I just came across Rega’s 2018 price list. I’m shocked at the prices of their decks. They just don’t look like good material, value for money anymore. Maybe it’s just me being unable to think of Rega as anything other than vfm budget makers. Even things like RP6 and RP8 look overpriced for me. There’s not a lot to a Rega deck, so they just don’t look like a few grand’s worth. I know I’d never buy any of them but maybe someone newer to hifi will feel differently. I’d love to know how many they sell in the UK. www.signals.uk.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Rega-Pricelist-May-2018.pdf

Would I pay 6k for any deck?
No.
That is just daft money.

Your including a £3149 mc cartridge, other wise you get one for half price. I know your list is out of date but the new P8 is less than £1700 without cartridge which I thought was a fair price if reviews are anything to go by. As to whether £6k is daft money for any item, surely that is up to the buyer. If I won £91 million tonight (fingers crossed) on the lottery I might well spend £50k on a tt.

And I remember when it was a choice between the 2 and the 3. We dreamed of being able to afford either back when I was University (I had a Tensai, my mate had a Goodmans).
I don't think 5 grand is crazy money for a turntable providing the money has gone on some serious heavy engineering. So no belt drives for a start.
If we allow for inflation the top Rega deck would be about £1500 in 1987 money. I think a Planar 2 was £250 back then.

One of the best decks I ever heard was a Technics SL1200 built into concrete with a air floated linear tracking arm assembly attached. The Heath-Robinson-ness was terrific. But an amazing sound. Holographic imaging.

I hadn’t realised the inflation comparison was as dramatic as that though. I guess I’m still set in 80s pricing.

I still see them as basic budget decks and their more expensive ones look like tweaked cheap decks, nothing more,

The value of money has halved every 20 years in the last 40 so knock 75% off today's prices to get a rough idea of '87/'90.

I guess it will vary depending on inflation calculators, but this one suggests the following prices today for Planar 2 and 3

If I won £91 million tonight (fingers crossed) on the lottery I might well spend £50k on a tt. I'm in that draw too though! Only it's a syndicate so I'll only get just over 5 million. The shopping list is extensive but a turntable isn't on there

£91:Million! What would I buy? I really don’t know. I think I’d probably be more likely to put a large room aside and collect lots of the stuff I’ve either had or wanted from the 80s. I doubt I’d spend more than 50k and maybe a lot less.

I'd build a mansion and have systems in every room. Every room would be designed individually to accommodate the specific system.

And a purpose-built recording studio and practice rooms, let bands use it for a token donation to charity.

The entire interior would be done out like Moonbase Alpha. I'd have copies made of all the furniture and everything. There's be a travel tube between the main house and the studio. Get that Kevin McCloud bloke from Grand Designs along, see what he makes of it.
Have I done in the 90 million yet?

He'd just be coming round to do a programme on it, I wouldn't be investing in his dodgy eco-scheme. I'm not nuts! I mean the replica travel tube will probably consume as much leccy as the whole of Ethiopia each time I use it. But that's not the point. Anyway he's a good presenter. He did a great series on renaissance architecture which ofc they never repeat. And he was very fast around Top Gear test track. The most disappointing thing about these huge euro-lottery win people is that they never do anything interesting with it. If you gave me half a million now that's it for me. I'm well happy, I'm off to the Caribbean to sit on a beach, tara! - but with 90 million, then you've got a canvas to paint on, man!

Have I done in the 90 million yet? Nowhere near Macca, depending on where you buy your mansion of course, you'll have loads left to put up a few dancing poles.
