I've notice for some years, on places like PFM & Wigwam etc. You sometimes come across 'unintelligent' threads that serves no useful purpose. It's nothing, but wasting good potential thread space! For example like this - pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads/is-it-just-me.229343/#post-3701804Why do some people do this? Are they dumb?, bored? or a combination of both? I don't get it. S.

What should I buy threads are almost always 'I want to buy this, please tell me i'm right' threads in disguise. The coffee forum i use has plenty of them too.

The only non-pointless subjects are:
1) Person A has component B with problem C. Person D has had exactly the same problem and is able to explain how to fix it.
2) Person A is doing DIY project B and wants to know where to obtain component C. Person D is able to give him exact information about where to find that component. Better still, has a spare component that he can let person A have for the price of postage.
Everything else is just waffle and hot air.

You could argue that all the waffle and hot air is what develops the camaraderie to get people to help each other out in the first place. The intangibles are often more important than the tangibles. It's why accountants almost always run businesses into the ground if they get control. No intangibles on a spreadsheet.

It's why accountants almost always run businesses into the ground if they get control. No intangibles on a spreadsheet. Which is also why videoconferenced meetings aren't as good as face-to-face meetings. All the real business is conducted in informal conversations between attendees rather than round the meeting table, where everyone has a 'line to take'. But purely in the context of hifi forum discussions about hifi, these mostly boil down to 'what should I buy?' to which the only sensible answer is 'it depends'.

Why would the thread highlighted be considering unintelligent?, they are asking a simple question of others on a forum about whether they hide purchases from their partners/spouses etc. which appears to be quite a common occurrence.
Also, if you don't like a thread, just ignore it and move on, why do you really care?

Well, quite. The line always used to be 'it's a waste of bandwidth', but that's not been a problem for a decade or more.

You see threads with 100 responses and someone will pop up and say 'This is boring/pointless'. Well the other 99 commenters didn't think so!
One of the reasons I stopped buying the mags was there was to much space devoted to computer audio and idiotic cable reviews. But it's a pisser to pay four quid for a mag and find there's only a few pages worth reading. That's a valid cause for complaint. But the same rules don't apply on line.

What's more, it's fairly obvious after a little time spent on forums who's got interesting/amusing things to say, and who hasn't. That makes for quick skim-reading, and saves time reading the thoughts of people who shouldn't be allowed out unaccompanied by a responsible adult (actually, the same goes for the mags as well)
