Sitting here smugly knowing I have my best ever sound, I am reflecting on how much time I’ve spent with sub-par systems. Now some systems have been complete pants, whilst others have had decent bits but haven’t stacked up.
I reckon I’ve been at it with proper kit since 1986. That’s 33 years, in that time I reckon I’ve had little more than 7 years with a good sound, The vast majority of those have been recent. About half those 33 years have been spent with a sound I was unhappy with,
This was largely because I don’t get on with front firing speakers and I didn’t hear any alternatives in my first 15-20 years. There was also a element of source first dogma which perhaps limited my thinking. Then thee was just plain bad judgement.
Am I unusual? Or have other folk spent a lot of time and money on systems that haven’t brought satisfaction?
Oh, and you all know what I like best. I may as well add the systems that really sounded shite.
1. Philips CD840, Myst Tma3 and ProAc Tablette. 2. Arcam Alpha CD, Naim 42.5/140, Naim IBL 3. Linn Axis, Cyrus One and Heybrook HB1.
Some of those systems contain decent kit, but their combinations were ear splitting. What were your worst systems?
BTW I spotted and corrected it, but my iPad changed ProAc to Prozac lol. I will never think of that brand in the same way again.

The only things I've owned and hated were a Sony direct drive turntable, and a Nytech amp. The first sounded dull dull dull, the second kept breaking down and having to be repaired. I briefly owned a Sugden amp that the critics drooled over but which left me cold. Fortunately the dealer who sold it to me knew me well and gave me a full refund.
Other than that, it's all been good. I still own the Exposure pre/power/CDP combo I bought in 1998, and the main system is getting on for six years old.

I was also smug until my amp went on the blink. Think I had about 5 weeks of awesome sound. Just enough to start getting used to it. I had still not got past the point of being amazed at everything I played on it but I still had it long enough so that going back down was hard.
In fact stuff going bad on me has forced me backwards many times. I posted the other day about my Systemdeck/Nagaoka/Denon system. Amp went tits up there anorl. Bought a brand new mark 2 version thinking with it being mark 2 it would be even better. But no.
Knowing F#ck all about hi-fi didn't help. I liked what the mark one Denon did but I had no idea why it did it and other amps didn't. That doesn't help when trying to select a new amp that will have the same qualities. To be honest even twenty odd years on and having read everything I can find about hi-fi, and having owned about a zillion amps I'm still none the wiser about exactly what it was about that Denon.
You know when you soend years trying to find the answer to a question, do all the research, try almost everything, and then you find out that the reality is that no-one really knows. Or if they do, they ain't telling.
As Alexi Sayle used to say, 'It's crap this really, isn't it?'
But I don't think it is unusual. I think if you know exactly what you want and you have the money to just go and buy it without pissing about trying to get it second hand, or trying to find cheaper equivalents, then its easy. Not many of us could do that though. We have to buy second hand to get the best at a price we can afford. That slows things down a lot. Like decades in some cases. Certainly in mine anyway.

I heard an Exposure cd player and amp into Elac speakers and that was very meh. At a dealers about 2005. It was not long after they came back from being Tag McLaren. My memories of the older stuff of theirs I have heard are hazy.

I have liked all the kit i have had for a period of time but moved on in the end. Still got my first serious cdp that i bought new in 1997 and it is still going strong even though i have modded the nuts off it. Still got all my old gear actually - i never sell stuff.
My current cdp, amps and speakers are goona be it for me. Well happy with them. Everything needs building properly but the parts are all there. Just the vinyl spinner to play with and possibly some Pi action.

Oh dear...... I wish I could have demmed you a few things. AE109's were a deliberately broken design made for a five star review in WTF at the time... There were measurements to prove my words too, back in the day.

My problem has always been letting go of some great gear in the pursuit of the holy grail of sound, with that realisation hitting me only when that gear was boxed up and sent off to it's new owner. By heck, if I was an olympic runner I would have chased many a courier's van down the road to get it back

Most of my early trials were down to selling before getting something else. Once I was able to buy and compare, I started doing bettre

NVA AP10P + Rega Planet MK1 + Royd Sapphire. Fucking hell, that system tortured my ears. Then one week later I swapped in some Neat Petite III. So much better and enjoyable. Could happily live with that system in a small room.
For a very short while I used Royd Minstrel with NVA AP10P and Naim CD5si. Bit flawed sounding but not bad.
Looks like I'm a bit of an AP10 fan!

Spendor D7s. They replaced an ancient pair of Mordaunt-Short MS20s that conked out and I couldn't be arsed repairing. Upstairs are a pair of the tiny Harbeths. I tried them with the Devialet, but they didn't gel.

One of the small speakers I've both tried and liked, are the Harbeth P3ESR. The midrange is lovely and have that nice liquid sound about them. Top end is refined and smooth for a small speaker. But I'll never spend £1,800 new buying them though.

Mine were just under a grand when I bought them, but I've never regretted the purchase. Under a grand is the max I'd spend on used/ex-demo P3ESR. But dealers will ask higher prices for their used examples. The greedy C#nts! S.
