I have three regular hifi mates and a couple of more occasional ones. I get to listen to their purchases and two of them are habitual box swappers. I help them out with buying things when they are strapped and they help me with pickups and sometimes receiving and storing stuff. One is technical so he can fix the odd bit.
I’ve had my hifi mates between 15 and 25 years.
How are the rest of you fixed for mates?

Sorry to defy this topic. I don't have HiFi mates. It's more like HiFi acquaintances in my world.

I had one acquaintance, but we seem to have lost touch these days. I have recently helped a friend purchase a new hifi, amp and speakers, and he is busy ripping his cd's onto a hard drive.

I guess you get the sort of hifi friendship from your brother too. I did help a mate get into hifi many years ago, but we lost touch.

That's true Westie, he always likes me to give a second opinion on anything he dems, no bad thing in my book. Also, the salesman is not so 'overpowering' when 2 of you are there. Of course I like to go with him to have a listen. He did take a chance on his Accustic Arts amps and the Townshend cables, which I believe are the first items he has ever purchased without some sort of dem, either home or at a shop.

Does my Dad and his friend count?
I have made friends with my fellow mods on the TAS forum.
Other than that, not really, no.

I bumped into a bloke reading a Hi-Fi mag in the newsagent. Does he count?

My 2 mates are both into hi-fi, one of which is also a reviewer.

Made a few long term friends from HiFi.
Its been a rewarding hobby in more ways than one. Unfortunately, I'm at the point where further progress is out of my budget and out of my desire.
Thankfully, they are still striving to gain more from their skills so I get to regularly hear new or modded phonostages and tonearms. One is now venturing into the cable area I currently occupy so I must have turned him from a sceptic to believer. He was still stunned when I told him I thought the Nylon braid I use on my cables make a difference lol
Whats interesting is that we all seem to move in the same direction with our systems, even if we don't have the same gear or even type of gear.
Lots to talk about but it tendy to be more phonecalls than forum posts which is a shame but not surprising.

I’m really thankful for my hifi mates. They are the only mates I have and it’s our common interest that’s brought us together. Sounds like you’ve had some really great experiences too, Oliver. Lost more to come too, I expect.

Got a few mates locally who are musicians and who I've known for decades who all run decent systems (mostly made up of my cast offs). They appreciate the better sound quality of a separates system which is why they have them but they are not into hi-fi as a hobby and they rarely if ever upgrade anything.
One mate who is an EE and used to be a hi-fi dealer in South Africa, he is into hi-fi but he lives way out in Cheshire so I don't see him much. And one mate who is into home cinema. He's got Oppo - Onkyo - B&W set up. Sounds pretty good on 2 channel but he only uses it for films.

Lost more to come too, I expect. Yes, it's been great. I've had a lot of exposure to some really interesting stuff. Whenever Alan has had something interesting in for repair, I've been over to his for a listen and vice versa. Ive loaned loads of kit of a great fella called Nigel. He's got some great stuff and drops it off for me to audition too. Its been really good and in a week or two I'll be listening to Phonomacs phonostage he's built. Its great!
