Something i notice is people trying to get that so called synergy Swapping & changing CD players till they are happy with the combination [Not that they ever will be].. Dont you think it would much easier using a computer to play music. All you require is a streamer to by pass the internal sound card. What happens when your CD player packs up, I can imagine its the end of the world, going around in circles trying to find that synery all over again.. Don't you think it would be much easier using a computer, every Computer is the same cos there is no sound emanating from the device remember it is basically a file selector! Why on earth would you want piles of CD's in a collection [Pig Ugly clutter] Dont you think it would be better keeping thousands of albums on a Hard drive + Back up. Quicker to access your music + you dont need to clutter your house up with silver disc crap. Box in the loft. O i forgot it must be everything that is required in a file base system robs people of their street cred as an enthusiast.

CD players are more reliable than a domestic file server. You have at least 3 things that could fail in a typical setup - the PC/NAS, the router and the streamer/receiver. And for many people they are voodoo. And that's before the software which is also voodoo, but a different flavour.
I work with computers, I like them and I have a PC with a load of ripped CDs on it.... I use Plex to stream them to a chromecast audio. Well I used to. It was so much easier to use Spotify or the CD player that I no longer bother.

A computer is what we're using in the main system, no going back now.

I built a silent PC with a decent sound card with DAC built in (Asus Essence STX II). This feeds my pre amp or external DAC directly. I cannot tell the difference between the two methods.

I did mention Back up, but never mentioned a NAS [Something else where people go where i totally have no need for] Never ever have i had a PC fail yet & never ever had an Hard dive fail. I can safely say ive had three CD players fail tho. However i think you failed to read the opening of the post.

I can safely say ive had three CD players fail tho. However i think you failed to read the opening of the post. I read the full post, I just didn't answer the bit about swapping kit for synergy (which I agree with by the way, CD players make a tiny difference in my view, Speakers and room are the thing to get right). My response was simply that for the majority of people, an HDD based system is daunting. You need somewhere to store the files (normally a PC or a NAS). Something to send those files across the network and provide the interface (again, the PC or NAS), then there will be a router to get those files onto the network and provide a way for the controller to work and typically another box at the far end to receive the files and squirt them into the hifi (the receiver). Many people go for a NAS for 2 reasons. Firstly, they don't need a full PC so a NAS is a more power efficient/smaller way to manage the front end, secondly, a decent NAS will have RAID hard drives so will be more robust than a PC. You WILL have an HDD fail. Its a statistical certainty unless you throw them away every 12 months, and even then, you could still get unlucky. Streaming is normally simpler because you don't need the PC/NAS, but the internet is still flaky enough at times (especially with teenagers nicking all the bandwidth) that I get drop outs which drive me nuts in the middle of a song.

The first Hard drive i filled with music was about 7 years ago. That is still working now with no problems. I was kinda on about a music system for a house & house only. With the very simplistic way of doing this like plugging a Hard rive into a PC USB thats it.
I am on about Swapping a single CD player for a single file based player which is the computer. Not the confusion that people like to employ with such things.
