Some of RFCs stirling work, with his own design inductors. Anyway , sounds good to me. A good incentive to crack on with the cabs, roll on sunshine! Did Paul build those for you. Yes, about 4 years ago lol.

I know that's how long this project is taking!! Mine is coming up to three years since I first bought the drivers and crossovers. Although I've got the excuse that it isn't me building them (mainly because I couldn't so all due respect ). Must be a Tannoy thing.

I was very lucky when I did my Tannoy project I think the whole thing took less than six months from start to finish, this included finding the drivers, getting paul to make to external xo and Russ Collinson to do the cabinets.

Making the cabs in a garden is very time consuming and reliant on the weather! Half the time when I have spare time it's raining. Then when I'm busy it's sunny!.
That's my excuse anyway. Once the baffles are routed and fixed I'll be able to finish everything else indoors so should make more progress then.

Are you making the front baffles extra thick? For my Ardens I was advised to make it twice as thick as the one Tannoy fit as standard.

The drivers are just such amazing pieces of engineering. No wonder they make most other speakers sound like toys.

I had the crazy thought of sticking a pair of 286 boards in the cabs and making them actives. But best I just get them up and running, its taken me this long to get this far lol.

What gives you that impression? Just what has been put on forums mate. The idea that a SS amp doesn't get the best from them seems to be perpetuated a lot

The idea that a SS amp doesn't get the best from them seems to be perpetuated a lot lots of stuff gets perpetuated but it's mostly utter balls. The worst amplifiers I've heard (with one exception) have all been valve amps - but they were mostly expensive tat or 'bargain' Chinese tat - all aimed at the mug punter who thinks there is something intrinsically special about anything that uses valves - regardless of how rubbish the rest of the amplifier is. A good amp is a good amp, valves or transistors is just irrelevant except that a good valve amp will cost a lot more than a good solid state because quality output traffos aren't cheap and they matter a lot to the sound quality - as a listen to a good OTL valve amp will easily show. I think you'd get a good sound with any type of Tannoy - and red, silver and gold drivers are just stupid money now so doubt you'd be going for any of them anyway - so that's moot.

You never know Macca. I like to have a well rounded experience a s Tannoys are a gaping hole In my CV

You should go for it, they be fine in your room, I've heard them work in much smaller rooms.
Just don't get Lancaster cabs - I never heard a Lancaster sound any good, I think they are partly what gives old Tannoys a bad name as they are the most common type of cab. That was the first Tannoy I ever heard - driven by some knackered old valve amp - and it was truly crap, wondered what the fuss was all about.

You don't want an amp with any hardness in the sound though or they will just sound like a PA system. That's maybe why some say solid state no good for them. But that's just a stupid generalisation.

Yes well I don't think that's an issue here so maybe I'll keep my eyes open for some in a few months time.

What gives you that impression? If you had not asked Macca, I most certainly would have. I have read, although Tannoy's are supposed to be easy to drive, they have large cones which really need a 'bit of power'. Has it happens I've been pulling my brother's leg about going for a pair when and if he changes his Estelon's. His amp should be able to drive them.

Working out the placement for the binding post plate. will have to route out to a depth of 6 mill so it's suitably recessed.
