It struck me whilst tweaking vta and tracking force yesterday, A lot of what I like about vinyl comes from the fine tuning of the sound. Small adjustments in vta and tracking force really can alter to all balance. Then we have the individual character of cartridges.
You can't do that with CD other than choosing a player or DAC that takes your fancy. Maybe this lack of ability to add your own flavour is why lots of folk dislike CD or like it less tan vinyl. I think that's the case with me.

It's the reason I like CD. Just put it in and enjoy, no fretting over VTF or tracking force or anti-skate or the mat or stylus wear or a million other things.

For a so called audiophile to abandon the ultimate tweaking format seems like another good man/lady lost to me. The satisfaction of getting a cartridge to sing. The thrill of taking home that first pressing. The ecstasy of shifting the turntable a yard and the sound changing. The sheer hypnotism of watching that slab go round and round while you jig along to a Beatles song that you truthfully know is on the only format it should ever be heard on ! Best of all , it makes me smile and move. I've spent 20 years trying to enjoy digital under all its guises. I did blind tests and got advised by a good dealer to stay with records because every time a digital track was played my feet stopped tapping. Not only me , the missus had the same reaction. Add far as the much vaunted 'ritual' . Forget it. I do not like the faff of putting records on ! If digital matched it emotionally I would have a good digital system without a moments hesitation. Im going to get a few hackles up here but it's just honesty. I think a lot of 'music lovers' who have gone digital have simply been swayed by convenience. Worse .... they've forgotten the sound of music they used to have. Another point .... It can't be very satisfying to be an audiophile when the kids outside the Spar are listening to an iPhone giving out 99.9% of the quality of their beloved Spotify streamer system at home and 99.9% better than their CD player. Vinyl roolz ! Repent and be prodigal sons . I'll kill the fattied Koetsu ! . . . There ya go. I'll play it as it should be played...... I'm not renting a computerised imitation from the billionaires. image uploading site

Plug and play, best thing that ever happened to vinyl play back was T4P.
To old to mess about, time and my patience is short. Not getting into the vinyl digital debate, do not care, have both, play both, is one better than the other do not care, as long as I can enjoy the music that is all that matters.

You Just have got into it. Jumped in with both feet by the looks of it. But it's not a dispute for me. I'm Just giving a personal opinion. I'm right though obviously.

Whatever, if you are happy then so am I.
Eyes have never been the same at close distance since cataracts were fixed. Long distance bloody perfect, they do not react to changes in light well takes time for them to adjust. So unless I want to destroy my players I leave them alone.
Been listening to vinyl since before you were born, the records I bought as a kid are older than you.
I never gave it up when digital came on the scene. I get where you are coming from. Now stop preaching like a fellow with a Man Tail.
I have managed to get my systems to sound very similar whether it be vinyl or digital. I like it that way.
Did I tell you I still listen to cassette's, have 4 decks, they sound okay, not great just okay. Do not care, I have too many tapes with too much music I like too get rid of them.

I used to record from vinyl to metal Cassettes. Sounded great. You do make a good point , though more than a little condescending. I suppose most vinyl aficionados are now of an age where convenience is an essential rather than a preference.

No metal tapes, although I must agree they do sound better, but in keeping with my reputation; no tight ass worth his salt would go to the extra expense. Never recorded on Dolby friggen hate it it cocks up the sound. Unless used in the car it gave the bass and treble a boost when played back on a non dolby car player

Dolby was a mess weren't it ? Like burying the dam thing in a bucket of sand. I recorded onto metal purely for sound quality. They were expensive though. I think I was paying about ÂĢ5 apiece for the best TDK's in the early 80's. You could get two LPs on a C90 though. Ace for the Walkman !

Never liked Compact Cassette, I thought the sound was compromised even on the best tapes and using decent machines.
My MiniDisc deck was a revelation by comparison, it made great recordings. I still have it.

Yep the world is going that way. Makes sense. Booze is far more dangerous, but that's legal and socially acceptable.

Bozze turns most into aggressive assholes. Weed has the opposite effect on most. If I did not smoke it when dealing with my sister I would have killed the crazy bitch a long time ago.

One of my bosses used to smoke cannabis daily in his office and the smell permeated all round the store - we had coppers as customers too... The more he consumed, the more paranoid he became.

I work with a 45 year old bloke. He's sound enough. He just spray cleans the aircraft blades before they get acid etched . It's not brain surgery. Which is just as well because he's smoked dope for 30 years and he's basically a jibbering fool. It takes him about an hour to get a sentence out . Plenty of workmates have known him since school and all have said it's the dope that's pickled his napper ! He says he smokes it to release stress .... so how come he's the most stressed out 'dude' I've ever met ? I smoked it myself occasionally for years and in my opinion it's done me no harm.. But that stuff fucks you up if you do too much just like booze does. I know the ganga fans say it's safer than alcohol and in some ways it is. But it can still do you in if you overdo it. Stick to frequent and lengthy masterbation is my motto. It relieves stress brilliantly. ð

Now I'm only talking about my own experience and am not saying it's true of everyone but I smoked almost constantly from the age of 14 until I was 30 and achieved next to F*** all apart from owning a killer record collection. After giving up I now am 10 years from the end of a mortgage, own a little flat in Spain out right, I've travelled right through India from Kashmir down to Sri Lanka and have been to Afraica, South East Asia and the West Indies and am not far of being reasonably secure. Having said that I'm hoping to semi retire next year to my place in Spain where it's legall to grow up to four plants so I'm thinking of growing some low THC weed to cook with and to just take the edge off.. On the subject of drinking not all people who enjoy a drink are violent nutters and I've met plenty of younger guys who smoke strong weed and are both paranoid and angry and don't mind a punch up so that's a flawed arguement. I enjoy a drink as does my brother and most of the older guys I work on site with and none of us are violent and turn into arseholes after a few.
Most of the guy's in their 20's and 30's at work smoke all day and believe me they're not chilled out hippies the drug of choice for most of those guys is cocaine it's perfectly normal for them to go out Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the gear, drinking like fish and smoking copious amounts. The drug taking of my youth involved a few E's, some hash and some good music but it's a very different world today. My view is the War on drugs is lost and was a hopeless, hypocritical waste of time anyway. Class B drugs should be legal and possesion of class A's a non criminal offence treated as a health issue and help and intervention offered where needed. Dealers of Crack, Heroin and all class A's should be treated very harshly IMO..
Anyway back to the thread for me records played on a decent record player with a decent amp and speakers just sounds so much better and so all the faffing around is worth it and as engine says can be enjoyable. Streaming services like Tidal are fantastic for discovering new music, trying before you buy the record and internet radio which I Love but I've had Naim streamers, Chord 2Qute and Hugo Dacs with PSU's, fancy cables and numerous very good streaming transports and though good they don't come close to a decent record player. At the moment I have a Chromecast Audio connected to a MF V DAC/V PSU and it's great for casual and background listening but if I want toi sit and get right into the music it's vinyl every time..

I've never touched drugs, never smoked a cigarette and generally don't drink alcohol. The only way I'd cbsider any of the able is if I needed pain relief and normal mess weren't working.

What type are they? No idea chucked some seeds in the garden and in a pot, very professional. My luck they will be males. We used to chuck seeds in the pot plants at work back in the 80's, used to drive the boss batty.
