I thought we might collect a few ideas here and maybe put up a list of helpful tips for anyone thinking of starting to sell on EBay. For me, Ebay has been a great way to try used kit and then move it on without cost, If others can do likewise safely, then it has to be a good thing.

Agree with Rudy. You're relying on goodwill as the seller has virtually no protection on eBay. Okay 90% of people are reasonably honest but the way I see it you're just playing Russian roulette. The law of averages says eventually you'll get messed about or ripped off. I've bought there but I wouldn't sell there unless it was something inexpensive that wasn't likely to sell anywhere else. And it was a discounted listing. Their fees are ludicrous.

You should try the Japanese equivalent as an international buyer. One time I went for an Audio Technica Vacuum Disk Stabilizer. Pretty rare to see them here.
You have a fee for:
Registering to bid. Transferring funds into their payment system. There's a set amount you can deposit so you have to pay X times for depositing. I had to pay two lots. If you win. Cost of having the item sent from seller to the International Hub and then packed and posted for delivery overseas.
And then you have Custom's charge here. I won it for about £75, I think, but the cost overall came to £210. NEVER AGAIN, I said to myself.
No idea what happened there.

The law of averages says eventually you'll get messed about or ripped off. I've bought there but I wouldn't sell there unless it was something inexpensive that wasn't likely to sell anywhere else. And it was a discounted listing. Their fees are ludicrous. I’ve had a few ups and downs over the years but I reckon I must’ve sold many tens of thousands worth on there (and probably bought more. I’ve lost almost nothing to scammers because I’ve been careful, and thoughtful. Here are some pointers I gave just the other day: 1. I take lots of pics, especially of any flaws and I’m careful to avoid subjective descriptions. 2. I pack well and photograph every step, including serial numbers. 3. I insure fully and always use interparcel. 4. If anyone complains, I never entertain requests for partial refunds. This is the most common trick. A buyer gets something and either claims transit damage or a fault. I always ask for pics and make it clear I will refund in full. Many times the buyer miraculously goes quiet or resolves the issue. If it’s a genuine issue they send it back but Interparcel always meet any claim in full. 5. I only offer international post via eBay global shipping programme. Once your item reaches their uk distribution centre, it’s no longer your responsibility. If the item arrives overseas damaged, eBay refund the buyer in full and you don’t lose a penny. EBay are a lot better these days in supporting buyers. Their returns process a few years ago used to invite claims for partial refunds. Nowadays it’s much harder and the buyer is simply asked to return for refund. There are lots more factors to consider, but the above has helped me avoid losing money and allowed me to sell were you get the best prices. On another note, I only list when I’m given £1 listing offers and I make sure I never auto-relist.
