those lasers they sell on eBay are mostly (i.e 'all') fakes. They might work for a short while. Ask me how I know. Getting a donor machine is better idea.
The Linn will just be a tricked up Philips or Panasonic probably.

But that laser won't be exclusively used in the Linn player. If you can find what other players used that particular laser, a donor machine could be had for way less than £200.

Well I put power thorough and the CD motors not spinning, so it's not just the laser. I only want it for the CD player really although the amp works fine.

Today I am obsessed with Beck's "Morning Phase" album.
Had it for years but only really listened to it in sporadic single track form. Start to finish, it's a belter!

Today, checked out the dentist chair for an early appointment, nice chap good medical skills, pretty painless. The last few weeks have been transfering part of music collection to a new server, so far 240Tb have been installed. plenty of music has been playing to!

Yeah it was a good year for music actually, War On Drugs, St Vincent, Jamie XX, Alt-J all had decent albums out. Just watch the volume dial at the beginning of track 2 as track 1 is really quiet. A very dynamic album. Are you vinyl of Flac?

Unless most of that is uncompressed high Rez that's more music than you could listen to.... 😂

No its all Wav, its stil only just a quarter of the total collection, built a new server and just trying out out some new data moving techniques by using a bank of NVIE memory modules to ' house' the files from the SSD before playback is initated. Proving to be quite enlightening, however as also the power supply is playing a large part in the performance curves. split bewteen building a 120V QP2 for an American friend and testing a new DC filter pack I've been deleveloping for the motherboard<>PCIE<>NVIE placements

misterc That means you will have 1000Tb's of music and stuff, how do you manage to search through that and what music management system do you use?

Not roon as I like my SQ just right, although Roon is spot on for this and was what it was built for.
I wrote a linux based access programme for basic database searches & metadata aquisition, and use the Conductor app for ' in use' playback GUI.

Absolutely super work Tony, forgive my computer ignorance, I was unsure if any of the app's would be able to cope with that amount of music.

I'm excited to get a listen, but not till tomorrow now. I have most of his albums and all are good imo, but my favourite has to be 'Guerolito' (which is a remix version of 'Guero'). And not forgetting 'Odelay', which is probably his most accessible album. An intelligent and talented artist, and much underrated imo. Edit: looking at his discography it would appear I no longer have most of his stuff - he's been a busy boy since the last one I bought ('The Information'). Where do the years go to? I'll be interested to hear what he's up to these days.

Well so far its working fine with 16Tb on board files and a modest further 40Tb I have on a customer sever I'm working on a the moment, think of it as large swap files or playlists that just happen to be 8Tb each. Which in all fairness more music than most people would listen to around 20K albums @ red book on those drives, the server has more space yet to fill.
It depends on your NVIE O/S size as to how it stores/lists and grants access to your files. After all they are just low powered, small format PC mother boards. Not tried the Aurender with anything more than dual on board 8TB SSD's. That maybe the sticking point for local storage.

A quick bite size tech piece this evening, I've been working on some amps recently and I have come across one of ther most common grips in audio why do my speakers buzz/hum ? Ladies and gentleman welcome to the group loop side show, from mild to wild, simple to more frustrating than a wobat's jockstrap hunt in the pitch black with a 2 candle powered old skool touch . Well below is the absolute classic big old speaker hum which remains constant at 1/4 volume and above. This biys and girls is the quintessential group loop in all its glory, this time on a pre amplifier. When ever you plugged this beastie into any power amp, the resultant issue was pure umittegated hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm utterly deep joy. The investigation has revealed yes indeed we have a ground loop OR incoming power line fault (however I have discounted this due to the various set up's I have worked through beforehand) Below is a scope trace & spectrum analyser plot of the offending culprit in all of its demonic splendour (Boo, Hiss, Swizz) you can clearly see the the 50Hz offender (fundamental frequency) and the various harmonics leading on up the frequency spectrum. Note also the amount of voltage ripple (noise variations) which is around base voltage measurement, while not huge at all (vertical resolution is @ 10mV per division) its the harmonic content which is the cause of the speaker humming This represents a move from an average baseline of around -108dBm up to a peak of -58dBm which is an increase of almost 50% of the noise floor. These measurement where taken from the RCA output sockets with no inputs connected at all.The volume control set at 30% of maximum with the GROUND LIFT switch in the OFF position. The second image is with the GL switch in the 'ON' position note the reduction in vertical noise on the scope voltage trace, but virtually zero difference on the Spectrum plot of the harmonic noise! Just thought some of you may be interested in 'seeing' in real time what one of these bug bears actually looks like in the frequency domain in real time. Also note that given no inputs are connected then recorded freqeuncy is over 500Khz so if its only going to get 20Khz where does this come from lol

Doesn't strike me as a ground loop Tony, more of poor design for the power supply with so many harmonics of 100Hz.
