I like a change now and then - you may have noticed that.
I agree it's a very different sound.

Thats interesting Jerry, how do you find a change of sond from the iron fist in a velevet glove to the realtive dryness of the Ayre? Hmm, a curious question. It doesn't sound dry to me, just clear and controlled. It needs a while after turn on to get rid of some emphasis and graininess in the treble, and for the dynamics to loosen up, but after that it just sounds excellent to me. But it's only been here since yesterday, so I'm sure I need longer to delve deeply into its sound. But it's all good so far. Could be one of those devices that only reveals it's possible longevity in your system after listening for a few weeks. Pretty sure they have an some sort of analogue to digital volume control, so none of that Alps nastiness either. Lovely.

It's some sort of passive resistor ladder design in the volume control, I think.
It can also be put into home theatre bypass mode and just used as a power amp. Definitely looking forward to trying it with my valve preamps!

At the moment, listening to Brahms 3rd symphony with Big Girly on my lap.

Is the black thing on on the left of the picture above a shrine with food offerings below ??

Yup, it's a shrine to music. The food offerings do seem to disappear quite rapidly.

how much food is there? No wonder the cat is massive.
Mine used to get half a packet at a time. Although he did eat four or five times a day. Including a feed in the middle of the night.
I did say to him that if I could get through the whole night without eating then so could he, but it cut no ice.

Actually, she's old and skinny but there are 4 cats in all, they get through a fair amount of tucker.

What's happening to those lovely pre-amps that appear to be un-loved now?

"My" new Leak Stereo 20 power amp - actually it's very kindly on loan from a Wammer 👍 💥 And sounding as lushly gorgeous from my Conrad Johnson PV7 preamp as I had hoped. No, I'm sure it's not as accurate as the Ayre integrated, but it's a wonderfully musical and enjoyable alternative.

And JP "diceman" very kindly offered me this as a medium term loaner. I've just got back from collecting it. It is a yummy thing.

TBH there's not much stays in your place longer than the medium term mate, so that may just be enough time to get a handle on the SQ

I like the Stereo 20. Remember when you could get them for a ton-fifty? I said that wouldn't last.
I should have bought half a dozen of them, didn't have the cash back then.

12 or maybe 14 years ago I bought and sold a beautifully refurbed example for £400. It's got crazy now imo.

Yes, it's in nice condition. Also refurbed and breathed on by Graham Tricker a few years back and more recently serviced.

Obviously a man of poor taste. I bought a Tron preamp from him, and then a pair of Avant-garde Uno horn hybrid speakers. He seems to know his stuff.

His design skills are [insert your own feelings] with phono stages. Never have I seen a more [insert your own complexity] circuit for a 'hi-end' unit.

Ah well, I know nuffink about the technical side. The Tron preamp did sound very good, but it was a real bitch to stop it from humming. IIRC, I had to align it with the leylines and sacrifice a rabbit before turning it on.

I was surprised to see your wanted ad for an EL84 amp, I don't know why. I posted a link to an American one which is advertised on ebay, I had it on my watch list for some reason, read good reviews on it. What a very nice offer you received from Diceman, too hard to turn down, my only query is it ok driving your MBL's?

... my only query is it ok driving your MBL's? A mere 10wpc. Yes, I know and I understand your comment. Very few folks believe it could be enough.... until they hear it! In a much bigger room than my 12x20 feet den, then it would likely top out. But heavy rock or big orchestral, it sounds great. And I listen to such things quite loud by most folks' standards I've used the MBLs with an 8wpc t-amp and other 10wpc amps, and they were fine, too. I think they must be an even and easy load. It looks like Omicron is starting to calm down, so hopefully I'll be inviting Oli to come visit sometime soon. He can give first hand impressions.
