If I was doing a cheap good system today it would be an Arcam Alpha Plus CD or NAD C521 BEE with a Breeze Audio TPA3116 amp and a pair of Rega Elas. Chuck in some Linn K20 cable and some Soundcords for a sub £200 system that I could happily live with as a main system.
If I had £300 to spend I’d upgrade the CD player to a Rega Planet.

For me, Pioneer PD-S505 Precision CD player, TPA3116 amp and a pair of Aucharm five inch full range speaker drivers from China, mounted in a Wickes plain door cut in half to use as an open baffle.
I've been playing around with these Aucharm units and they sound bloody amazing, as impressive in their own way as the TPA3116 amp! They're about £100 a pair shipped to UK.
