First the Yamaha CDX series, the bottom of the range CDX 396 is one of the best budget players I have listened to. I have two of them. If you get a chance and see a second hand Proton CDP do not pass it by. Built like a tank with a very non fatiguing presentation. Have had this for years, and actually managed to find an as new remote for it a few months back. Proton AC 422. This is a very obscure one, it sounds very very good, has such an excellent loading mechanism it looks like it belongs on a high end player. Picked it up for a song as good as new, bought it out of curiosity and was blown away with how good it sounds. (looking for a remote) needle in a hay stack. Samsung. CD 44R

Always bought Sony machines as a safe bet. Had others from Mission, Arcam, Micromega, Meridian but could never get on with em..

I have an old Rotel rcd965BX discrete, always enjoyed it but the drawer now squeaks (and I have a lumpy TEAC VRDS these days) The boss has an Arcam Alpha 5+ which is a weightier sound than the Rotel but the drawer cogs have all disintegrated

I haven’t heard a cheap player I’ve liked. Cheapest I’ve found I can tolerate is the original Rega Planet. Next up, the Naim CD3, CD3.5, CD5 and CD5x. Best players have been Copland CDA622, Naim CDI, CDX and Sonneteer Byron. Some ok 2 box combos with decent DACs too. Otherwise I haven’t liked the rest.

E-mailed me to say he'd tried it in his own system and it was as good as his high-end player. Can't recall what that was but it was a few grand. I use a 790 now mostly. Cost me fifty quid. No way would I ever buy another expensive CD player. I've come to the conclusion that you're not getting anything extra for your money.

Some of those early Denon players were suppose to be ok. I had a 1520 which wasn’t bad, but not close to what I have now. I also had a 720 as a second player when I had a CDI. It couldn’t compete but it WAS enjoyable in its own right. Just lacking a bit of weight.

Anyone tried the Sony CDP-S1 from the La Scala lifestyle system? Richard Dunn seemed to think it was up there with the Sont CDP-R1 and DAS R1 he used to have. They are supposed to be really good.

Anyway he tried the Sony CDP-S1 from the lifestyle system? Richard Dunn seemed to think it was up there with the Sont CDP-R1 and DAS R1 he used to have. They are supposed to be really good. No but I''ve had a good listen to the R1 combo. yes it is very good. I think RD only had the player, not the DAC. I've got a Pioneer DVDV757, universal player. I had a bloke come round and he says 'WTF? This is your digital source?' Then I played him something and he couldn't believe it. Someone else had a good listen then takes a look at the kit and spies the 757. Said he could not believe that is what he'd been listening to. £150 new. It's all about the amplification, not the CD player, is the conclusion I've come to. Sure you can eke out a bit extra with discrete power supplies and so on. But even a cheapy will sound very good through a properly sorted system.

Still got my '930' UK spec machine stuck in the back room collecting dust. Was using a '520ES' machine from the 80's up until recently. Was a better sounding machine but the '930' Sony fixed lazer mech with puck is a dream to use.. All the same clicking a Mouse seems to be a lot more of a dream to operate

I've still got a few classics stashed away- a 555ES, a CD54 and one of these:

Sadly although the Teachy '770' was one of the best sounding CD players i used the Mech gave up. The onboard DACs sound great

These do show up on occasion and are very fine sounding. Usually C.A.C. Sound is warm / analogue like, think Copland's and Unison Research. via Imgflip Meme Generator

One of the things I hate about more modern players, aside from the blue displays, is that they don't have anything like enough buttons on the fascia. I like to have direct track access. My 554 is good in that respect, that even has little LEDs set into the buttons. These are the important things to look for in a cd player.
