Well Tempered Labs Versalex, Charimsa Audio MC-1 cartridge. This one left a lasting impression on me, I could never could afford one. Anyway it is pointless as most of my vinyl dates back to my school days in the 60's.

This deck is apparently cheaper than the top Linn LP12 (!!!!!!!! if so) and according to my pal why worked at KJ until recently, it set subjective standards for vinyl he thought unachievable. Even the cheaper model (a mere twenty grand or so) had a sense of utter stability you only usually hear with digital or master-tape sources. he abandoned vinyl thirty years ago, but this deck and its sibling totally blew him away.. Derek Jenkins (R.I.P.) presents the Kronos -
Just to lower the tone, here's a dem of the deck I use. Do remember that mics, even good ones, always have a boosted high frequency end and my own 701 is all but silent when cycling - Plonk a Notts Analogue Spacemat on top of the stuck-on original and add a little soft label-area support and you have a Rega 6 competitor but without the belt drive (the Rega arm's better though but the end result isn't so different)
Below the Dual that started it all for me. These again need urgent but not expensive work now to prevent a serious mechanical failure. I lent mine to a friend who lent it to his son who split from his wife and emigrated. I suspect the deck is now in landfill somewhere - white plinth too -
Lastly, an icon Andr'e may well remember. There's so much 'wrong' in audiophool terms, but I love the one I have and it 'sounds' rather better than you'd think and is a fabulous conversation piece - They ALL need stripping down and servicing now due to the 'Garrard Glue' syndrome (solidified grease). Rather than engineer a quiet mech as most Duals are, Garrard used a O ring around the lower platter hub to cushion the geared cam when rotating during the cycle. Not sure of the one below has had this replaced as the melt away over the years. Oh, and the damped lowering works on my Zero 100 which is fitted in a more trad looking Wyndsor plinth with 'loose' cover (I believe Wyndsor was Mike Creek's Dad's business in the 70's.)
I'll crawl back under my stone now...

Voyd Reference was breathtaking. With the deck I have now, I have no interest in seeking anything else.

Mine had the drop down front panel and the cover with pivoted sliding front. I should have been more assertive when I lent it to my mate and specifically told him I wanted it back when he had no more use for it. best laid plans and associated bullshit That's why I bought the 701 (for fifty quid) thirty years ago - it's now worth a few hundred I think, but I miss the 1229.. White for me is no good, as it'd be scratched, marked or faded too easily as white can and does...

I was just reading about this deck a couple of days ago. It’s getting some very positive comments, I like the styling too. Makes Regas look a bit boring.

Heard it now a couple of times at shows, I was also very impressed. I would like to hear it side by side with a Rega P8.

The MoFi is a plastic feeling thing with rather crude tonearm. It's way overpriced in the UK in my opinion and the whole feel of it is cheap 'pro-ject' level, let alone a Rega *anything* these days I think. The lid is ghastly and the general 'feel' of the one I played with screams 'low rent' to me. Trouble is, Rega hide their far superior engineering inside where you can't see it (tonearm pipe design and construction and the bearings both arm and main) and the now skeletal construction of their best turntables makes it look like you're getting nothing for your money. That Mofi thing would also be beaten I'm sure by an AceSpace with arm and whatever nice £300-ish cartridge you'd care to fit to it. Sadly with Tom Fletcher passed for so many years, this little company does nothing to promote itself and the finish isn't to the standards of German and other oil-rig types costing thousands more. So sad really.

I love my original wooden plinth Rega Planar 2 bought in 1978, done the motor mod, and fitted an RB 250.
Like my Klipsch KG4's bought in 86 you will have to pry both out of my cold dead hands.
Still both mint as new.

Strange that is, cause the mofi has just replaced his Rega P6. And pissed it on SQ. OH WELL.

This one (Origin Live Resolution Classic with OL Silver arm) left a lasting impression as well.... Though for entirely different reasons. via Imgflip Meme GeneratorIt was the biggest piece o Sh#t hifi I ever owned....even surpassing my LP12.

I bet the cartridges are/were different, as the Mofi comes with something of its own. That will change the sound so much all on its own.
OH WELL - you won't believe a word of it so I'll retire from this one as I can't sit any of you lot down and do some dems to back up the stuff I come out with.

They were notorious for drifting speed. I had a Silver mk2 arm that I liked, but the decks and motor kits oook really poor.

Rega 3 and above are decently built. I’ve just been looking at new kit today and it’s all plasticky Sh#t,

I haven't really, but I had a play with it and thought it cost under a grand! Looks like a bloody toy in the flesh - yellow exposed belt and old Naim-style power switch and the arm has design faults in the yaw-creating vertical bearings shared with many other exalted models for some reason (ease of manufacture I suspect). It's almost double the price here too, than it is in the US I believe. All adds up, sorry... I'd rather have a Technics, save some dosh and grin from ear to ear!

I'd far sooner have my Toshiba SR-370 than a Techie. It sounds better!
Amazing that you can still pick one up for less than £200 really, it's right up there for sound quality.

The new Techies are quite a bit better than the old ones which are let down by the arm. I'm guessing Dave was talking about the new ones.

I said I wouldn't return to this and look what I've bloody done...
I didn't take it when a local store was closing down due to retirement, but I was offered a techie 1210 tonearm (just the pipe and bearings). I couldn't believe how lightweight and 'ringy' it was, but not a problem if you used the headshell style it came with and say, an AT or Ortofon MM cartridge (Audio Origami used to offer a foam fill for the pipe which may have calmed it down). trouble is, Kessler shoved a Lyra in one he had to try and from then on, the deck's capabilities were being pushed too far and all the subsequent add-ons came along to try to take it higher, some tweaks with success I believe. My SL1500 tonearm pipes are much more 'solid when taken apart and a Supex 900E sounded wonderful in one, although I added a cork mat to the stock one to get the arm level as height was fixed.
The new models have a different old-new motor style with overlapping magnetic 'lobes' driving the platter as my Pabst/Dual EDS1000 motor does. I dare say the isolation has been looked at further too, although I'm unlikely to ever get to use or 'hear' one playing records.

Well, I love my SL1200 mk2. It is not standard anymore as it has a load of Funk Firm upgrades, but these take it to another level in my opinion. I have the FX1200 arm, spin bearing, strata platter and Bo!ng feet.
I don’t feel the need to change it, as it does everything I want. This is the first turntable I have owned, so I have little experience of others apart from my brother’s RP3, cheap Akai and whatever my father had when growing up.
“OldPinkMan” was impressed by my modded SL1200, and he has tried far more turntables than me. Sure, there are better looking and sounding turntables out there, but I won’t spend the money trying to find one.

Yeah once you change the arm and get rid of the rubber mat it's a super deck is the old 1200.

I'd be interested in a step by step to improve it. To be honest though I love it as it is. I tried an achromat and rubber feet and an isolation platform . None of them improved it. Changed it but not for the better. I have a rewired Johnny 7 RB300 and an zalphason Xenon doing nothing . Would it be worth it ? Cheers , Cagey

An arm change is certainly worth it, but Rega on a SL1200 is awkward. I used to have a J7 AO RB300, and it was difficult to use. A picture with a rather heavy DL-103 on the end of it. link

It was designed to a price. A low one at that, and one of the best changes you can make is a decent arm, or some modifications to the original.
