Sorry for the daft question.
What prices are classed as mid level?

Well if you look at the high end gear.
A 10k system would be good starting point.....!!!

I haven’t a clue these days. Back in the 80s it was the £299-£350:price bracket. Think Linn Axis (£313) Audiolab 8000a (£320) and MA852 or Epos ES14 (£295 but quickly rose to £350).

Yep it ain't as cut and dry as that.....a decent sounding system could be put together if you source the Chinese gear and the likes. But I personally could not live with the tag.....I won't aspire to the high end but my kit has to look / feel nice as well as sound superb.
Horses for courses.

Mid level vs High End, after attending a demo I fire up my Wharfedale's and the second hand amp and CDP. And think WTF, why are these tossers trying to sell this expensive kit when it sounds no better than my cheap Sh#t and a lot of times worse. Very little high end kit impresses me, things like entry level Elacs and Wharfedale's sound as good as most of the expensive stuff. High End speakers you are paying for the build and finish not the sound quality.

Well when I started back in the 1980s, budget was components around a ton, mid level was about £300 each and top level was about a grand for each bit. If you wanted to pay more than a grand a component you could but there wasn't a massive amount of choice.
Now it's all to hell as you've got loads of options for any component well into 6 figures, and budget wise you can get digital gear, amps and speakers from China for less than in the 1980s.
On the plus side we've now got a massive second hand market on the internet instead of a few dozen ads at the back of the mags and the (mostly) tat you used to see in the local paper's classifieds.
