www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48269171He’s minted. He’s achieved more than most blokes and he’s walked away at a time when he still has a chance to enjoy a large chunk of life. He’s given dosh and shares to his workers and he’s also ceded control. Sounds like a great idea......any downsides? Well, he’s probably not going to have anyone as good as he was to take over. I used to know him back in tne day and he tended to attract “yes men”. I do worry slightly at how the company will change going forward. Hifi is a changing and perhaps dying market. There will be loads of shifts in buyer habits so maybe younger folk are better placed. Whatever the score, I think it’s great that he’s valued life over money and power, plus he has valued and rewarded his workers. When I knew him, he was a bit of a benevolent dictator, with the emphasis on benevolence. I wish him and Richer Sounds well. I hope it serves as an example to others. Thoughts?

His shop was my way into hi-fi, I couldn't even afford an amp at the proper hi-fi shop up the road from his, and I wanted speakers and a turntable too. Bought all three from Richer for £120 and that got me started. So he's cost me fuckin' fortune over the years the bastard!
But got a lot of time for him, he does business the way I do and it shows in the success he's had and the service you get in his shops is easily the best of any chain store in the UK and that is directly down to him.
I agree with you he'll be lucky to find someone who will carry it on. But maybe he has and that's why he's stepping back?

He's managed to maintain a successful business in an industry that has beaten many, many others, and he's done it without charging a fortune for stuff. I think he proves beyond doubt that if you don't screw your staff to maximise profit, they pay you back by doing their best and customers respond to that. Compare Richer sounds to Topshop and the like. And to share the benefits the way he has is a fantastic example to the greedy have-it-all-and-want-mores in charge of most businesses.

I've only ever purchased some QED speaker cable from Richer, although I did go in one of their shops a few weeks ago with a friend looking for speakers. The young man who served us demonstrated a couple of pairs and was extremely helpful, if not all that knowledgeable. I like the idea of passing on a percentage of the profits to staff so I wish him well in his retirement.

Great initiative, wish other companies would follow suit, but I doubt it because they fat cats want their massive bonuses.

Give it a year or so and the business will be broken up or bankrupt I reckon. Ever the optimist!

Give it a year or so and the business will be broken up or bankrupt I reckon. Ever the optimist! Unfortunately I probably agree with you. The primary reason that Richer Sounds has been so successful was down to Julian Richer, without him they are going to suffer.
