The Garrard 301 Restoration Project PT XXXXIV - More Tom Tweakery! It's been a little while since I posted anything about the 301. I'm actually listening to some Monk on my 401/SME V-12/Shure M55E/EAR 834 clone setup for a change. The 301 is having some more work done on it so may as well give the 401 a spin. The latest mods have been based around trying to reduce vibration further into the 301 by using some feet I purchased from ebay years ago. These feet are nicely milled aluminium adjustable jobbies which sit on some ball bearings. Here's a quick pickie of the 301 having cleaning and fettling, this is a ritual that I always perform if I'm modding the 301, it keeps all the intrinsic clean. It's not a thing of beauty but it gets the job done. And now just a quick picture of how the new feet look after installation, I've still not properly levelled everything at this stage so the feet may look a little wonky. .
The jury is still out. Sometimes I think they are beneficial and other times I'm not so sure. I still have the bamboo feet I made kicking around so nothing lost and nothing gained if they don't work out. I must admit to being very pleasently surprised by the performance of the 401. It makes a nice change to sometimes listen to different decks and carts. As always stay tuned.

Does the bearing sit in a long curvature "bowl", or in a curve only slightly larger than the bearing itself, or the bearing is held securely from moving? Only the first option is likely to have good horizontal isolating effect.

Sunday Night - Update Night - Shure Adventures Pt IX - Digging this 70's MM
Welcome back to an occasional series of updates regarding my ever ongoing fun and messing around with old Shure Cartridges. So, I have decided the Shure M44 is just too bright in my system and shall now remain in my collection of vintage curios. I just could not get on with the M44-7 no matter how hard I tried. So, the M55E will be my vintage Shure cartridge of reference and yes I do realise that technically better cartridges exist in the Shure line up. I'm still to try the vast majority of the other cartridges but I'm Shure i'll get around to it at some point. I've so far done the V15 mk III and the SC35C. To my ears the M55E is such a great little cartridge that can be tweaked and pushed to high levels of performance. It does help that I have it mounted to a very well matched tonearm and a very well sorted deck. I have decided to invest in a Panzerholz wooden body for my M55E, it's just one of those things which I think should knock the level of performance up a notch or two.
I have also been playing around with the capacitance loading with the cartridge, I use this element of cartridge optimisation as a type of "TONE" control. Presently I have been loading the cartridge with approximately 550pf, this came as a surprise as I assumed that I'd been listening to approx 500pf of loading. Yep, 50pf, massive! To my ears the presentation is a little softer, no quite as strident, slightly less detail, a more relaxed presentation I shall have to see if I like this and then make a decision about capacitance loading. I have always tracked the M55E at 1.5g which I have found to sound the best in my system. The ultimate would be to add a really nice JICO stylus maybe one of the SAS series, JICO don't make any SAS stylii for the M55E but do for the M44-7. Stylii for the M44-7 should according to the Shure website should be compatible with the M55E, so I'd like to be extremely shure (sorry) that the thing works in the M55E before I buy one.
Phonostage selection has been pretty easy so far. My EAR834 Clone has trounced three MM stages that I own. I own two Croft MM phonostages and a phonostage which resides in my Radford pre-amp. I really have no desire to start trying loads of different MM phonostages but I'm always happy to try something new should the situation occur.
As ever guys. Stay tuned...

Sunday Night - Update Night - Lenco's and Garrard's.
Lenco!
This is an eBay purchase for a new Lenco deck that I had planned! It's a slow burning project which will act as a test bed for all the various Lenco bits and pieces that are on sale or have been produced in the past. The idea is to produce is MY ultimate expression of a Lenco GL75. A reference deck if you like. It will be pretty cool to pit this against my Garrard 301 and 401. This project is not designed to produce the ultimate Lenco, just my interpretation. So, opinions will vary, but it's just a whole load of fun. Should last another 200K views. Garrard
The 401 has been a mainstay of my collection for a good number of years now. Presently I'm having a kick-ass time experimenting with JICO stylii, this time it's the JICO SAS/B N447X stylus and it's a real stunner. I'm using this with my modded Shure M55E cartridge, this in itself will be going through a modification with a new Panzerholz body when it arrives from Germany. The new stylus has had about 5-7 hours usage and is nicely burning in, I'm having loads of fun trying different LP's which I haven't played for years. The 401 really is an amazing deck even though it's shunned by people who want an example of it's older brother the 301. Here's a quick picture of current 401 setup. And here is a close up of the JICO N447-X SAS/B stylus in the Shure M55E.
I'm still debating getting the SAS/R which would be the ultimate for the little Shure M55E, maybe one day! Stay tuned...

Monday Night (WHAT'S THIS) - Update night
I seem to be doing quite a few different things all at once so I have merged a few of my projects together and this is how I shall be presenting them.
LENCO GL75
The Reference Lenco Pt CX- Under staters orders....
And we are off. I see a clear path with respects to what I want to do with this Lenco deck, and the answer is NOTHING! Well, I'm going very sympathetically restore the deck. This deck is only several weeks older than myself and I just couldn't possibly butcher the thing. It's a bit tatty in places but it's in very good order. I've noticed a few parts missing but I think I have these in storage and the rest should be very easily fixed. Presently the deck sits in quite a flimsy compressed wood plinth with a very flimsy 3mm hardboard base, it's teak veneered (very 70's) with a few scuffs. The base is a matt black colour with some scuffs and some glue marks. The top plate has a few very small areas of pitting. The tonearm is pitted and the back end is broken. I've not even got the thing spinning yet! I've done some very basic restoration work today. I cleaned the rubber platter mat and the rubber plinth feet with Autoglym rubber restorer and they have come up looking very nice. The tonearm counter weight and slider weight have a very high gloss chrome finish, this was pitted, so today I have polished them both and results are acceptable for the moment, needless to say they will get more attention. And that dear friends is about as far I have got today. It's a slow burn process which I'll do in my spare time. I'm now in a quandry in I want to keep the deck as stock as possible. I'm not going to change any of the wiring other than the mains lead which needs to be properly earthed. I'll service the bearing and maybe the tonearm as well. We shall see!
SHURE
Shure Adventures Pt X - Nit Picking!
The Shure M55E / JICO N447X SAS/B combo is amazing. I've not touched my £1600 Silver Meister II SPU sitting on my Garrard 301 in two weeks! I suppose this preserves the stylus for a few more weeks at some point in the future. I've now decided that 525pF capacitance on the M55E is about as good as it gets on my system. I'm also prefering the presentation of ECC83 over RCA 5691's in a valve phonostage which is something that I thought I would never ever say but there you go. The presentation has lots more detail and is a less laid back and more clinical in nature. Timbral detail is amazing. Soundstage is wide but I do worry that other vintage MM carts have better channel seperation compared to the M55E. my problem is Stylii. Buying old carts is easy but buying a NOS stylii is a complete shitfest. JICO (my preferred suppliers) only make the SAS stylii for a very limited numbers of brands, mainly Shure. ADC and Pickering have produced some excellent carts which would probably knock the M55E into the distance but there is no Stylii which compares to the JICO SAS profile. Loading weight has been another area of experimentation. Guess what I setttled on 1.25g and JICO recommend.............. 1.25g I'm still waiting for my Panzerholz cartridge body from Germany, this should be fun and maybe a nice improvement in presentation.
GARRARD
I've just purchased the Lomg Dog Audio Mk 2 PSU so we should have some fun trying this out on my 301/401 and Lenco.
Well that's it..... Stay tuned.

OK it's not Sunday, but it is update night!
LENCO REFERENCE TT ADVENTURES
OK, the experiment has begun! I will own two Lenco GL75's, one stock and one an experimental reference TT, I'll be keeping both. So, the old Lenco was purchased originally for parts but it was saved when I noticed that it was made only several weeks before I was born. So I decided to restore the deck and keep it as part of my collection. I've been wanting a new TT project for ages and haven't really seen anything that floated my boat. I never really finished my Lenco journey and I wanted to do so much more with the GL75 TT's. I have been quitely collected pieces of kit for the stock machine, I'll update you all in a later post. The first thing to do was repair the plinth. As we can see it's had a bit of a bash.
The back end had been smashed in. The whole point of this experiment is to try and reproduce as close as possible how a stock GL75 would jave sounded in 1973 (when I was born). A smashed plinth is not going to achive this. So, after a little wood glue and a few clamps we have this.
The underside of the plinth is still a very very clean and tidy black, I'll not be respraying this, there is no need, the paintwork is excellent. I have bought some Teak oil. I did manage to oil the plinth and this is now how it looks.
The rubber grommets which help protect the GL75 form vibration are knackered. Here we can see them removed from the deck and are very badly mishapen. The good news is that I have ordered a replacement set from Sweden! These Swedish grommets are about as close as your going to get to the originals. I have also cleaned the plinths rubber feet with cleaning products, they appear to be in good condition so I've kept these. There are other exciting developments which I'll detail as things arrive through the post. I will be replacing new parts on the deck and will over the next few weeks and months completely go through the deck. It's going to be a slo' blo' resto! The real fun will begin when I build the new reference TT and start comparing all the lovely new add-ons and upgrades that are now available to a lovely old stock machine.
Shure & Garrard
Only a very small update tonight. My Panzerholz cartridge body arrived from Germany and here it is awaiting installation.
Now this should be something special.
Well that's about it for tonight, so as ever stay tuned...

Friday Night (not Sunday for a change) - Update Night!
LENCO
I've done so many of these now I can do them in my sleep! This is the bearing from the stock deck. In a bid to try and keep the deck as original as possible I have kept all parts and not upgraded anything. So, to start the bearing didn't look too bad but did have some corrosion on top of the spindle. As you can see cosmetically, it's not bad.
Here's everything stripped down and cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). A bit dirty
And then in the ultrasonic cleaner.
Spindle grease actually tuned hard!
Spindle polished to remove scratches and bearing being soaked in ISA to keep clean before being reoiled.
More cleaning.
Final product ready for reinstallation. This is a slow project that I'm on no rush to finish. I have many other TT's to spin and play vinyl. Stay tuned!

Sunday Night - Update Night!
Hiya guys, back to normal with an update on Sunday. So, Jazz is playing and a single malt sits by my side. Here's what been happening with the various systems.
GARRARD
I did have what I thought was a nice Long Dog PSU II for the Garrard decks, but no! Shady dealings with Emporium HiFi on eBay meant that it was all bollocks. I will never ever use these people again. Fortunately no money was lost. The hunt for a second hand Long Dog PSU II continues. The 301 now enters it's third month of not being used. Yep, the M55E+JICO SAS/B continues to be a revelation. I have been quietly researching vintage reference MM carts. Options are limited by the availability of stylii. JICO being my preferred suppliers only make Ruby cantilevers for a very few select cartridges, so something ruby coloured for the M55 is still an option even though it's not reference level. The main contenders are something either Stanton or Grace. Some of the top of range Technics carts have been ruled out due to problems with suspensions and no availability of some of the more exotic cantilevers. The quest continues.
LENCO
So here is a picture of the stock Lenco. It's hiding a few secrets! I thought I'd detail what's been done so far. 1. The platter has had a little polish. It's still not great and is a work in progress. I'll polish it a little every day or so until I'm happy with the finish. OK this is not strictly going to improve the performance of the deck but it sure looks nice! 2. Speed selector replacement. This deck had no speed selector and luckily I managed to find a fully intact one in my spares, so whilst not original to this deck it's colour perfect for the year the deck was made. 3. The platter mat. This was filthy, so the disc has been polished and the mat has been cleaned and treated to some Autoglym rubber repair. 4. The top plate. The paint work has been T-cut a couple of times and now shines, I notice a couple of bubbles under the paintwork but I like these and are part of the decks history. I polished the metal trim on the top plates base, again very dirty but now just looks factory fresh. 5. The bias weight. The screw was missing from the bias weight and a really helpful LH member sent me a replacement. 6. I've polished the counterweights on the tonerarm. So, a few things still need doing. The tonearm needs a little cleaning and overhauling, new "V" blocks, better grounding wire, etc. The motor needs stripping and overhauling. I need to install new power cable, and a few other bits and bobs. Slow and steady wins the race. I've now been told that my speed selector knob is not the correct vintage, so it looks like I will be looking out for a new knob (fnarrr)! Stay tuned.

MONDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT
LENCO
It's alive, it's alive.....
The stock 75 has now been powered up and she spins and sings! Speed stability is ok, it seems to vary +/- 0.1 33.4rpm. I've not properly mounted the 75 in it's stock plinth, the motor and idler arm still need a service so this may help stability. The deck sitting uneven on a load of bamboo and carpet so I'm not too bothered about speed stability just yet.
I have spent the day polishing the underside of the platter and can confirm that I have removed nearly all the old rubber deposits from the last 50+ years of usage. I can still see a very thin circular mark around the underside of the platter but it sure is a lot better than it was, I also cleaned the spindle shaft on the platter, man lots of nasty stuff came from that. The motor is a little noisy and may will probably benefit from a decent service, this may help with noise, overall I have heard louder motor's on Lenco's so this one isn't that bad.
I can also confirm that the tonearm is working and in good order. Tonearm raise mechanism is in good order and the old cartridge a Shure M75 EJ is working ok. I didn't bother fine tuning the tonearm as I have lots of other stuff to do. I just wanted to see if we had two stereo channels and indeed we do. The antibias weight need rethreading and polishing but that's a job for another day. So work continues slowly and steadily. I will probably start work on the PTP 5 side of this experiment when I'm happy that the stock 75 is as good as I can get it. Work beckons tomorrow so updates and work on the deck will slow down. It's been a bank holiday frenzy.
Stay tuned.

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT!
LENCO
Things have been bubbling along nicely with this project, I see the project is getting a fair amount of interest with about 5K reads over the last few weeks. That's pretty good going. One of the great bonuses of being an audio nut is having bits and pieces from other projects kicking around your loft / garage / workshop or whatever. For me it's been a quick rummage in the attic and the garage. In the loft I managed to find two heavy platters from the original Reference Lenco project and some platter damping rings. The garage yielded a nice solid copper / gold plated IEC for the power supply. I did buy a motor from a famous auction site for <£25 delievered, it remains as yet untested. Looks like a bought a bit of a duffer. The motor splindle has signs of rust which isn't a great start but this does not worry me as I know this can be polished and usually made better than factory spec once properly you've gone through all the various grades of wet and dry. The motor also needs some springs so I shall see if I have a spare set in the spares box in the garage, I think I might be lucky! I also have a bearing which will need a full service and shall be used to get the PTP Lenco working, it will probably be changed for something better but it's a start! This could be my fun little project over the next few days after work, maybe modding the bearing. The first decision has been made about the design of the PTP Lenco and this is if the PTP is going to be sitting flush with the top surface of the plinth which will mean a messing about with a router is shall I just mount it screwed directly to the plinth. Errrmmm, it's getting screwed, or maybe bolted. I haven't decided yet. I'll probably go down the route bolt/washer to make the interface bewteen plinth and PTP as bonded as possible. I did something similar to my Garrard 301 plinth that I designed and I think I got pretty good results with that. So that's actually, possibly, two decision made !?! Now the other side of the experiment, the stock lenco has recieved very little attention. I was going to fit a better power cable this week but just jad no time. I did polish the underside of the platter a little to try and remove 50 years worth of rubber. The picture dosen't really show much progress but I can tell you that it does look a lot better compared to when I first purchased the deck. As ever, slow and steady wins the race with this project, you have to remember I'm doing two Lenco's up at the same time. Anyway, here's a rather uninspiring picture of the underside of the platter.
Well that's about it for this week so stay tuned.

Sunday Night - Update Night
LENCO
Tonights update is all about the Reference side of things. The stock Lenco has taken a bit of a back-burner for the time being, but then again this whole project really is a slow burner. I'm always happy to try new stuff especially from the people that support the forums and the more I do "Audiophile" the more I realise that you don't have to put up with the bullshit prices that companies feel able to charge. The Rerefence Lenco was going to have a specific bearing and double stacked platter but now I think I'm going to go with a custom bearing, bearing collar and platter combo from Malaysia. I've never tried them before, so why not? All products will work with the PTP 5 so happy days. I've also been thinking about the motor. The first thing to do was to get the thing up and running to see if it worked. Well I didn't trust the dodgy two core wire that the thing came supplied with so I added a new earth lead and chopped a 3 core fused power lead from an old fridge freezer.
'm glad to say that things kicked into life. The motor is noisy but it does need some work and we knew this anyone, just check out the status of the spindle . So, at some point I'll bite the bullet and service the motor, time always seems to be short nowadays. I also decided that I needed a new set of motor springs considering this unit was missing said piece of very important kit. I just so happens a man that can, so I'll be having brand new springs rather than some which are ? approaching 50 years old. I will also be treating the reference Lenco to a new idler wheel and idler arm grommet but that's another story for another post.
DIGITAL
WTF! Digital on Rextons blog?
Well it had to happen at some point. So here is a picture of a quick digitalk setup that I put together tonight.
y
A Sony BDPS185, a Brz Audio Linear PSU, and a Breeze Audio TPA3116 mini amplifier, going through a pait of IMF Super compacts II's which I have fullty recapped and replaced the binding posts with pure copper Cardas bindind posts. Speaker cable is Duelund and IC's and Belden/Duelund RCA's. The Sony is running through the PS Audio P10 and the linear PSU through the Tesco extension. Yes, it's a real bodge up but it sounds OK for a mish-mash of cheap and cheerful bits and pieces. Nowhere near the last word in Audiophool tom-phoolery but it's ok and just a bit of fun. I'll probably upgrade and mess around with this, we now have silver disc spinning capability.
Stay tuned.

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT
I usually do my updates on Sunday night, it's become a ritual that I enjoy. So, tonight, it's raining in my neck of the woods and I smell a garage project. I've been going to mod the 3009 for quite some time. I've had stuff to do and the 3009 is hardly top of my list of stuff to do. So, I hunted down what I needed in the garage and found some flexible plastic and some old WBT silver RCA's that I'd used on a previous project. And here we are after a bit of butchery. A proof of concept if you like to see if this will work. The WBT's are a bit big and will require some re-spacing. I need to re-cut and re-do the plastic mount but it's a slow-blow project so I'm happy with the way things are going. There is no turning back now as I de-soldered all the tonearm wiring from the old SME tonearm cable mount. I'm also going to get the 3009 rewired in silver. I have a few other tricks up my sleeve for the MONO setup, as always these things cost money but that's ok, it's a hobby and I get immense enjoyment from silly projects like this. Now the 301 infrastructure has had the benefit of Stack Audio footers for a few weeks, I've managed to secure a little more time with these. I will at some point have to re-install all my Townshend stuff and then do a comparison to see if my original thoughts on the benefits of Stack footers actually stack up (sorry for that)! The Paradise is stilll having a holiday in Sheffield being repaired and upgraded. I must say that the Paradise that I borrowed is indeed better than the one I own and I've asked for the upgrades to go ahead. Well I think that's it, so STAY TUNED....

Sunday Night - Update Night!
Lazy update tonight. Things are in bits and pieces. My SME 3009 jorney continues at a very slow pace. I have now made my new IPE tonearm mount for my SME 3009 which means that the tracking angle can be better set, no more using several platter mats to get the correct VTA. My only issue with my SME is that it's a non-improved variant as this would have been better for SPU and vintage MM cartridge usage. I decided that it would be cheaper to do sympathetic modifications to the 3009 that I own. Presently I have problems with the tonearm cable and have to use a large blob of bluetac on the counter weight to balance the SPU which makes the 3009 look ugly but fully functional. So, the 3009 is having a few early Xmas presents, firstly a new silver rewire and secondly a new counter weight made of sufficient mass to replace the bluetac. Finally a nice new pair of Mark Grant Oyaide FTVA-510 cables. I will of course keep the original counter weight close at hand so that I can use vintage MM's. The 301 is forming into being a bit of a swiss army knife. I have one SME 3012 which is exclusive for SPU's. The 3009 will be MONO and vintage MM duties. I have decided to use my EAR 834P as MY MM reference. Yes, I understand there are many phonostages out there which are far better than the EAR834P clone that I own but it's the best sounding thing I have in my system. So far the 834P has outshone a Croft extrinsic special design, the intrinsic Croft MM stage on my Charisma Croft Pre-AMP and a ATC SCA2 MM module. My EAR834P clone is very flexible, it has two tonearm inputs, MONO, Earthlift and cartridge loading, all very good for using mulitple MM's.
I have also managed to purchase a very lightly used Grace F9e cartridge, the one with the ruby cantilever, again much cheaper than buying anything from JICO. This little beauty is coming from the land of Oz. I'm hoping for good things with this cart. I should then be set up for Xmas and hopefully have a very nice couple of weeks away from work relaxing to Jazz, classical, and any other lovely 12" vinyl purchases over the winter nights. My quest for a dead/alive Garrard 301 motor continues for the decoupling project that I have planned for the plinth. I think that just about it for tonight, so as ever, stay tuned.....

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT!
Another week and another update. The 301 will be a slightly more versatile beast when the SME 3009 is fully modded. I shall have something very nice to play around with over the Xmas period. Presently, my custom made slider weight from Magna Audio is being made and should enable a very cosmetically enhanced experience versus a massive piece of bluetack giving extra mass. I have now found a light weight headshell for vintage MM's, it's not the one that I want but it's ok at the moment, it's the relevant mass and should enable for very good compatability for my Grace F9E which is currently on it's way as we speak from the land of Oz. I managed to find some silver cartridge leads and have also finished making my RCA conversion for the SME 3009, yep, Heath Robinson, it cost nothing and I already had the WBT silver RCA's in my spares box.
I will never sell my 301 and no-one is going to see this bit of the tonearm, so I'm happy with the cosmetics. I have a pair of Yannis Tome silver IC's that I shall borrow from another system and this completes all the bits I need. The 3009 will be sent to J7 at Audio Origami for a silver re-wire and I can also install the newly made IPE tonearm mount. That should be all the upgrades the 3009 needs. I'm on the lookout for a Magnesium head shell for the Grace MM but that's something that I can stalk on ebay or maybe buy one from a forum member. Now finally one more update. I have ditched the Stack Audio footers that I had installed in my system. The footers did a great job of adding a little extra vim and loudness to the system, but I had to ask if that's what I really wanted. I have a technics 1210 if I want drama and forensic levels of detail. I mainly use my 301 as a tool of relaxation on an evening, jazz and whiskey are usually involved and it makes for a nice evening before the drudge of worklife. So, my Townshend products went back in the system and my preferred slightly darker, relaxed, detailed, wide soundstage with excellent instrument seperation came back into my life. I think my 3009 will provide my more vim and vigour than the Stack Audio products when fully modded and will also be considerably more flexiblility for vinyl replay. As ever, stay tuned.....

A few things to digest here, Rexton.
Firstly, I am not sure how I have missed the updates, but I have. So apologies. I do enjoy keeping an eye on what you're doing.
Secondly....did the digital stick around or has it gone by the wayside?
Thirdly.... removal of the Stack Audo?! Heresy! 😂
Fourthly....how much for them?? 😂😂
The SME silver wired ay...that will be a rare tonearm when it's done. I remember owning one briefly. It came on a Toshiba TT I bought. I only bought it for the TT and sold the arm for enough to cover the cost of the purchase. A real result. I didn't mind the arm though, in fact I quite enjoyed it. That and the Shure V??? Cart that came with it.

SATURDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT
Oli, the digital setup is still around but my TEAC VRDS 25X is being repaired and shall be used as a transport on it's return and when I feel like spinning something silver and circular. I'll then probably start shopping around for a DAC. The Stack Audio footers were removed from my Valve system purely because they were too good! Yes, too good! The Stack gear would have been £600 I think, but it added too much vim to an already very relaxedm, detailed and Jazz focused system. The Stack gear, I think would have been excellent in my very analytical Technics/ATC system, maybe, one day I might be tempted again and buy them for this system, presently, my focus is on the Garrard/Radford/Croft Valve system.
The 301 project is stuck in limbo but plenty of progress has been made. The biggest problem has been finding the bits and pieces needed for the vision that I had for the 301. I will post some pictures tomorrow with some cool new bits and bobs. Presently my SME 3009 is having a holiday up in Glasgow and is been rewired with silver, having new uprated bearings fitted and, a RCA conversion and a lovely new tonearm ground wire made up. I can't reall do much more now until this arrives. I do have a modifcation to make to the plinth to accomodate the newly modded 3009 but that can wait until I get the arm back. My new slider counterweight has arrived from Steve, THANKS STEVE! Finally, this things crops up from Bulgaria.
A new idler wheel! I have an after market AudioSilente idler wheel fitted to my 401. I have tried the AudioSilente idler wheel in my 301 and it didn't sound as good as the original so out it came. Now, do I purchase this as a thing to play around with over Xmas? I'm not really sure. I will have a think about this over the weekend. As ever stay tuned...

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT Ah back to my old Sunday night routine of a little whiskey, a little Jazz and a 301 update . I've been wanting to get my 3009 properly setup for ages and after a little time I decided to get cracking. I've already detailed what's going to be done to the 301 but I thought I'd take a few pictures, so here goes. This picture shows the preferred silver litz rewire product. You can also see my custom made (by myself) IPE tonearm base. I found some silver litz cartridge wires and my new pride and joy a Grace F9E and a brace of head shells. This picture shows the 3009 with the Grace F9E mounted and the preferred head shell, the Orsonic, widely regarded as one of the best you can buy. Cartridge wires are fine silver to match the silver litz rewiring. Watch you can't see if the WBT RCA modification I also made for the 3009 . The latest "stable" of carts. SPU's, DECCA's and MM's. The M55e sits in a magnesium and Panzerholz wooden body, I've never tried this combo before, I do have a JICO SAS/B stylus to play around with over Xmas, I also have MONO stylus (currently mounted in the M55e). So lots of fun to be had over Xmas.
Finally, two sets of weights, the original SME and a custom pair made by Steve of Magna audio. Having both sets should enable easy configuration bewteen vintage MM's and heavy SPU's. Now, looking to the future, I'll probably bond the IPE tonearm mount to the bamboo plinth but that's a job for another day. Presently the tonearm board will be kept in place with four threaded rods with nuts and washer, not ideal but OK and sonically more than adequate. The future of the 301 will then be evaluated over the Xmas period. I may go down the route of a new Idler wheel in the new year, and then maybe I won't! I'll probably make a Ipe or Panzerholz plinth for the 301 but that's maybe the big project of 2025. As ever stay tuned...

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT!
No pictures tonight, just some thoughts. I've not recieved my 3009 back yet but my thoughts have already started to think about upgrades and possiblt a third tonearm for the 3001. I'm thinking maybe a dedicated valve mono phonostage and possibly a SUT for the MONO cartridges. I'd possibly go for a MONO 12" Bockrand tonearm but this is a big NO-NO for me due to the problems and amount of time it seems to purchase and deliver one of these tonearms. I also started to look at dedicated MONO phonostages and have probably opened a real can of worms. I don't know if I'm ever going to upgrade from Ortofon MONO as I think this seems to be the sweetspot for me, so potentially I might try another 3012 or even go for another tonearm altogether, maybe a different brand! I know that Ortofon produce a MONO SUT for the current MONO SPU's, so this might be worth a try as well. I will have to make a mountable outrigger for my latest plinth design, again, a bit of fun should I decide to go down the three arm route. Going down the three arm route means my 3009 could just be used for vintage MM's and this would also stop me having to faff around changing headshells. Expensive but you only live once! Another option is to forsake the option of a specific MONO only phonostage and just simply use the second input into my EAR 834 clone and a "Y" spliiter to create MONO. I have a MONO switch installed on the EAR834 so this could be a cheaper alternative. Decisions, decisions!
I'm thinking that there is probably (for the time being) not really a great deal left that I can do to this 301. A new idler wheel for the far east is a possibility. A new plinth design which will incorperate the decoupled motor design and maybe three tonearms. Each tonearm does something different, one for SPU'S, one for MONO duties and one for vintage MM experimentation. Plinth material is always a comical debate, I have considered by some Cherry wood and maybe trying something like a Shindo build but then you would also need the modded platter, bearing, tonearm and SPU for it to sound anything like a Shindo . IPE is probably going to be the way ahead should I undertake such a task. Working with IPE or Panzerholz isn't difficult but you do need specific tools which can handle the hardness of these materials, so you have to factor in the expense associated with this task. Such a task may results in a plinth which could be enstage with respects to material selection.
Stay tuned!

Have you had chance to fire up the P77 yet? Not yet! I've not had chance to get the thing mounted yet and I would like to try it on my 3009!
