made EI valves.
Here is why I bought them:
"EI made in Yugoslavia on geniuine Telefunken made tooling machines .
They are real vintage NOS tubes in original boxes made back in 90s in EI tube factory in Nis, Serbia. (Elektronska Industrija Nis)
If you like sound of Telefunken's smooth plates ECC83 12AX7, you'll like these too, because they are (almost) exact copy. The only differences are in thickness of halo getter and in "staples" which are facing each other."
Yes, all of this may mean very little when I plug them in, but the gut said go for them...so I did.
NOS Telefunken ECC83 are now going for around £300.....check out Tube Museum on eBay...they are asking stupid prices.
I was tempted by a pair of Amperex Bugle Boys, but at £150 each, I thought better of it.
If any of you boys and girls want to be running NOS valves in your gear, I suggest you stock up now, prices will only rise.
I also got a great bargain on 8x 6N2P-EV Valves, which are the "Big Rocket" version. Had one in for a couple of hours. They are like littler sounding Telefunken. Bonkers little things. Need a fair few hours for them to relax but they are military grade and have a shield built in, so they are super for audio.
I will add some thoughts on them once I use one for a fair few hours.
