Now there’s a thread title and a half!
What I mean is, are some things just meant to be together and others a match made in hell? Does this matter more than the intrinsic nature of the item? I’m beginning to think so, because trying stuff again in a different system and room is repeatedly confounding previous findings.
I bought a pair of Neat Petite 3 for the bedroom system, largely because they are soooo pretty and they were a bargain (yeah I’m a cheapskate).
I decided to get an idea of their sound, I’d first use them in the main system. I’ve had Petites before driven by a Naim CDI and a 62/Hi-Cap/250. Comparing to SBLs, they were glaring, hard and oh so hifi. Detail was really up there with the best, but it felt like being stood in blazing sun....I needed to run for cover.
Today with the Sonneteer Byron, Sonneteer Dryden and most importantly the Sonneteer Campion they are a delight. All the detail is still there. Better than the Ref 3as and Penaudios tbh. The difference from last time is that they are as sweet as a nut......or a pair of nuts (don’t even go there lol).
Now it’s no secret that I think the Sonneteer stuff is exceptional, especially the Campion. It’s worked beautifully with everything and made great and enjoyable music no matter what. I had expected the Neats hardness to shine through though, but apparently not. I’ve used Neats with other stuff and they still tend to be a bit “in yer face”, but not with Sonneteer. Not a trace.
I will be sticking with my Spicas in the main system, but it’s great to hear what changing partnering kit can do. I’m reaching the conclusion that most kit can sound decent and can engage the listener if you find it the right partner. Just like dating, there’s someone for everyone. Also that some stuff seems to be a great match with lost of other stuff whilst some bits can be heaven or hell. Again just like dating!
I’m at a point where I think partnering is more important than anything, so past experiences are only valid if you’re talking about using it in the same system. Even then, there’s the room to consider. Basically, opinions......even your own...... have little value beyond the time, room, system and individual experience. There can be real pleasure in finding merit in things you’ve discounted.
Since I got the Campion, it seems the list of “redeemed” kit just seems to grow. I’d encourage others to give a second listen to stuff you’ve previously had. You might be surprised!
