I'm in heaven -
The RC88 pictured by poster RayDunzl was incredibly gentle despite looking so tractor-like. The comments regarding rigidity related tuning is particularly interesting to me - one reason why my Garrard stash 'sound' so much better than they should by Linn thinking...
I wish I still had the 60's mags, but I'm sure the 401 motor was slightly different to the 301, as I seem to remember the 401 wasn't as happy with mains variations - long time ago now...

Yes it's a good thread. Although Garrards not my favourite decks.
You still got any Dave?

'Course I have (oh dear!). It all started in the 60's - cough, but here's the current list -
AT6/Stanton 500
60mk2 with SL motor - so it's an SL65 in all but name/Stanton 500V3, Ortofon GT, and various ceramic cartridges
Lab 80mk2/Grado F1+ (I love this deck, bought from 'Beobloke' Adam Smith. No cover so it doesn't get the use it rightly deserves)
AP76/AT120E (I love this one too and it sounds great with dull 60's orchestral LP's)
Zero 100/Ortofon VMS10e II - Surprises me every time I use it.
86SB with currently an XLM III fitted. Motor grommets not what they were, but I have it running quietly now. Platter and main bearing pretty much to Lab 80 tolerances and platter runs dead true.
These have been cycled round the workroom system from time to time in between the odd Dual or two and working on them has continued to teach me loads.

Wow - thought you might have a couple but not that many. I've never even heard of the AP76 or the 86SB.

Look 'em up on Vinyl Engine or here -
G800E is a pile of cack today (yup, I have an original) and this spotless deck can take far better. the Youtube example needs the cueing height increased a fraction as the arm 'bounces' on it's max height stop a touch when lifted. Lord he's rough with the cartridge carrier. Even I wouldn't be so cavalier (hold the tonearm while gently sliding the carrier out by the sides of the cartridge)
Here's an 86SB in need of a tweak -
The mechanism (basically the same as the AP76 but a couple of small refinements to the trip and cueing links) is all but throwing the arm up (sticky washer in the mech in need of a clean and superlube and again, the cueing height screw in the lift platform is slightly out of line with the main lifting adjustment on the arm as under auto operation, the arm bobs and weaves which it shouldn't (Garrard never provided text for adjusting this relationship properly so I've had to improvise on knowledge I gained owning, bodging and demonstrating brand new ones). Effin 'ell, how do I know all this stuff? It's not as if anyone gives a sh*t!

Anyone will give a shot when they desperately need help with one of these because googling will eventually lead them to your posts. Nobody else can give what you can, so thanks for bothering.

Used dual (not Dual) AP75's a lot for DJ work around 1968. Had Decca Derams in them feeding WEM amps/slaves and banks of 4 x 12 WEM columns. Was a good setup for the time.
