I'm using an Alpha 7 for headphone duties. Nice decent sounding player. I have no intention on tweaking it. The plain vanilla sound is good enough for me. The tone slightly reminds me of the MK1 Rega Planet CD Player.
Any digital Arcam fans on here?

The Planet directly compared to the Alpha 8SE Shane (been there and done it over the Arcam model changes at that time). We sold the Planet, Remote and Couple interconnect as a 'system' and the 8SE sold to people not wanting a lift-up loading lid.
Arcam used to tune the sound to get 5* reviews and I seem to remember how 'different' the 7SE was over the original '7.' Their better players weren't so review conscious though.

I almost bought a 9'the other day just to see what the fuss was about the Ring DAC. Is it worth the bother?

I remember the '9' as clear enough and less 'CD like' than the lower models, but was it one to want to own? Not sure there. Our then favourite £800 worth was the MF X-ray series player. A little dry sounding, but it had more musical 'heart' to it I remember. MF weren't a good company for dealers to 'deal' with, so like many others we ceased dealing with them after a comparatively short time. the early X series had some gems in it though and the stuff back then was reliable enough.

Thanks, Dave. I think I was buying into the hype about the Ring DAC. It would have to be something special for me to own it. Arcam isn't exactly a brand I'd love to see sitting in my home anyway. I'll forget it.

The heavy top-range FMJ models are really nice as they feast the eyes as well as the ears and the casework aids sonics here too for whatever reason. The two early FMJ CD payers I heard were siting sensitive for some unearthly reason, but in the yachting-sail-line suspended-shelf Something Solid racks, they could sing very musically. On a standard rack, they sounded a tad more 'ordinary.' The matching FMJ preamp seemed a little site sensitive too and as I may have mentioned before, the big power amp (AV with just two channels fitted for stereo) could sound sublime with later SBL's.

I might be talking crap, but didn't the FMJ products utilise SDS (Sound Dead Steel) in their case wok? A mate who knows mr SDS mentioned this to me, as I recall. I'm sure there was a bit of argy bargy over it,

No idea! I'm talking early noughties here and this is years I believe before SDS was marketed.
