We've all seen it. Something that really wasn't special in its day that now looks prety naff yet is starting to fetch big bucks. What have you spotted that you wouldn't give house-room to?
LS3/5A Transcriptors Hydraulic reference Lots of old nondescript Jap amps Linn LVX Rega R200 (sorry but I think it's a POS) Old Tannoys

The R200 is actually one of the best 'SME style' detachable shell arms out there, despite it's scaling down for the Planar decks. It's beefed up sibling in the Pioneer PL71 is superb. Bias belts can now be obtained. I have one and it ain't going anywhere - it carried my Decca Microcanner when I had a TD125 here and it sounded great - the 125 went for financial reasons only!
Any Linn and Naim stuff is too expensive new or old (there, I've said it!) All of it pretty naff at the time although we were brainwashed to ignore it
Any speakers loosely connected to the Bee Bee Cee however tenuous the link - only a handful are worthy of attention and they're all knackered now (BC1's for example)
Dynavector cartridges have shot up in price way outside their abilities in my book compared to 1980's prices.
Many jap direct drive decks.
P.S. Have you ever spent time with a Hydraulic Reference? Fit a period Fluid arm and Empire 1000ZE/X or ADC 26 and it makes for a fine period piece. the later Electronic Reference wasn't bad at all and fed back les than many revered direct drive models.

I saw a pair the other day with a stupid price tag. Obviously they are more "collectible" than I thought. They look about £20 worth on a good dat

The original Maxim is the direct ancestor of all miniature two ways made since I think and when new, even the BBC took an early interest for a small basic monitor in the days before the LS3/5A. it was too variable apparently - the paper is available online if anyone wants to read it. Today, it's expensive because of what it was and I don't *think* that any other speaker this size was conceived for commercial sale at that particular time. Not sure the original Wharfedale Denton W20's were available (I've got some W20's and they're not badly balanced if not listening for fine details, as they mask too much)

I heard a rumour years ago, saying Joe Akroyd created the original Maxim. Could be wrong though!

I don't know who designed the original Maxim, but Goodmans played host to many now industry stalwarts who subsequently in the 80's designed all manner of things at many price levels (the man I knew personally was ATC's Billy Woodman who was at Goodmans in his early days*) You want to know where I get a lot of my 'stuff' from? Here's one source - I spent a lot of time at ATC in the 90's and had many lunches with clients and Billy played host and was free to chat and explain things. His speciality is heavy duty very high quality drive units. Other firms now have come up with superb performing drivers for not much money, but not then and the crap things Linn and Naim were using by then didn't even begin to come into the same ball park imo. - www.avhub.com.au/features/hi-fi/an-interview-with-billy-woodman-atc-loudspeakers-416431

I seem to recall the same thing about Joe Ackroyd and the Maxim.

I heard a rumour years ago, saying Joe Akroyd created the original Maxim. Could be wrong though! S. IT has to be true. Wiki says so: Prior to starting Royd Audio, Joe Akroyd worked for Goodmans in the early 1960s, where he contributed to the Maxim mini monitor and the Audiom and Axiom bass drivers en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Akroyd
