You must have read My mind! LOL! Setting up the Cadenza black should be pretty easy on the V, it's got fixed head shell geometry, cartridge overhang is a complete doddle, as is tracking and loading weight and also VTA . Might have to play around a little with VTA, usually takes a few minutes to get it aligned. I always hate the first 20-40 hours break in period as you always think "what have I done", then the damping and suspension loosens a little and then your in Nirvana!

I think you will find it is quite a different beast than a plain vanilla cadenza black especially if Killian has done some work on damping it never mid the stylus profile.
Exciting!

Yep exciting times. The 1210 was an amazing deck even before I sent the CB away, should be even more forensic and insightful.

I think the CB has an awful lot of the technology associated with carts in the £4-7K bracket. I'm only missing a diamond cantilever and a laser melted case and then I'd up-to scratch!!!!

Ortofon Cadenza Black - Fritz Geiger now installed on my 401!!! The Technics is having some mods done!! So far I've about 4-5 hours on the CB-FG and it sounds amazing. Loads of detail and it was very easy to set up on the SME V-12. I need to have a little play with the loading values with the Paradise. It still needs another 40 hours before it beds in. Life's hard listening to this vinyl.

Initially very disappointing. I then remembered experiencing something similar the first time I got the cartridge 8 years ago (yes 8 years ago). The old CB has a different diamond plonked on the end so consequently the SME V was setup for that and needed changing. The VTA was off even though tracking weight and antiskate were set. The cartridge overhand and tonearm position is a doddle to set up on the V but VTA is a different kettle of fish and needs a bit of tweaking. So, the first impressions were quite poor, the cartridge lacked impact and bass control, it just wasn't quite right and this brought back memories of initially setting the cartridge up. I also had to take into consideration the cartridge suspension needs to "relax" and this can take 10-50 hours. I'm now up to about 10 hours. Things were quite underwhelming, light on vocals, microdetail lacking, generally BLAH! Now things are different the VTA has been better dialled in and bass has real control and impact, soundstage is quite literally fully width across my listening room. I'm digging a greater level of detail out of the grooves, something which hasn't happened for a while. Overall a good upgrade. I think we have more to come but quite literally I'm working 12-15 hour days to get the clinics up and running so I can only mess around with the deck on the weekend and then only for a couple of hours, this will pass in the next few weeks so hopefully I should have more time to play and fine tweak the CB FGS.

Sounds like your very busy with work Andy so must be frustrating not being able to get enough time to listen and tweak the set up. Hope it turns out well after you have put a few more hours on it.

Thanks Jim, appreciated. I'm a lot happier now that it's beginning to yield results. The CB FGS is now at a slightly higher level than the old CB used to be, so that can't be bad. It's exciting to hope that there's more to come.

Even on my humble retro system the AT95ex has changed a fair amount and is now kicking out much better tonal quality than it did when I first installed it. In fact it sounds like a different cartridge.
Problem is I am about to go through the whole experience again with a brand new Jico stylus in the M55e as soon as the new head shell turns up!

Glad you are appreciating the Lenco and your music. Having owned Lenco's for the last 25 years or so, they are immensely tuneable/tweakable. The changes you made are mainly servicing and replacing failed parts - what you are hearing is almost what the first owner would have heard I suppose. As you know with anything in HiFi, you can now start to go silly such as new plinths, arms, bearings...... will it be worth it? Possibly. Just enjoy what you have now though

The CB-FGS continues to frustrate and beguile! I've settles on tracking at 2.2g with antiskate at 1g. The VTA is the biggest VTA although things have improved markedly over the last day or so. Tonearm geometry has been checked, rechecked and checked again. I can't wait for another 35 hours to pass on this cartridge, hopefully the suspension will have "relaxed". I'm going to have a little play with the loading value of the phonostage to see if we can get a little more out of the cartridge.

Right I've decided I've had enough of buggering about. I'll be getting a Fozgometer. This should make VTA alignment a piece of pi$$. I've got Dr. Feickhart protractor and this has proven to be very useful, I've now got null point alignment setup bang on according to Feickhart. I've put out an APB to forum subscribers and trade dealers to see if they can get me a cheap Fozgometer. I'll give this a few days and then I'll pull the trigger on ebay. I'll be buggering about with loading plugs in the back of the phonostage to see how that effects what I'm hearing.

Is the FGS CB proving a bit tricky to set up? No, it's not tricky as such I've made great progress and the carts sounding very good indeed but I have 3 TT's so I think a Fozgometer might be a good long term investment.

Not much happening on the RexBlog home front. I've sent my Keotsu Black and Ortofon Royal N SPU for some tweaking. Let's see what happens....

How did the Cadenza turn out?

How did the Cadenza turn out? Oli. that seems like such a long time ago! It turned out much better than I thought. The FGS profile is a complete PITA to set up, I'd forgotten painstakingly careful you have to be. Overall 50 hours break-in were needed and now I'm at a point where it's performing better than ever. I'm happy and I have a cart which should last now for the next 5-7 years I've several decks so the 1210 only gets a few hours every so often. I mainly use SPU's and Shure MM's. So, the Koetsu and Royal N SPU will prove a nice distraction.
