Hi Andy, hows things?
Always wanted to hear a Koetsu. They are mythical beasts too me!
Alright Jim, things are going ok. I've a few "projects" planned, nothing too exciting, mainly playing around with some carts, I might do a little modding with my 301. I also have a hankering for a new 12" tonearm, maybe even a BB3 to see me over Winter.

I am just getting used to the new listening room and now evaluating what needs to be done to integrate my system better and wether I need to make any changes.
I feel the same answer keeps occuring....bigger speakers!

How did the Cadenza turn out? Oli. that seems like such a long time ago! It turned out much better than I thought. The FGS profile is a complete PITA to set up, I'd forgotten painstakingly careful you have to be. Overall 50 hours break-in were needed and now I'm at a point where it's performing better than ever. I'm happy and I have a cart which should last now for the next 5-7 years I've several decks so the 1210 only gets a few hours every so often. I mainly use SPU's and Shure MM's. So, the Koetsu and Royal N SPU will prove a nice distraction. I was sat here waiting for the results of the run in...and it never came lol Glad it's doing good things and I suppose a sign of the result is that you're doing more Cartridges. Good news

bigbird has one in his Garrard.....as nice as it is, I can't help but feel there is a more economical way of achieving the same thing?

I run my Garrard 401 through a PS Audio P10 so I have a very clean and stable power supply. Speed is pretty constant anyway, I might end up using a Phoenix Engineering PSU + Tachometer on the 401.

The Shure SC35C I've owned one of these for age and I did start a small project last year that never gained traction. So, I decided to finish it.
Total weight is 21-22g with cartridge tags and stylus. I've removed the main cartridge body and replaced with a Pulse Paradox aluminium outer casing. I have no idea how this is going to sound. The cartridge just about squeezes into the correct compliance and resonance for my SME 3012 tonearm. I went mad on bought one of these
www.jico-stylus.com/product/ss35c-sas-b/Went for the Boron cantilever as I already own a SAS/S(apphire) stylus for my M55E. Loading capacitance is usually around 450-500pF which I've already got setup for my M55E. Should be fun when everything arrives.

I'm a lot more selective nowadays with gear and tend to do a lot of research before I buy stuff. I only buy stuff that's of interest, and that's why I don't post much stuff.

I imagine I'll end up like that.....one day lol I've been messing around for about 20 years now so I now have a good idea of how I like things to sound, although I'm always happy to experiment. I get the greatest satisfaction nowadays from restoring and DIY builds.

Bought one of these today from the US of A. An original NOS stylus for 4.5g tracking, it's as hell a big difference from a JICO (B) stylus at 1.25-1.50g tracking!!
It's going to be a long time before I can compare them, one stylus is coming from Japan the other from the USA!!!
My 301 will be undergoing a little surgery. I've bought some new idler wheel bushings as I think my old ones have finally given up the ghost after nearly 60 years usage!!!!!!

I had to go to Italy this time. I did a similar procedure on my 401, I'm getting a slight knocking, it doesn't have an impact on the performance of the 301 but it just bugs me (BIG TIME)!!!

That is a big tracking weight but I am sure they will both sound rather nice.

Hi mate hope your well ? I’d be interested to hear how you got on with swapping these 85A2 in as I’ve changed all of my other valves in the Croft’s to good effect but not the stock Mullard 85a2 that came with them . Wasn’t sure if it would improve the sound as it’s the power regulation valve ? I had big improvements putting NOS 1956 RCA black plate 12BH7A in the inputs of the pre and monoblocks . So much so I think they are the best valves ive ever heard . Magical things

Hi Karl,
The Siemens and RCA were the best of the bunch.
I think the Amperex was radioactive!

Hi Karl, The Siemens and RCA were the best of the bunch. I think the Amperex was radioactive! That’s Interesting , I had no idea a power regulator could influence the sound . I best have a look at some if I can get an improvement for sub 20 quid. Cheers Jim

HELLO! Another we update tonight. I've had news from Holland and it looks like my SPU can be repaired, I've given the go ahead. "besides the broken coil-wire, it is teeming with metal flakes/dust which will be manually cleaned. The suspension will need realignment; both azimuth and lateral alignment are off and the main damper-disc has some hairline cracks, replacing it would be prudent. The new damper will be of a slightly better compound and we will optimise the generator-geomety for optimal alignment. So all in all, it will be original but optimal and in some ways lightly improved on standard form."
I honestly can't wait to get my Royal N SPU back. It's the best I've heard and should be as good as new, if not better. I'm using a Silver Meister II SPU which is no slouch but I love the Royal better. I'm also debating mosfet regulation for the valves on my Croft, suggested by Mr. Firebottle. We have no idea if it's a waste of time but I suppose we'll never know until we try. I've got the idler wheel bushings to rebuild on my 301 and my SC35C project on the. Andy boy is going to be busy over Xmas, and maybe even a BB3 to play with over Xmas.

It's a bit of a hot item at the moment Glad your SPU can be saved. Can feel the excitement in your post....that's a great thing. Kilian is the man.

TBH I don't really need another MM phonostage I've the EAR 834p clone, the one built into the croft, the one built into my Radford SC25 and another in my ATC SCA-2 preamp, that's 4!!!!!!!!! I'm still looking into what I want the BB3 to do and I'd sooner wait and hear about your Tx experiments. I've just found a stash of Mullard E88CC gold pins (can these be used on BB3)? I've also found some Mullard ECC82's, I have no idea where these came from but they commanding stupid prices.

Yes, thats quite sensible as it may be possible to change the case to a one box if the O-Core does what i expect. Unfortunately, that looks like being a week away from postage to me after James Transformer apparently had it rejected at their border for incorrect paperwork. I am in no rush though. Good job as it has to go back to them to sort out first... The mullard E88CC could be used. I would have to mod the BB3 slightly, but i am doing that with my own anyway to use some nice russian valves i found. It's no problem
