Looks good. Expensive?
Says out of stock..
Should sound first class. I use an NVA TFS which is a similar idea- big linear power supply feeding quiet pc.

I suppose it's quite expensive for a case (300 euros) but when you take into account how many years of use, it's not expensive on a weekly basis. I believe the best components will be used and plenty of extra capacity should that ever be needed.

Not bad for a decent case, how about the LPS?

I only know the HDPlex has had good reports in the past.

The Roon server is coming along, Mark at Item would have liked to come and try a few things here but the travelling distance is too much. Anyway the latest is we are going to get one of these inside jcat.eu/product/net-card-femto/It's supposed to be very good, if only I knew what it did.

It relieves you of a load of money..... Ethernet is very very well sorted, it either works or it doesn't. £400 for a domestic ethernet adaptor is barmy. The receiving device either gets the data or not, and if not, it gets resent. It works for the entire internet without needing fancy cards (finance mobs excluded), and music is a very undemanding use, even 4K video is easy on a standard network. If you haven;t already got it and paid for it, I'd suggest you save yourself the money.

maybe a new thread needed, but wtf does Roon actually DO and do I need it for streaming? I know it's supposed to be the dog's danglies here, but I was 'streaming' from my laptop to a cheapo Chromecast Audio today and it 'sounded' fine and today, no dropouts (and the CA measures very poorly by today's standards too from its audio outputs)

roon core does what your laptop does (it manages the music and/or streaming services and fires the music down the wire) and roon endpoint does what the CA does, receives the music and puts it into your hifi.
the chap at ASR proved that with a competent DAC your current setup will sound exactly like any other streaming solution would - ie. like the DAC sounds.
Roon etc will provide a (potentially) nicer experience as they can catalogue music, have a nice screen to play with etc, but if like me, you use Spotify as your source, then its pretty good already and chances are it has a lot more development going into it than these other services. And if you use Spotify like this, all your laptop (or phone) is actually doing is controlling the chromecast, the CC does all the actual work (connecting to spotify, decoding the signal etc)
I'd love to hear a CC audio and a bunch of other streaming devices all through the same DAC. I reckon a blind test would be quite embarrassing

If you've been reading ASR as I think a few of us do now not so secretly, I believe the CCA is great as a very simple DAC with digital output, but 'barely sufficient' as a stand alone receiver with digital outputs. I have a simple program (sorry, app) on my old laptop that lets me play local music to the CCA but trying to access a remote PC (wirelessly connected) with my 'music' hard drive on it is fraught with dropouts and annoying feeze-ups. It's probably the age of the computer gear rather than the network as such, which has a fairly recent router. Bloody computers, they make everything more complex every few years all but forcing upgrades to make the software work better imo.
I know it's me, but have any of you added up how much you pay to third parties every month for phone-data use, Sky (most people seem to have some kind of Sky service except us), internet use if separate from Sky, music sreaming subscriptions and so on. I reckon it's hundreds a month for some people...

You don't need Roon for streaming but when using Tidal with the dCS app Roon is so much quicker, also you get loads of info on artists, related albums and other stuff. I have been told it also has some room correction built in which we will find out about when the unit is installed. This is quite an expensive build, but let's compare this with an analogue set-up and call this the cartridge, (the dac being the tt/arm) many spend £3k and above on Lyra's and Koetsu's.

What is ASR? CCA, CA, and CC - are they all abbreviations of Chromecast Audio?

Why are you using different abbreviations then? In your post you use CA and CC, very confusing.

I don’t normally get too riled up about hifi, but I know my way around a computer and audiophile computer bits boil my piss. Computers are engineered to work or not, so if a £2 bit works and is in every laptop going, it will work in a music streamer. Now the receiver needs to be properly engineered to screen out any noise but again, exchanging clean data is what computers do. All day everyday and way beyond the speed music requires

I understand what you're saying, but why do cables sound different? We have been using ethernet cable recommended by Bigman, seems well constructed, but will also try some audiophile cable to see if we can hear a difference.

Mark has been today to install the Roon Server, and for all those sceptics, it has made quite an improvement, removing a layer of glare which you would never have realised was there in the first place. The only problem, Mark found a fault with the HDPlex lps before he came, so brought with him a different supply for the server and a lps just for the Femto card previously mentioned. He took some sound measurements, which resulted in us moving our speakers further apart and with more to-in. Then using the Roon app, was able to even out the bass frequencies and also gave a slight boost to the top end. The Roon Server now connects directly to the Rossini dac, were previously it went via the router, and even Mark was amazed at how much difference the Audioquest ethernet cable made over and above the Duronic, his only explanation was connecting Femto to dac was the most important since he had never heard that kind of improvement before between cables. We asked if we could borrow the Audioquest for further appraisal and it's in the system now. We are now sit listening to the best sound ever from this system, and that includes using the Rossini as a cdp, a sound that you could listen to all day without any fatigue, unlike many hi-end we have heard. Should have mentioned, if his tech can get the HDPlex working he will send it to us, other wise a 2 month wait since they are out of stock.
