People who respond to questions like 'What new speakers should I go for?' by advising them to 'Find a good dealer.'
Fist of all let's deal with the redundancy. Why would you want to find an average dealer? Or a bad dealer?
Second why do they have to 'find' one? As though they were a rare form of orchid or something. They're all over the internet due to this thing called 'advertising'.
Third the person asking the question probably did not come down with the rain we had earlier in the day. Unless they are under 12 years old then they've almost certainly figured out that they could go to a dealer and listen to some speakers even if they never have before.
It's possibly the least helpful advice currently available on the internet.

Although thinking about it the o/p is probably just as much to blame. He should really entitle his thread 'Let's all disagree wildly about 'speakers for fifteen pages.'

Might as well ask 'What speakers are you using?' because that's what most people will respond with.

Indeed. Added to that if the o/p says he is looking at small standmounts under £1K it is pretty much guaranteed that at least several people will recommend speakers which are large floorstanders costing north of five grand.
Also works with amplifiers. If you specify that you are looking for a solid state amp at least 25% of respondents will recommend a valve amp. Curiously this rarely happens the other way around.

Yep. The 'If you want to get to Dublin...' approach to upgrading advice.
The purest form of useless advice is to recommend what you are using and not even give any valid reason for it. e.g 'I have the TAT 9000 and they're great!'
Forgivable from an enthusiastic youngster I suppose but then you learn from later threads that the poster is a sixty-five year old chartered accountant.

The old are just as entitled to talk bollocks as youngsters!

And they do! Some people seem to have led very sheltered lives, the lucky bastards. But it is hard to compare old with young as there are so few youngsters (to me that's under 35) on the forums.

Another annoyance - People asking for CD player recommendations getting told to do streaming instead. Thus forcing the poor old o/p to go into detail about why he doesn't want to.
Do they think he has never heard of streaming? He's asking for a CD player because he wants a fucking CD player!

I’d rather insert a nettle up my urethra than go the streaming route,

'Since moving to streaming I'm not playing records anymore so I'm selling my vinyl collection. Here's a list of what is available.'
First reply: 'Ooooh are you sure you want to do this? You'll probably regret it. Vinyl is still the best format, although digital is getting closer.'
1) Yes he's sure. That's why he's just spend several hours of his life typing out 250 album titles with condition and price. 2) Vinyl has never been the best format 3) You're an idiot.

And....The bloke who's using a crap item of equipment in his system, that's holding everything back, but digs heels in and gets the hump when told to bin it, even though he's asked for advice.

Advice that reads like it was cribbed from a 1989 issue of 'Hi Fi Choice'. Don't forget to use the following stock phrases:
'Try and get a listen to...' - as in 'Try and get a listen to the Obscure Audio 2100.' Even though only 200 were made, it was discontinued 5 years ago and the company has since gone bust.
'Off the pace...' - as in 'The TAT 3000 was a good speaker in its day, but compared to the latest offerings from *insert some heavily advertised brands here* it is now off the pace.'
'In its day' - as above
'Singing' - as in 'with the little TAT X21 in the loop your system will really sing.'
'Don't forget' - as in 'Don't forget to allocate a reasonable portion of your budget to stands and cabling.' If you really want the full patronising effect then add 'As these can really make a difference.'

Yep that's a classic. Behaving like you designed and built the equipment you are using (in which case you might have just cause to get the hump when other people say it is tat). What's that all about? By all means defend it but taking it personally is a bit crazy/avoid eye contact.

Naim owners asking what to do about a harshness to the sound will only ever get two types of reply.
People who do not use Naim will advise to get rid of the Naim
People who do use Naim will advise experimenting with speaker toe-in.

NOTHING gets on my wick more than lack of communication from people.
I urgently need the main electric circuit trip replacing to our house because it keeps on randomly tripping. I rang three local electricians and only one actually bothered to turn up at all - six hours after he was supposed to arrive. Looks at it, rubs his chin and says "Easy job, 30 minutes tops, I will text a quote over within 24 hours". No quote, haven't heard from him since, which was 8 weeks ago. I posted a request on checkatrade.com for an electrician and they have stayed away in droves, with not one single reply.
I realise that there is a shortage of QUALIFIED electricians since they have to jump through many hoops to become one, but making contact to say "I'm sorry, cannot find the time to address your problem" doesn't need a 17th Edition certificate in politeness and courtesy to respond does it?

It's a sellers market as far as trades go. They can do what they like. I had terrible problems getting someone to re-pave my front step and forecourt. Same as you found, can't even be arsed to come out and quote. Finally my neighbour got someone he knows to do both his and mine - as a favour to him! I mean we still had to pay but it wasn't a job they would usually even bother with.
Years ago if you needed stuff doing on your house there would be a line of tradesmen a mile long begging for the work.
