Had some Audio Note integrated amps here a few years back. I remember one being the OTO SE, and later a Meishu came along. Just the basic model Meishu, that retailed close to 5 grand. I believe the silver signature version is priced around 10 grand, or probably more!
None of the above never (musically) satisfy me. Sure, the midrange was pleasant enough..... but the rest was blah! We did of course use Audio Note Type J Speakers. Nice speakers, IME sounded more interesting with SS amps, lol.
Fortunately I have no desire to hear the more uppity priced AN stuff.
Personally I think AN amps are stupidly overpriced. I'd much rather lay my cash on a nice old serviced Leak Stereo 20.

I'm going to get myself an Oto Se Signature Phono when one comes up at the right price to match my AN-Ks and LP12 and G99. Lovely. As you were....

Audio Note Bah Humbug! Stupid money for gutless crap SET amps, cant stand SET things.
Different strokes, I never will get the attraction or the blind worship SET amps get.

I’ve never heard one. I do like the Snell speakers which Audio Note based their speaker on.

I heard a pair of Audio Note Conquest Silver Signature monoblocks into a Hattor Preamp and some "mummy" speakers (can't recall the name) They were horn speakers.
The amplifiers were superb.
It's not enough exposure to form an opinion on the brand as a whole but I thought the amplifier was impressive.

I've heard a few all-Audionote systems and I can see the appeal but it isn't the sound for me.

While the sound was almost impeccable in some areas, in others it was not up to the same standard, particularly the bass which didn't have the heft and slam that is important to me personally.

I've yet to hear an Audionote amp, pre amp or phono stage which I would call even barely adequate! In fact I would say they were ALL shite! How the hell they have such a following god only knows! I would take a £150 Japanese integrated over anything made by Audionote that I have heard so far. They have measured really bad as well, as reflected in the poor subjective performance.

Barely adequate ffs lol. I bet they’re shitting themselves now. They should be! Worst amp I ever heard was one of their 300B SET's. I'd have Amstrad before that amp!

I’ve removed a few posts because they were playing the man. I should’ve removed the first one at the time but hadn’t seen it until now. If someone disses something you love, don’t take it personally and please don’t make it personal. If everyone did that, I’d have been called a C#nt by every Sennheiser lover

Yep I just don't get this thing of people taking it personally at one level or another because either you don't like the same gear or, as an engineer, because I've given a technical critique of something that was pretty damning...

One thing I notice is that if you go to shows a lot of the rooms the sound is hard and a bit harsh and you don't stop around. But you can always sit for a while in the Audionote room. It's not offensive, it's pleasant to listen to, can sound quite magical with some stuff. It's terribly coloured but that's the deal, you take it or leave it.
Having The speakers right in the corners of the room really is just wrong though.

I don’t recall a technical critique I recall a barely adequate comment. If we can hear better than that, and it’s factual, I’m all ears....

I have heard their all AN dems a few times most often with Meishu. I found them very musical but ultimately coloured but not in a particularly off putting way. I've heard worse SE amps frankly. Some people like what they do but they certainly are pricey. The brief times I heard the mega expensive amps they didn't sound that different than their cheaper models. Personally I would save the money (if I could afford them) and buy a meaty relatively affordable solid state amp (which I did). They really are dependent on buying into the whole system thing with super efficient speakers. I'm sure the AN speakers stand up on their own with other amps since they are suped up Snells with ever crazy expensive components and silver wire as you go up the range. Mind bogglingly expensive for a simple two way box. If you want to try SE there are plenty affordable chinese built options from EU and and N.American companies. Doubt they will sound much different with the same valves.

Having The speakers right in the corners of the room really is just wrong though. Why do you have that opinion? Not all speakers behave the same. Toe in a Vivid Audio speaker and I realy want to stab those aluminum drivers not just think about it. The same goes in equal of not more measure for all rooms. My room has a vaulted ceiling, and it certainly is the easiest room to get decent sound easily I have ever had. With some rooms you never come right. I corner load my Cornscala Horns and the Klipsch KG 4's they just sound so mush better in the corners and no they do not bloat or boom. Move them away form the walls and they sound anemic. The Audio Notes are designed to be corner loaded, as are the Klipsch Horns & the Klipsch Cornwall = Corner/Wall, and the Voigt Corner Horn. The Heresy's I had worked very well in a corner or close to a wall, where they were no longer a bit bass shy, placing them in the corners had no ill effects on the rest of the sound in any way. I have some Wharfedale Crystal 2-30's a 2 way non vented box with a passive woofer and they shine when stuffed into a corner. The Bigger brothers the Crystal 2-40 which I also have is a rear ported 3 way and they just choke up in the corners. The La Scala can also work very well near the walls. Horns work very well when in the corners or close to a wall. Doing that certainly took the bite out of the Avant Garde Duos a friend had, the lagging bass from the active bass bin I could never get right or come to terms with. Like Martin Logans yet to her any of them where that does not bug me. He has now sold the Avant Garde's and bought Sonus Faber Amati's, those certainly would not work close to any boundaries. Another friend was battling to shift a pair of Unison Research Max 1's he took as a trade in his shop. Until he corner loaded them, he sold them within a few weeks thereafter, it was chalk and cheese, they did not shout anymore. Would I put my Vandersteens anywhere close to a wall, no not unless I was deaf, that is because they sound bloody awful if not given space. As did the B&W 805 Matrix, & the 804s but they were both pretty awful anyway.

Audionote recommend you stick them in the corners. If you see Audionote on demo they do this and it really doesn't work - at least not for me. I think the idea is to increase the low frequency extension but it just gives a load of bloat instead.

Have tried Audio Note J in corners, sounded rubbish! Couple feet away from the walls and they sound good. But this is my experience though.

You’re dead right. I’ve had Js and Ks. They need space. I’ve never heard any conventional speaker sound anything other than awful near a corner. Max said you could use Glastonbury’s there and they were awful. Roy said you could use Elas there and they were terrible too. To me it’s just marketing to suck in folk with small rooms.

Even speakers designed for wall placement (according to maker) in my experience should be at least 12" from a wall and can't see any being optimal close to a corner other than the big Klipsch models. You get more bass close to the wall when these are properly designed but lose air with reduced soundstage depth. I think the thing with AN is they work close to a back wall rather than require being well out into a room such as Harbeth. Having said that PQ's ultra expensive system uses speakers in the corners.

Yeah mine were incredible in my second room. Hopeless in the first one but I’m so glad I persevered. I’d have another pair tomorrow because they were very special.

My issue with smaller rooms is that the mid bass can often be a problem with smaller speakers as well as low bass with larger ones. The tautness (damping) of the bass drivers is vital for compromised positions too I think. One area I think, where many half-decent active speaker systems would be less of an issue due to better 'quality' of bass instead of the boomy drone exhibited by many speakers these days masquerading as 'bass.'
