Have tried many from cork leather, felt, etc. and those Acromat things that scratched my records. They do make a difference. Is it better is it worse? I have always reverted to the ones supplied by the manufacturer they just seem to be the best compromise, And I am sick and tired of listening to differences, and messing about, I just want to listen to the music. Plus what difference does it realy make, if it sounds good it is good. I have a pile of different ones stached away in a cupboard. This one however is an exception I realy want one so badly.

I have always liked the Funk Firm Acromat. It replaced the felt one on my LP12 (since sold) and found it to be a good improvement.

I've tried
Achromat, Leather mat, Felt mat, Bare acrylic, Audio Technica suction Mat,
The pinnacle was the Tenuto. Obviously, being a heavy beast, it isn't a universal recommendation

Those Foam pads on the Hydraulic platter are perfectly safe. I had John Michell make me an extended spindle on the platter retainer so i could fit an additional thin glass platter to sit on top of the original platter weights with felt mat. Made no difference what so ever sound wise apart from being able to clamp down warped records successfully with a clamp. The B&O ones are a bit iffy cos they are a hard nylon plastic. arg'oo'w = Argue

I had a glass turntable mat many years ago. It was shite. Now I just use the one that came with the turntable.

Tenuto for my Idlers. I did use the original Garrard 301 mat for ages as it seemed to be just as good as anything else. I love the Crystal Audio mat on my 1210.

Would it be possible to use a Tenuto on a 1210 and a CA on a Garrard ? Thanks. I don't know if I'd put a 5mm gunmetal plattermat on a 1210 in all honesty but I have seen them used on a 301 and a 401 However, there was a MK1 tenuto which was about 2mm and a Rubato platter Matt, made of copper that I reckon would be a better choice. It can be a struggle to find them though

Went through the whole trying out mats things on the modding my 1210 journey - Too many to mention including The Speed, felt, Acrylic, very expensive Oyaide-MJ12, Achromat, you you name it, tried it. Always went immediately back to the original 3mm softer stock rubber mat as supplied with my 1210 - Just always sounded right compared to the others which just changed things, dulled, sheened, glared, overly dampened or otherwise, just never sounded natural like the stock mat. It'll be the same with my SP-10 - stock mat, no question as I know it will be the best, most natural platform for me and the music. Have read others say the same - each to their own of course, I know what sounds right to my ears

A lot of people find the same with various turntables Robbie. The Lencos and Thorens standard mats are liked best by many owners on the respective turntable. I found the same with mine. Garrards seem to benefit from mat changes, as does my stalwart Toshiba SR-370.

I used the Reso-mat on a few decks - worked really well with some, not so good on others. Worth a try at the price. They even make a special size one to fit inside the platter rim of a Techie 1200. I liked it on my 1210. No good if the platter needs damping, though - the ultimate there that I found was a French Spectra Dumpa mat; very heavy, thick and a bit sticky! Needed fairly regular cleaning. ... "In France the Spectra turntable mat was introduced. It consisted of 3 layers of different kinds of polymer, each with specific properties. The surface provided a firm grip on the record because it was sort of 'sticky'. A record was not easily lifted up. This mat provided a remarkable transient response which was more situated in the upper regions as with a felt mat than in the fundamental frequencies as in harder rubber mats or the acrylic mats. The diameter of the Spectra was too large, 300 mm instead of about 280 mm. Records with a thick groove guard were not always optimally supported." That from an interesting areticle on mats - www.soundfountain.com/amb/ttmat.html

I once used an Axmister mat on a staircase..... And am delighted to report the mat outlasted the Oak Staircase.
I am tempted to cut out a wedge for my Techie but fear the torque might be too much for it......
Discuss.
